This is a brief overview of my build that's been ongoing for about the last 2 years give or take. I stopped counting the amount of cash that's gone into this thing, but I still feel it's all worth it!

We'll start at the beginning.

http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/8858/dsc00687xq2.jpg

This is one of the very first pics I have of her. Fresh from Vancouver (to Kelowna at the time)

What the interior looked like:

http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/8247/dsc00697ug2.jpg

If your eyes are bleeding, don't worry, it's a natural reaction to that interior.

Engine shot, nothing special.

http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/9058/dsc00717mc1.jpg

After a few modifications here and there. At the time was running about 8.5psi on the stock (itty bitty) t25 turbo.

http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/8873/dsc01259ew2.jpg

Started to pull apart the shitty red interior piece by piece replacing it with what I could find locally

http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/23/seats035vx6.jpg

The turbo finally gave up the ghost on a trip to edmonton (leaving me with a $700 tow bill, nice)

http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/51/img1204rz9.jpg

I got the car home and pulled the engine apart, luckily there was no damage to the lower end at all. I had the heads ported and had a 5angle valve job done. Put on a bunch of other misc goodies and packed it away for the winter again (back to school)

http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/3798/img1422od3.jpg

After winter was over I finally brought the car to Calgary after I found a place with a garage for it, and did a few suspension mods to start with (polyurethane bushings everywhere)

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/3083/img0740yg1.jpg

A little paint to make it look nice and clean.

I then proceeded to drop the rear subframe to replace the bushings back there, turns out that the control arm bolts like to rust into one solid lump, so that took some doing to get out and proper

http://img368.imageshack.us/img368/1469/img0993fd8.jpg

I then found some of my most favoritest thing in the entire world, Cancer.

Made a 3" downpipe out of some 304 food-grade stainless

http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/3832/img1413w.jpg

http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/3339/img1497k.jpg

Got the rear end stuff cleaned and painted

Screamer pipe

http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/8703/img1628.jpg

http://img398.imageshack.us/img398/600/img1610.jpg

Decided that my stock, busted ass suspension needed some work dearly, so I went ahead and got some custom stuff done up to work with s13 GR+ Stance coilovers. The amount of z31's with a proper ride height is Severely lacking, stance = moar low.

Custom rear upper mount

http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/7972/img1684bbc.jpg

Serialnine weld-on collar adapters installed onto cut down stock strut tubes, powder coated beautifully.

Fronts installed with z32 30mm iron calipers

http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/2078/img1578m.jpg

Fuel pressure regulator on custom mount.

Halfass engine bay shots, sans plenum and piping:

A very dusty, Very battleshipped Z31.

http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/3341/img1950k.jpg

New wheels were planned for before the layoff, now she sits on stock shoes looking silly.

I've given the car a very very base tune, taken it about the block a few times, it runs, drives on its own power which it hasn't for 3 years, and sounds mean as hell. The plans now are to take it back to Kelowna where it'll sit for another 3 long years whilst I get my degree in Mechanical engineering.

Oh, and the entire interior is all black now, including carpet, I just don't have any pics of it!

I'll do my best for a mods list, but I'm sure I'll miss a ton of stuff.

GT3571 journal bearing turbo
3" thick aluminum radiator
3" thick intercooler
16 row oil cooler
42mm turbonetics racegate
custom intake manifold

550cc SARD injectors (same as fc turboII)
A1000-6 FPR
AL fuel fittings all around
Billet -6 fuel rails
Innovate LC-1 wideband w/ G3 afr gauge.

Brakes/footwork

s13 Stance GR+ coilovers
Serialnine weld-on collars
custom rear upper and lower coilover mounts
MSA anti-sway bar endlinks
Prothane total kit polyurethane bushings
1990 z32 30mm 4 pot iron brake calipers
z32 front rotors
s13 to z32 brake lines from PDM
Ebay s13 short shifter

Drivetrain:

Centerforce dual friction clutch
Stock R200 LSD (clutch type) rebuild with 6 clutches (2 stock)
custom solid rear differential mount
custom solid rear crossmember mounts
Polyurethane transmission mount
Polyurethane engine mounts.
Stock FS5R30A transmission (same guts as z32tt transmissions)

Interior:

Autometer gauges all around (boost, oil temp, water temp, oil pressure)
Pleather racing seats (can't remember brand) custom mounts
2 kicker compvr 10" subs
Oldschool kenwood deck
oldschool RF amp.
Red interior converted to black, every, single, last, piece.
lo-tek 3 gauge pod

That's as best as I can do for now, thanks for looking, apologies for the massive pic dump.

wow amazing work. i think you can get some new moulded carpet from ebay for a few bills, that would get you the black carpet. any work done to the bottom end of the motor?

