View Full Version : SPOTTED: Calgary Police doing laser on Barlow in almost pitch black conditions...

So I didn't think they were allowed to do this... but...

I was just exiting from Deerfoot (by 130th Ave) onto Barlow, turning left at the casino. I see some guy standing on the side of the road. All of a sudden he jumps in front of 3 cars, almost gets hit and the cars drive away....

I pull a u-turn by the casino to see if some dude is drunk trying to kill himself by jumping in front of cars. I get back on Barlow, it's super dark (because the lights are burned out) but you can vaguely see his shadow on the southbound lane (I'm back on northbound). I go up barlow, and pull another u-turn...

After getting southbound, It turns out to be a police officer doing laser in the pitch black. He has a ghost car, ALL lights are off. For some reason the vest he had on was barely reflecting... Most of the cars he was trying to pull over wouldn't even stop (you could barely identify him).

Are they allowed to do this in pitch black conditions?

as long as the radar can receive after hitting the target, you can do it night or day. i've been caught by radar gun on 14th coming out of the underpass at night for speeding, cop had reflective vest and a red 'lightsaber' thing lol definitely saw him then

Why wouldn't they be able to do it at night?

That happened to my buddy last night. He was driving down memorial drive around like 10 pm, were talking and all of a sudden i see a flash. Pitch dark outside, i couldnt even see the cop car or the police officer. I have never heard or seen of this before. Police can laser you then take a picture of your plate at the same time? I thought thats what red light cameras are for:nut:

You sure you didn't pass a caravan? I've seen them out at all hours of the night, sometimes they're subtle in where they park so the flash seems out of no where.

dude, i've been dinged on memorial twice now. Very sneaky people who are parked in an un-marked car on the side of the road with their lights off. You pass it and then bam bright flash.

Hate memorial cause speed limit is always changing which is bs. Keep it at 60 and be done with it.

There was one on deerfoot last weekend right at 64th exit, caught him LAST LAST second and hit the breaks to avoid a ticket, they are sneaky bastards in there dark blue vans while pitch black out

If you meen redlight camera no. We were not in a intersection just driving down the road and all of a sudden a big flash appears.

well Calgary has photo radar which are unmarked civilian cars with cameras in them to catch speeders

hahah that is the most fail thing ever.

Driving from Hope to Merritt I had a cop jump in front of me from behind a sign. There was absolutely no chance of stopping so I swerved and continued on my way. It took me a few good seconds before I even realized WTF he was trying to do, but by then I was a good 100m away

It is perfectly legal, but it is up to the officers discretion. Personally,if i were an officer i wouldn't risk my life to fill my quota . . .

Once for me, I think it was a red caravan that caught me, usually see it on memorial now.

In bad visibility, it is incredible that he wasn't hit at all. Stepping in front of a car that is going 60 km/h or more (if the driver is speeding) and assuming the driver has seen you is very dangerous even when the street lights are not burnt. I hope he learned to maybe reposition himself to a better lite location to pull people over after a couple of close calls and people not stopping for him.

Yah some of these officers lack common sense. I almost took one out last year... had to lock up the brakes. Buddy just walked out right in front of me to flag down the car that was speeding next to me. Note to CPS that high visibility vest you're wearing won't save you.

Speed limit was 70, so he was pulling people over doing 80km/h+...

All I know is I could barely see his vest...

I was just surprised how he jumped infront of like a group of 3 cars. They all swirved and kept going... lol I don't know how they were supposed to know he was a cop, lol.

Saw what van?

I'm talking about a police in a ghost car doing laser... Not photo-radar...

they dont use radar anymore
their using laser scanner, it catches the movement of how fast you were going and and the occupant, ive gotten a chance to use there in a ride along, and theyve completly discontinued radar scanners and switched right over to laser, much more handy for them...

personally i think its very dangerous doing that, not worth getting hit by a car in pitch black darkness..

you get one of these tickets now adays its fuckin ipossible to beat it, since it locks in your speed, it catches your face picture also, you have zero way of beating it...

The one thing I am really looking forward to getting out of this city is not having to deal with cps anymore. They have maybe 2 cops working on real crimes and real issues and then the other 99.9999% are just meter maids with guns that have nothing better to do than give out tickets.

I've never seen such a cash grab police operation. Before anyone gets all huffy and puffy I've lived in 5 provinces in Canada and this is the only time where I've hated the police. In all other places I lived they were pretty decent....Calgary they are a joke...Everytime there is a little break in the clouds they put cops on macloud trail by Chaparal. Probably 4 5 times a week at least.

Cops in Calgary are nothing but a means for the city to collect money for useless infrastructure projects and crooked politics.

:werd:

chapparall is the worst are by macleoud to have cops, its getting super old....

heads up also macleoud heading north going right into anderson, when the zone turns 70, they LOVE to sit right behind a sign with a laser detector..... usually between 7am-8am, and anytime after sunset.

got a $161 ticket that i need to pay from there! :banghead:

and ekguy ive probably seen u in chapparall half a dozen times already haha

probably. Calgary's finest called me at home yesterday accusing me of smoking pot at the lake haha. I was having a cigarette as I don't like driving and smoking cigs at the same time. They are a waste of time in Calgary. I honestly think people should be able to have faith in their police force where they live....I have none whatsoever when it comes to cps. I've lived in many different cities and towns in Canada and Calgary has by far the worse cops I have encountered.

They have gang members going all gungho in the city and yet they probably waste 90% of resources catching people speeding or smoking cigarettes hahaha. Fucking useless.

oh and on a side note I've definitely seen cops do this before as well at the spot both me and the poster after me posted about.

It really isn't safe to be jumping out in front of vehicles in low light situations....Dunno how they can think it is.

Cops were out in full force this morning, I saw a lot on my morning drive to school.

Some nice Asian lady in a Versa tipped me off about a laser on 14th street southbound by flashing her high beams. Mad props to her, even though I wasn't speeding to begin with.

There were some cops outside of Hidden Valley on Beddington tonight. Not strange to see them on Beddington catching speeders, they are here all the time, but this is the first time Ive seen them out at night in pitch dark catching speeders. I flashed my high beams of course...I think everyone should do that to warn of speed traps.

Saw them too, I've been updating trapster.com so people with this on their iphones and blackberries get the signal. Done it twice as I saw they've been setup there for a good 4 hours. He was setting up at around 5:30.
I also flash my lights or pump my brakes to signal people behind, if I can. Don't wanna get caught.

Update that trapster guys, I think it's the best way to report cash cows. Not just a beyond post.

It really shouldn't, but it still amazes me that people are this clueless.
