Got 3 V8 motors in storage - one in my old van, a 307 and a '69 350 - that I'm keeping cuz it's all code-dated full. Then there is also a '91 Mustang 5.0 hooked with T-5 trans to bring from BC, my friend's holding for me there.

Yup, I got my hands full with them as I have 3 other engines but aren't V8! Two are Honda and one Ford V6. :D

Next year planning on Maximum Motorsports tubular k-member, coilovers & control arms, LT headers, Aluminum driveshaft & upgraded clutch... not sure what rear suspension setup i will decide on yet... :) oh yah... and boost of some kind ;)

Are you asian and wear earplugs when you drive? If so i didn't realize that was a real cobra.
Either way, nice lineup of cars you have.

haha yup :) orange pad finished nearly perfect so i did not bother to go any further with 106 or 85rd... as much as i hate to admit it i did manage to put in all sorts of nasty holograms playing around with a borrowed makita 9227c + black pad and RMG :( pretty sure it was because i was using the stock makita backing plate :/ and because of the RMG i could not see the holograms untill a few weeks later :(
The car is now sealed and ready for a cover all winter... first thing in the spring it will get 106+ white and 85rd +black followed by EZ creme glaze/JS109/petes 53! I used that glaze/seal/wax combo on my dads Torch Red 07 vert and DEAR GOD is it ever dripping wet! have you tried that combo yet? petes 53 goes on and comes off smoother than s100 and has more depth than anything else ive ever used... just crazy ;) and the JS109 puts collinite to shame as far as slickness is concerned :)

I love v8s dont get me wrong
but i got into the whole 4cylinder game, v8 is just a bigger number, more pistons, and more gas, i got myself a 4popper and it beats most of the v8's out there and gets more than half the gas of a V8....

I would love me a 5.0 stang again tho....

Not a real cobra, it's a factory five kit. a very very expensive ffr kit though, heh.

Sometimes I wear earplugs (when I know i"ll be getting on it), but for casual cruising I usually don't bother - inside the cockpit it's loud, but tolerable. It's only painful for others outside the cockpit :D

here's my theory with rotaries FWIW - unless you can take a wool pad (excluding PFW) and finish down near-perfect on it with a compound, you don't have the skill to use it (that's the rule I hold myself to - I'm good with a rotary, but not perfect, so I don't use it so I don't have to chase hollograms around).

I usually do white+106, or white+SIP; black+106; or orange/PFW+SIP;white/106

Favorite wax/sealant is 845, although I just bought some blackfire wet diamond sealant. Supposed to be REALLY good, so I'll try that with a layer of 845 and see how it looks.

Nothing really yet. I bought it all original. In the last month I did an underdrive pully kit, headers with full 3" straight pipe exhaust, aluminum drive shaft, intake and rims/tires. I've got a quote from the mustang shop for trickflo heads/intake man/throttle body spacer and purty valve covers haha. My problem is I haven't decided if I'm going to s/c or turbo yet :( Maybe just N/A with juice, frick who knows. I just enjoy driving it right now. Love it more then any of my other cars that's for sure. Only thing I know for sure is I'm frame off restoring it over the winter/spring. Just lookin into good bead blasting places now :)

V8s are great and all, but I just love jamming around in a small car. Fox Mustangs are decently light, I would drive one of those but I'd prefer something in the 2500lb and under range.

Jim was my inspiration. :D Being 4wd helped him immensely on the street, but he said he would start with a 2wd if he did it all over again. His blue Silverado is down in Mexico, now. His latest project is a twin turbo G8 that he is starting to make news with. I liked his early 80's Fairmont best that he ripped the 4 cylinder out of and dropped in a turbo charged truck 5.3 v8.

ef, my PTG reads between 200-300 microns around the car, from what i understand the mystics were all hand sprayed. Should be plenty of clear left to play with.... considering that from what i've seen sip/orange removes only 1-3 microns ;)

and shlade, i disagree about WMS. I ordered all my rearend parts from them while i was living in kelowna, sure they were cheaper but shannon made a pretty big mistake! i had a friend that was coming out to visit pickup all the parts and shannon forgot to load posi in her car :( ended up putting me back a few weeks due to available time in the shop :(. on the other hand he DID fedex it to me free of charge :D.

The mustang shop however has never made an error, matt always takes time to help me out as does his father. they have also data logged my car twice free of charge and changed my tune twice also free of charge. I guess i can honestly say that i dont mind spending a little more green to get trouble free service time and time again!

You have a PTG......... Don't suppose it's one of those that works on fiberglass?

Are you certain you're using it properly - 200-300 microns is a lot, most factory cars are around 110-130ish.

maybe he's thinking mils is microns lol

3-4mil is 80-100µ

200-300µ would be... 14-15 mil? *actually that might be acurate if it's hand sprayed....*

my PTG reads 3.5mil across my whole foxbody, all OEM paint.