Speedy
10-15-2009, 06:44 AM
Very nice, did you do all the fabrication yourself?

DeleriousZ
10-15-2009, 12:52 PM
All of the TIG welding was done by others as I don't have a tig machine. I designed everything via SolidWorks beforehand. The front strut tubes were done by a friend in the states as well.

The bottom end is stock for the time being. The stock bottom end has been known to reliably hold 450whp on a good tune.

I'll try and get some decent interior shots sometime before the car goes home. Thanks for the comments.

Minor update, the car is now sitting in Kelowna. I got it running and driving on a basic tune and slightly skinnier tires up front (coilovers were rubbing.)

Car pulls like a mofo with a horrible tune at 6psi, can't wait till i get some dyno/tune time to bump up the boost pressure.

Main thing to get now is a set of shoes and a fender roller.

Since I'm moving back to Calgary in a few days, I figure I should update this build thread.

Due to lots of slacking and even more lack of motivation i haven't done a whole lot more since the last update years and years ago.

Should have kept that burgundy interior just for laughs.

Thanks,

I'm thinking about changing the tip up a bit. I liked it at first but now I don't feel like it fills out the bumper well enough. Probably going dual 3" blast tubes next.

Thanks guys. Can't wait to get this out to Calgary and get back to work on it. Being around some friends that are professional drifters and just a bunch of car guys in general has really re-ignited my interest in this car.

Plans for the end of the year is to figure out a way to create a large amount of adjustable rear camber without having to switch to an s13 subframe. Also add in some outer-arm toe adjustment to re-center the rear wheel in the wheel arch (damn you semi-trailing arm suspension)

Then get it tuned and road-worthy. Also hopefully figure out a way to get the front an inch lower (coils maxed out :( )

Couple random fixes here and there so far, getting it ready for OOPI.

Got rid of bad gangsta lean from the seats not having the proper spacers, replaced a taillight bulb.

Pulled gauge cluster to figure out why right turn signal light on the dash wasn't working, turns out it was a broken trace on the flexible PCB on the back of the cluster... oh 80's technology.

Coilovers, or Short ass springs with shorter dampers (foxbody dampers fit I think)

If you don't mind running higher offset wheels, you can do an s13 or z32 multi-link rear subframe swap so you don't gain mad negative camber and crazy toe when you drop the car.

Car's been sitting around for a while while I sorted out my daily driver. Got that all worked out, just in time to find another '88 for sale out in Duchess for a grand that had a bad clutch. So I went out and picked it up and trailered it home with help from a buddy.

http://imageshack.us/a/img254/9016/20121211220659297.jpg

Quickly started pulling it apart to repair/replace some things.

http://imageshack.us/a/img713/3261/20121213215243358.jpg

Car seems to be in decent shape aside from the standard rust issues. Pretty unavoidable with older nissan's, so I'm pretty used to it by now.

Anyway, I thought it was a great score, the car features lots of things that z31 guys get wet over, including:

Much desired factory R200 CLSD complete with finned diff cover
fs5r30a transmission, has been known to hold over 600whp at the dragstrip reliably.
full black interior, usually the red cars have the horrid red interior (http://imageshack.us/a/img201/8247/dsc00697ug2.jpg), but this one doesn't
Turbo front spindles and hubs, great for z32 brake conversions and everything related.

Plans for the near future for this one:

Timing belt job and fix all the little things, and the big things that are necessary to get it road worthy.
Replace completely rusted out front fenders.
Make it a fun, reliable daily that has all the creature comforts for winter including headlight washers, toasty heater and heated mirrors (in a car from the 80's, not bad!)
Minor suspension mods like polyurethane bushings to stiffen up the 25 year old bits.
Exhaust and intake, most likely just a 3" downpipe to e-cutout and mostly stock catback exhaust (sans cat)
Maxima e-fans and maxima 90amp alternator
Make use of the MBC that seems to have come with the car.
Find another TurboXS RFL bov to sit on the elbow I have that will fit on the car. Currently has an elbow with an unknown bung welded into it and capped off sketchily.
Install kick ass hks boost gauge in place of stock gauge location.
Short shifter, probably cheap ebay one. Other one has worked great in the other car
some kind of deck, has the OG stereo in there right now, crazy! too bad it's busted
Winter wheels/tires. most likely some cheap Sunny WOT-18's and Mustang saleen sc wheels in a 17x10 +20 with spacers.

