Very happy with the results. Thank you Spy Design in Okotoks for the week's worth of hard work, turned out great! Only problem is, it's not easy shooting pictures of the car. Pics need a LOT of post processing to make it look like it does in real life. It looks much lighter in pictures. I've edited it as much as possible to show what it looks like in person.

Now the tough part begins, the hunt for suspension and wheels to match the new color. Desperately need it now. At least I have the winter to figure it out.

Benyl's C63 came out for a quick shoot tonight too. Good comparison from the original color.

this i cant say i understand...

why would you take a brand new benz and change the nice black to a completly matte finish?

to each his own but im not really digging it :dunno:

rage2
11-08-2009, 01:53 AM
Cost is going to depend on the car. You can always call and ask them how much it'll cost.

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=spy+design+okotoks

Because my car was brand new and no color change, it's a little cheaper. If there's a color change involved, you have to take stuff apart so the original color doesn't show inside the shadows. It costs the same price as a full 3M job, so I got a color change and paint protection for the same price. Can't complain.

They do everything that you can see with the doors closed. Open the doors and you'll see the original color. Pretty much same coverage as full 3M. I did choose a few things to stay the original color to add a little contrast to it. Gonna check it out in daylight to see if I made a good choice, if not, then I'm gonna get those areas wrapped too.

Just something different and new to try out. Matte black is one of those colors that some people like, and some people hate. I like it, and that's all that really matters.

Besides, it takes 30 mins to go back to the original pristine paint when I get sick of it.

I viewed their website briefly but it sucked - they may want to bring your car on as a testimony to their work.

what do you have in mind for rims? I'm trying to picture something and I think crome or satin finish HREs would completely deck the car out.

It's called 3M Controltac, basically a vinyl material that stretches and has air channels to eliminate air bubbles for vehicle applications. It's a printable material too if you want to print shit on it.

Hey Rage,

Few questions:

a) Do you know how thick the vinyl is?

b) did they use a laminate over the original vinyl for added protection? I've heard some shops using a Gloss black vinyl with matte overlaminate for a very strong durable wrap.

c) How long did the whole wrap take?

d) Did they give you any information on how to maintain the vinyl? Can you use sealant on it?

e) What happens if you get a tear in the vinyl after a year or so? I'm assuming you have to replace the whole panel at this point, will the vinyl panel that is replaced match the rest of the panels color? Fading?

Looks amazing!
Thanks.

haha! We were both going to go Matte to make our cars less similar. Boy would that have been gay if we both did it. Luckily, rage2 found out I was trying to get pricing and we had to decide who was going to do it.

We both have full car wraps, just mine is see through. haha

BTW Rage, I think it's time to think about get all the amber out of the front like:

http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/4224/imageop.jpg

And is there a thicker protection on the front of the hood? I keep see a color variation in your pics about 1/3 front the front, cutting horizontally across the hood.

Looks good, so many little creases and lines everywhere, this car would be up there in the difficult spectrum of cars to wrap.

I can't figure out how they went around the emblems on the back, I don't see how it's possible to do that without removing them.

very nice.

@Eibbus
-Soap and water to clean, no such thing as maintaining it.
no wax needed because its matte.
I've used spray detail but its not needed.

-Time to wrap? They either did it in one full day or a two day period, if you work steady good "wrappers" can wrap a car in 8 hours or so.

-tearing, haha, if you get a scratch it doesn't tear across the panel like a window with a crack. There is no reason for the vinyl to scratch in normal situations.

a) It's a little thinner than 3M clear bra, so it'll damage easier.
b) Nope, just the vinyl.
c) A few days.
d) A little. I was told to just soap/bucket wash, rinse and dry. It leaves no water spots. It's a lot easier to clean than paint.
e) No clue, will let you know when it happens haha.

Not a big fan of the clear reflectors on a black car. I did a few photoshops and ended up with amber + smoke which fits the best for my tastes.

As for the color variation, it's the angle of the hood + lighting. Like I said, shooting this car is fucking tough now. The matte finish eats up all the light!

They went around the MB emblem. The C63, AMG, and 6.3 side emblems were removed and reinstalled.

this will usually cover the cost of the vinyl material if you're lucky.
So for 1k$ you will get a roll of vinyl in a box beside the car.

The cost of laminated vinyl (gloss white) for your vehicle (my crx) is $1166.40. The cost of vinyl without laminate is $583.20. No text, no install. Thanks, Kim

As for how low I want to go, I've called the city and they're going to remove the curb to my driveway.

this low?

that low+cup kit for speed bumps (and with a cup kit you would not need to remove your curb) :bigpimp:

Because they did a great job on the 430, GTR and the Diablo. Funny, all the spotted threads for wrapped cars in this thread is done by the same guy haha.

Looks very nice, I really like it! Have you ever thought about blacking out the tails?
It's already smoked. Blacked looks stupid IMO.

Very happy with the results. Thank you Spy Design in Okotoks for the week's worth of hard work, turned out great! Only problem is, it's not easy shooting

Hey S, car looks great man. I took pictures of my GTR in the snow, wasn't easy --- I agree. I am going to take some dusk shots on a tripod using my 5DM2 and 16-35L.

Looks great, would love to see it in person as it sounds like the pictures don't do it justice.

So you just put the vinyl wrap over the 3M that you had done the week before?
