View Full Version : Insurance for trucks vs cars?

Im just wondering why it seems to be so much more to insure a truck than a car? For example:

1992 Nissan 180SX with mods: Fire, Theft, 2 million liability = $2016 a year.

1995 Ford Ranger 4 Cylinder stock: 1 million liability = $3000 a year.

Whats the deal with that? High accident rates or rollovers? Fuel economy? Any insight into this?

Thanks in advance.

Something's been screwed up here six ways from Sunday. For the liability portion there is no difference between cars & trucks. Liabiliity only (PLPD) is based purely on you and your record and has nothing to do with the specific vehicle.

Well then TD is messed up. When I did basic quotes for all sorts of vehicles, it changed for everything. Regardless I decided theres no way I can afford another $3000 a year for a truck just to move a quad around so im going to buy a trailer and hitch for my car anyway.

How old are you, any claims or any at fault accidents ? My Titan costs me less than 1G a year with collision. I would shop around if I got those quotes you got...

I went from full insurance on an 08 Civic SI @ 190/mnth to PLPD on a 99 jeep cherokee 4x4 @89/mnth.

I love trucks. lol

Im 19, not tickets, no accidents, clean record. Its rediculous what they want for a truck. For the insurance alone I can buy a trailer hitch, trailer, and quad, which is exactly what im going to do.

At 16 with a 1/2 ton 2004 4x4 I'm paying $2100 for 1mil liability and fire and theft.

Have you seen the way people drive trucks??? That would explain not some of it, but ALL of it!! Everytime I see a pickup, it's being driven BY a fucking retard, driving LIKE a fucking retard.

Insurance is all a numbers game and rates reflect it. There are a hell of a lot more rangers on the road then Nissan 180sx's. Less cars + less claims = lower premium.

Give it time, the more these 180sx's are piled into other cars/guardrails by the fanboys it'll be a matter of time when there stupid expensive to insure.

Ha when I insured my 180, I was so happy, the cost was less than my Ford Escort. I suppose you may be right, but insurance for that thing hasnt gone up yet.

Well it turns out there was an error on TDs site when I did the quote. I just re-did one for basic coverage with a 1997 Dodge Ram 3500, and it was only $1762 a year.

Yeah, I'm with TD meloche, and there's 0 difference between $1million liability on our '74 1/2 ton, compared to our '91 dsm.

Injure someone, damage their vehicle or property.

Make sure if the truck is a secondary vehicle and not your daily driver that you insure it as a pleasure vehicle. Insurance will be less. And I have that type of insurance on a vehicle with TD so they do it.

In his case it won't make a difference. Being that he is GRID rated his age & vehicle usage do not come into play.

Sometimes companies will go below the GRID even at his age. They are not allowed to go above GRID rates but they can go below all they want.

I found that using an insurance broker has saved me tons of money and headaches. I pay 2100 a year for FULL coverage on my 09 Dakota with 4 tickets (One for speeding less than 20 over, two for illegal u-turn and one for "failure to produce insurance card" just after my truck had been broken into on my driveway and my entire glove box emptied out, never argued it because it came with no points and I'm busy). I also only pay about $120 a year for my FZ6 and about 50 a year for my new WR250F.

Not to mention you can ask your broker advice without risking the insurance company increasing your rates.

Yes, companies CAN write someone at his age below the GRID but it's pretty rare.

Obviously being in the position I am, I completely agree with you on the value of a (good) broker. Although a bad broker can do more harm than good....lol.
