My mom has a handheld vacuum cleaner that's starting to live its life out (~15 years!) and my sister and I would like to get her a new one. Does anyone have any good recommendations for one? We're not looking to break the bank, but we'd like something decent.

On a related note, don't these look fucking awesome?!

I've got the dyson dc16. Great little handheld, gets at all the crumbs my kid leaves on the couch and ottoman. Easy to empty, although it can get messy when the dust floats around. I'm biased, I have a dyson upright too.

I have an Electrolux and it is good - great suction and easy to empty. It doesn't drop crumbs dirt back out. The battery is a little quick to drain, but not a huge deal. They are a LOT less than the Dysons, about $60 at The Bay.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Looks like the Dysons might be the winner.

Try the Shark ones at Crappy Tire. They go on sale cheap and are really powerful.

They're really loud and get pretty hot. I've got one of those to clean the car. Not that the dyson is a silent performer, but I'll take that over the shark for in home use.

Best Handheld Vacuums. (http://www.consumersearch.com/handheld-vacuums)

"Black & Decker's PHV1800 18 Volt Pivot Vac (*Est. $70) is a more moderately priced vacuum that outperforms the Dyson DC16 in comparison reviews of cordless handheld vacuums. Testers for Popular Mechanics say that although the Pivot Vac was a few seconds slower than the DC16 to pick up the 32 ounces of flour, it was much more effective in the wet kitty litter test. That fact, combined with the lower price and longer battery life, convinced Popular Mechanics testers that the Pivot Vac deserves the top spot. User reviews of the PHV1800 are also excellent. Owners posting to Epinions.com, where the Black & Decker hand vacuum has a perfect overall score, say it's powerful, quick to empty and easy to use. A few users say it's a bit louder and heavier than they'd like. Nearly 200 owners posting to Amazon.com give the PHV1800 a high average rating of 4.5 out of five stars, with most of the reviews giving the handheld vacuum perfect scores. Owners report good suction and excellent all-around design. The Pivot Vac has a 10-postion pivoting nozzle and comes with an upholstery brush, a small crevice tool and a wall-mountable charging base."
