I think it may have to be FAT32 format.

Edit: here you go.

If you are running Windows, format the drive by going to the command prompt (Vista, right click on command prompt in start menu and click "run as administrator")and type in "format h: /FS:FAT32" (without the quotes). You may need to substitute your drive letter. (note this might not work on XP for a large hard drive - you may have to use a third-party formatting utility like SwissKnife; however, it does work under Vista - just be sure to use the format command from the DOS prompt, not from Windows Explorer) If you receive an error message stating that the drive does not exist or cannot be found, it is likely that Vista formatting the drive to "NTFS". Use the disk manager window to cancel this format, and when the drive file system is "RAW", use the command line again.

do this instead, for the format h: /FS:FAT32 part, change h to whatever the drive letter is for you external drive.

Windows will not format a fat32 partition larger than 8gb.
when I formatted my external for use with my ps3 I used Swissknife and it works perfect

Start button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt

Or...

Start button > Run... > type "cmd" in the open field.

It just wants a name for the HDD.

Just hit enter.

I tried doing the Command Prompt and it didnt work... just made the File System "RAW" because it was too big, since I have a 1tb harddrive

can you explain how to work swissknife? I have downloaded it just dont know what to do. What size is your external?
