Hello, i am wondering what car would be a good first car. Was looking into buying a mustang but people told me they are expensive on insurance.

Anyone with any knowledge on the subject know a decent car with cheap insurance premiums for newer drivers?

Anyone know if this would be a decent car for the price? How much would insurance cost.

How are we supposed to know how much your insurance will cost without having any information about your gender, age, driving history, etc?

Call an insurer and they'll happily give you a quote.

whatever you do, do not buy a 88 Mr-2 N/A or a 86 Celica GTS. Total shitbags.

Seriously, could one be more vague?

What is your budget?
Will you be under your parents insurance?
What type of vehicle do you prefer?

If your looking for good, basic transportation - a 1991 or newer mazda b2200 truck is bomb proof (except maybe for the body).

400,000 kms on these vehicles is normal (not that you should look for something that used) and you can buy one for under $2k - insurance will be cheaper too.

Keep in mind guys: he is in Ontario.

My co-worker is from Ontario, he had a Mustang out there so I can vouche that they would be expensive for a first car.
If you wanted a fast Ford, I'd suggest a 93-97 Ford Probe GT, then do whats known as a KLZE engine swap.
The engine, it just bolts right in, same wiring harness. A mechanic can do the swap for a few hundred bucks (600-800 or so).
This is that KLZE engine I spoke of.

It was offered in the JDM Mazda MX6, and no where else. The Ford Probe/Mazda MX6 is basically the exact same car minus the interior & exterior. 90% of the parts are interchangable.
That shouldn't be too bad on insurance, its a FWD car, and will still be decently fast while being reliable. Being a 2.5L V6, its not bad on gas or like I say: insurance.

Or if you wanted, Check into a Ford Focus SVT. It has a I4 putting out a decent 170hp. Not the BEST handling sport compact I've ever driven: but still fast and fun to drive. The cool part? everytime you get your SVT serviced at the dealership, you get a free "SVT wash" which means a free wash & vacuum.
Here are the specs for a Focus SVT

EDIT: about that '85 Buick you posted, sure if you want something dirt cheap on insurance, and not at all fun to drive, be my guest. Im sure it would be comfy at least. Too bad you guys get some nasty snow falls out there, and a RWD car such as that wouldn't be TOO good of a choice. I'd stick to a FWD car for your first car until you grasp proper control in all driving situations. Its easy to get in over your head with a RWD car in winter as a novice driver.

An early model Ford 4cyl,they are cheap to run,low insurance, plenty of parts and such basic engines are easy to work on for the DIY enthusiest.