I don't have a fiberglass or plastic PTG, theyre like 6Gs or something stupid

I wish I had a fiberglass ptg - my cobra has only been wetsanded and polished once, hand sprayed, and A LOT of clear layed down for future corrections, so I'd be really curious to see how many microns it has.

Since you have a PTG (and I don't, hehehe), have you ever been able to measure where clearcoat failure due to UV happens? I've heard talk around 80-85micron.

80 and under in my experience.

I run around with it and measure everything haha. Support beams, tables, cars in the parking lot lol... you should get one!

What abrasion level do you wetsand with? I use 3000 lol... but I hear a lot of people do 1500>2000 then 3000... I've been to scared to try 1500!

Always good to know how many microns a table is

On a fresh custom paint job where I know the painter and I know there's a lot of clear to play with, I'll generally do 1500, then 2000, then PFW+SIP, then white/106....but again, that's a fresh paint job where I'm removing the orange peel, not repairing a scratch.

On a factory paint job, I almost never wetsand (I do have 1500 to 3000 meg's unigrit onhand though) - if 3-5passes with a PFW & SIP hasn't removed it, it's atleast leveled it out enough that the RID/scratch/etc... isn't as noticeable anymore, and I never shoot for 100% - I mean, what's the point. No matter how perfect your washing/drying method is, that paint will not remain flawless in 1-2yrs from now. It's going to need a polish again (even something very mild like white/106), so why hammer on it now to achieve 100% correction now and leave yourself with less room to work with later on.

Oh I know. But I have a contract with a dealership and every black car in dire need of help he says "wetsand!" and I just shake my head. I know it's unlikely it'll be done again cause most of the population doesn't give two craps about their A>B car but I just find it uneccessary when as you said, a good couple passes with SIP will do perfect for anyone looking to buy a car and then some.

Maybe I'll try 1500 on my mustang and see how it pans out. I don't mind having to repaint it haha. Hopefully that stuffs cheaper then my 90$/8 box of 3000 :(

heh sorry :P was thinking mils :P i dunno how to make that funny um symbol!!

no my PDG does not do fiberglass :P Carlos of detailingbliss has one in calgary, contact him maybe? :)

if you ever want to measure somthing metal feel free to PM me

my mothers 03 TL has between 100-130 and my fathers 07 mustang vert is a strong 120 all around (exept on the a pilars). my fathers 03 c230 however has between 80-90 on all the OE painted panels, the 09 c-class he had as a loaner also measured between 80-100 so im thinking mercedes are thin in general :P

i agree with not chasing rids forever... save the clear and play another day :)

as i said, SIP/orange in my experence removes between 1-3, Powergloss/orange is some nasty shit... removed 10+ last time i used it!!

ever tried PFW on your 3401 ef? i dont ever really see any chatter about using wool on the flex at all for some reason

How many pieces do you get per box? I've always just been buying from autogeek ($30 for 25 pieces of 3000)

http://www.autogeek.net/3000-grit-sandpaper.html

You can use 1500 - same idea - light pressure, sanding block, continually mist the panel down and inspect progress. If I were doing it though and only wanted to 1step the sanding process (i.e., non show car), I'd use 2000 instead - I can usually remove all tracers with 4-5 passes (passes, not application) of SIP with 2000; 1500 grit I usually have to increase the grit, re-wetsand, then compound it out, never had much luck removing them right off the bat, even though SIP says it can do 1500.

In terms of the dealership, I'd just say screw it and hit it with a PFW+SIP, or orange+SIP, then, if no micromarring left behind, use a very glossy sealent like Blackfire wet diamond with polycharger. Only a really trained eye would be able to tell that there's still more 'pop' that can be pulled from the paint.

And if they really insist on having the entire car wetsanded down to make it perfect and remove all orange peel, then I'd start charging out the butt for it - no way I'd wetsand an entire car, compound, polish, jewel, seal&wax it for anywhere less than 1500.

Since PFWs are 'limited' use (i.e., after multiple cleanings they tend not to perform as well, and if you wash them they tend to cut more like regular wool) I tend to only use them after wetsanding with 2000-2500 to make the surface LSP ready.

3401+PFW+SIP+minimal pressure+4-5 passes, in my experience, can easily remove 2000gritt scratches and leave the surface LSP ready.

In terms of powergloss, it really is a heavy cut. And if you ever use it on a panel with a defect in the clear, holy crap, watch out.

This is a test panel of mine, off a GM bumper. This was done with, believe it or not, 2 passes (not application, passes) of powergloss, no pressure. Not only did it burn through the clear compeltely, but it went right through the paint and primer as well. The panel had some type of paint defect in it, but damn, that sucker CHEWED right threw everything in its path, haha.

Most aggressive I go is SIP for polishes. SIP + PFW can handle almost anything.