That's pretty much where my current Z was before it went down and I was enjoying it quite a bit.

Future plans include:

hx40/35 hybrid in stock location, supporting mods.
toying with setting up an air to water intercooler, trying to keep things as simple as possible under the hood.
Get a/c working if it doesn't currently.
Stance coilovers (only company that makes coilovers to fit the car)
Nice summer wheels maybe. Perhaps pull the Varrstoens off the current Z when I find another pair of equips.

Been toying with the idea of a swap into the current z, and pulling that engine for this car. Will have to see how the rest of the winter plays out.

Got the Purple Z to the new place, still doesn't have garage space tho, Duchess (the red one) is taking up the space for now!

Been busy trying to get Duchess ready for DD duty, done the following stuff:

Steering rack and inner/outer tie rod replacement.
Removed AIV system
Removed Charcoal Canister system
Timing belt and all related parts, basically entire front of the engine replaced.

Going to toss a pod filter on her to lose some hp's, and got some new fenders on the way.

Leaky cam seal FTL

Was having a bitch of a time getting the crank sprocket off of the crank snout. Nissan doesn't believe in threading the crank sprocket to make removal easy, so it was time to bust out the drill and tap set. Got it to come off eventually!

http://distilleryimage3.s3.amazonaws.com/6c15512873c611e2a88722000a1f90d0_7.jpg

That's it for now. Didn't figure making 2 different threads was worth it lol.

DeleriousZ

Spent quite a bit of time on her on the weekend. Got all of the vacuum lines sorted out on both sides of the engine bay (well, removed everything from the driver's side and re-ran the heater stuff). The vacuum stuff on the passenger's side was completely rock solid so that had to be replaced. Hopefully the heater should work now, don't really want to open up the dash to fix all that.

I grabbed some fans out of a '97 maxima, it took some cutting of the sides to fit in there, but overall they fit and should work great. Need to get them wired in with some relays and a controller.

http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/5586/20130217235745776.jpg

I also hung the new fenders, they're in much better shape than the old ones, but they're not the right colour unfortunately. Just going to have live with it until I can get some paint on the rest of the front of the car.

In the process of fabbing up a new bracket for the coil and PRW-2 ignitor, should look pretty clean hopefully!

Figured out a pretty silly solution for my BOV problem, going to be quite hilarious if it works out.

DeleriousZ
02-20-2013, 11:02 AM
Spent more time in the garage last night, got some more stuff done.

Did up a new bracket to mount the coil and prw-2 igniter, I pulled a bracket off of a Nissan Stanza that uses the same coil and modified it to fit. I was able to retain rubber bushings between the coil and the bracket to dampen vibrations. The igniter is bolted directly to the bracket so it should heatsink pretty nicely.

http://distilleryimage3.s3.amazonaws.com/6f5666707b2711e2ace922000a1f90f6_7.jpg

The PRW-2 has some pretty small holes for bolting it down, and finding m5 bolts that are long enough seems to be a tall order. I used a couple of the old wire style hose clamp bolts and they fit pretty well.

Next I pulled off the metal S pipe to check out the turbo. Good news is that there's very little shaft play and the compressor wheel looks great from what I can see, so there should be lots of life left in the turbo.

I then got rid of the weird bleed style boost controller that was in there, and capped off the port on the compressor housing. I then ran a vacuum line from the wastegate to my old MBC, then from the mbc to the port below the brake booster vacuum line to read manifold signal rather than compressor signal.

Going to head to the junkyard tonight to see if I can nab a temp sensor off an older bmw, they're dual temp for 90/98*c which should work great for high/low speed fan switching. Might see if I can hunt down some high current relays while I'm there if there's time.

Got a bit more done tonight, loving all this garage time, makes things feel like they're moving along pretty well! I got the intake set up and held down. I'm not sure if I like the fact that it's sitting right behind the radiator fans, so I might have to do something to shield it off. That's the one drawback of going electric fans I guess!

The bottom part uses the stock piece from the original airbox, and the top piece is just a bit of aluminum flatbar I found in the back of the car lol.

