wondering if anyone has experience with Safes, and can recommend what the best brand is, etc...
don't want to spend more than 500 bucks but the less it costs me the better.

as far as size and price goes this one looks good to me (below), but i dont know how secure it really is.
this would store important documents as well as some other valuable items.

One thing to keep in mind, fireproof means the safe will not melt, there is the real possibility the contents will combust depending on the quality and purpose of the safe and the material of the contents.

Anything of real value ought to be in a bank deposit room, but I assume you have covered this angle. Your home insurance might have a deal on a safe or bank storage plan.

That WalMart safe looks anything but, I was in line at WalMart and a couple of shifty characters from Breaking Bad were buying the exact safe. They had it in a shopping cart, so think about the ease in which anyone can walk away with it. Fire and theft of the safe are considerations.

Also, safe and lock companies often have used safes for sale, give a few a call. I know in Victoria the safe company on Fort Street sold used safes, and they were in all sizes and features. Seems logical Calgary would have the same market potential.

If you are storing documents, you are probably better off with a safety deposit box at your bank.

They don't cost that much to rent.

thanks for the advice.
i never thought to talk my insurance company about affiliations they may have. I'll look into that.
