First is my buddy Bretts Toyota Supra. It's good for a 10 second pass, but every attempt made something goes wrong. He hit 11.20's in Edmonton with this setup, however he's gone to a huge new fuel system with slosh tank and dash-6 lines, it WILL see 10's.

And a friend of mine just picked up his new 1988 Widebody M3 BMW. I've been itching to do a shoot with this car for over a year now, I only got about 30 mins to work with it tonight, but I'm definatly happy with the results.

I used a combination of 18-55 with a 28 f2.8 and a 200 year old Vivitar flash, directed 45 degrees towards the ceiling. These photos turned out quite amazing, I've never produced flash photography this good before, I am very happy at the turnout.

I guess it helped that the parkade roof was roughly only 7-8' tall, helped with bouncing light!

oh and nice cars  Haha when I looked at the lcd i was thinking "blah these don't look good". Then I got home and made a b-line for my computer and uploaded them. Was pleasantly suprised at the outcome. First time trying this I never thought I'd see results like this!!

The problem with bouncing a flash of a ceiling is controlling your falloff. For portraits it works reasonably well, but for automotive work it's kinda like "oh look, he just bounced the flash off the ceiling..."

Next time, try using a reflector or something to fill in the shadows at the edge of the falloff. Not bad for a first try though.

It was more or less me driving around in the white bmw, and randomly going into a parkade, and conveniently having my camera in the backseat.....

And where is more of your 'auto' work. I checked the stuff on the website but all i saw was a few 'meh' Hdr pics of cars. got anything good..?

That's a little harsh don't you think? The guy was giving you a few tips that could help your shots and you attack him?

Maybe you should learn to take some constructive criticism a little..

Maybe you should learn to take some constructive criticism a little.. I can take criticism, I can take it better than most people, but when you word things like he did, it rubs me the wrong way. If you act like a professional photographer, you should have work that backs up that claim. When you tell people how to take a photo, you shouldn't tell them how to do it in a condescending tone, that rubs you off like you are better.

That's what I get out of it anyways. feel free to look around this forum at soem things people say about my work, if it's valid, worded properly and meant to be a positive remark about how to do things I take it as so.

There is good criticism, and there is criticism like what he posted.
dropping lines like "good try for a first time" is pretty dick move, especially when this isn't Dave's first time shooting cars.
It's quite disrespectul to just throw lines like that out.
I'd demand to see work from someone who dropped that on me too.

What, exactly, was condescending about my "tone"? Would it have helped if I'd peppered my post with smiley faces? It was an honest criticism. It WAS a good try for a first time. I explained why bouncing a flash of a ceiling might not be the best method for shooting something as large as a car.

I'm not an automotive photographer, nor have I ever claimed to be. I merely pointed out a technicality that's true for ANY form of photography. The car shots I have on my website are just my own, personal meandering works. Nothing more, nothing less. Kind of low to blatantly attack that, don't you think?

Considering his first comment on any photos I posted here was "Not feeling ANY of those edited shots man. Sorry.", I'd say that my comment to this was infinitely more professional. Also, please keep in mind that the thread he posted this in was for an event he was not a part of, nor did I request any criticism. To give off a first impression like that without any constructive aspect to it whatsoever is one of the most ridiculous moves an aspiring photographer can make. Seems rather...pretentious.

Why this kid feels so threatened as to attack me like this is quite beyond me. In this thread, I merely tried to re-approach him in a respectful, professional manner by giving him some advice. I've seen his work and a number of his images are really quite striking. Like everyone though (and I obviously include myself in this statement), there's always room for improvement. It's what we do as photographers. We network, we review, we work together, we give advice. If I can help with that, I'm happy to do so. If the recipient of my advice chooses to have a hissy fit, so be it.

Word to the wise: if you can't take constructive criticism, how the hell are you going to learn to improve yourself? Way to burn your bridges, buddy.

I did not burn a bridge, because I never established one with you. Nor did I have the intentions on doing so.

The internet doesn't portray the true emotion of a persons comment or how they are trying to iterate it, so things can be and will be taken in the wrong context. Thus my reason, as well as Bukka's for coming to the conclusion that things were said in a way as to make it sound inferior.

I take criticism every day. I posted photos I just took of my nieces, and got told they were "crap" by over a dozen individuals, those of which I look up to, however they said it in a way where I could understand why they looked crappy, and they gave solid points on how to improve, and told me things to do for next time as well as complimenting the effort, and I took them all in stride and thanked them.

Being said, if you didn't mean what you said in the way I took it, my apologies for backlashing on mine, as well as bukka's behalf. It afterall, is the internet!

The "first time" thing I took as first time shooting in a low parking garage with one flash, but maybe I missed it.. The way he responded was what caught me as pretty rude - especially from someone who just said "if you act like a professional photographer.."

That isn't really a way to act like a professional photographer - calling down someone elses work far worse than they called yours down..

I'm not trying to stir the pot or cause shit, I just think the photography portion of this forum needs to relax a whole lot and stop being so cut throat with each other..

TDFTW : I've always like quite a bit of your work, a few things could use improvement like the under hood shots in this set - but it's hard to light something like that evenly with one flash.. And before you ask, I don't have very many shots proving myself - the automotive stuff I do is mostly with the hood closed.

ex1 - I'm not going to ask for shots to "proof yourself" lol.

And yeah lighting under the hood really is hard with one flash, that HAS to be mounted to your camera :\ I'm hoping this winter I can upgrade gear and go the strobist route for all myphotoshoots

What kinda power does it make? what does it weigh?

TDFTW
10-09-2009, 02:34 PM
I can't remember what it weighed. I think it was around 1600kg but don't quote me on that. And when Turbo Tom had it at the dyno on highboost it was doing 420wheel

blackpeople
10-09-2009, 02:36 PM
So high boost it made 420 wheel? awesome:D

TDFTW
10-09-2009, 02:41 PM
Yep. You'd have to talk to Pete for specifics though, as I don't know what he's running right now for boost or power, and that 420 wheel was done on race fuel iirc.

"Pwned"? Really? :thumbsdow
There wasn't a modicum of professionalism in his response. Anywhere.

Does "pwnage" equate to greatness for you people? If that's the case, then enjoy your collective mediocrity.