And I'm also going to need to find a set of new spark plug wires for it, the ones on the car right now are OG.

That stance is great! I have a soft spot for all older Nissans/Datsuns especially the z31s!

Mostly me being a lazy sob. Needs an alignment badly, a tune and some various other things here and there. Mainly I need to get a bottle of argon for my tig to get things rolling, but that seems to be way more difficult than it should be. Trying to get it thru work but it's a huge runaround.

Need a hook-up for Argon? Let me know...

So recently I decided I wanted to start doing more stainless exhaust, and wanted to have a purging setup. After looking around at some dual regulator setups I figured I'd try and set it up a different, less expensive way.

I know some people use Y adapters with flow control on them, which does work, but you can't monitor the flow of each separate line for the purge and the torch. I saw this on an everlast welders forum and decided to give it a rip for myself.

http://distilleryimage11.s3.amazonaws.com/03688172dd4811e2a2e222000a9e48a3_7.jpg

I tried it out last night and it works pretty well! Have full control over both the torch line and the purge line.

Did a bit on some stainless to mild joints, still pretty rusty. Having trouble getting comfortable over the torch again, I really miss the welding table I had in vancouver, that thing was perfect.

Finished up welding the rear exhaust piece v2.0 Added in another muffler that I had from a previous setup to quiet things down a little bit. I was undecided on what I was going to do for the tip, but for now I decided to just go with a turn down. Going to change it up once I order some parts but this should do in the meantime.

I took the car out for a decent drive tonight, first to hit up the car wash (illegal to wash car in your driveway in this city) for her first real bath in ages, then took it home for a while, then back out again to get gas, her first full tank in a long time as well!

Feels awesome to be back driving it around again, it's crazy the amount of looks you get in the car, and people coming up and asking you stuff. I had some guy ask me how fast I go through tires lol. Things went pretty well for the first run, coilovers feel nice and stiff, didn't take it around any hard corners though, just cruising for the most part with a couple blasts here and there. The new exhaust is quiet enough to allow me to think while driving it, but it's still pretty darn loud. The external wastegate with screamer pipe sounds awesome, can really tell when you get near the spring pressure (set at 3-4psi now lol, damn low wg spring.) Getting a lot of flutter, the BOV is a bit too tight right now I think, need to do some tuning on it.

I noticed a speed dependent whine after a while, thinking it might have something to do with the differential (maybe), will check fluid this weekend and see if it's low. Also the car developed a click/pop when turning tight corners (parking) near the end of the run. Kind of sounded similar to what my subaru was doing when the camber plates were wearing out, but that shouldn't be the case for me. Might have something to do with the tension rods, or a number of other things. Will look into it more later too.

Pretty sure I spotted a beyond member in a white GTR along 32nd ave tonight too.

The whine could also be your hub bearings in the back. See if the noise goes away if you turn left or right.

DeleriousZ

I sure hope it's not any wheel bearings in the rear, I just finished replacing them lol.

Ahh ok, well maybe not then. If it goes away when you turn a direction, it is one of them. Had that in my rx7 years ago. replaced diff, diff oil, had driveshaft balanced, haha. Then one day a porsche guy told me to see if it goes away in turns. It did, when i turned left it went away, turned out to be the wheel bearing. Stupid press in crap.

Good to know though, thanks for the tip. Perhaps I did something horribly wrong and the new bearing is waiting to explode lol.

ultra sick build!

nice work. I think the z31 is really under-rated. It makes a fantastic highway cruiser despite it's more primitive rear suspension compared to the s13+ and z32+ models.

Best thing about these is they have way more potential and bang for buck than newer Z's and can be had for next to nothing.

Thanks for the complements guys, helps keep the motivation up lol.

Took it out again tonight, the popping is mostly gone. I'm assuming it was mostly just sticky joints/bearings that needed freeing up from so many years of sitting lol.

Adjusted the BOV a bit, was getting pretty solid flutterdump.

Whine is still there, doesn't seem to change based on load or clutch position, just speed. Differential was a little low, topped it up. Will take it out again tomorrow and see, doubt it's going to fix anything though.

I adjusted mine so that it WOULD flutterdump.

Runs great, still hunting down a few odd noises here and there. I want to get all the mechanical bits sorted before I fork out for a tune, don't want something silly breaking on the dyno and ending the day early.
