Came to work this morning and most buildings were close. The Ctrain was dead. When did today become a holiday that people took off? Maybe because I work for a US company. they seem to care more about money. lol.

Remembrance Day is a stat now, so pretty much everyone gets it off. That said, I'm at work... :(

I'm working too. I guess the Forzani Group figures that since we get family day off, we don't get to take time out to remember those who died for us... :dunno:

working too in lieu of sometime during xmas

is downtown parking free today?

At work. Canadian O&G private company. We get Dec29th off instead. Basically, the year's holidays are manipulated to get Dec 24-Jan2nd off.

Man, if rush hour was only like today. I cut my commute time by like 90%.

I'm working today and taking Friday off. I feel guilty about it because this is one of the stats that actually has meaning behind it for *all* Canadians.

I will still give my silence at 11am and vets still get my respect every other day of the year. Unfortunately, there are others who think 1 day of rememberence means they can forget about the vets every other day of the year.

Today gives me an opportunity to catch up on paperwork and not be interrupted. Anyway, back to work! :whipped:

Street should be free. Parkades should be $2-$3.

Yup...that's just like our company. Work today for another day off at Christmas. There are people here who are choosing to take today off instead, but not me as I can still remember the fallen soldiers while working and will take part in the 2 minutes of silence at 11am.

Oh and traffic was great today - wish it was like this everyday.

For the Forzani employee, today is an official statutory holiday in Alberta and as such, you should be paid your usual wage for the day PLUS time-and-a-half for all hours worked.

For the others that are working and are making a trade for a day off somewhere else, you should get your regular wages plus another holiday off with pay.

See this link (http://employment.alberta.ca/SFW/1472.html) for more details.

worst part about today is the fact that even though im at work most places are closed including starbucks. I had to buy from second cup (yuk) had to repeat myself 5 times because the woman couldent understand english.

Anyhow 11 rolls around im doing my silence then getting on with the day.

Pretty dead here in Bankers Hall, although the elevators / floors aren't "locked" (i.e. require an access card) like they are in the evening and on weekends.

Hopefully the old dude in security will make an announcement on the intercom around 11am like he did last year (ya I was working on Rememberance Day last year too...).

Speaking of which, what's open for lunch? My only option right now is walking all the way over to Co-op. I guess there's crack Mac's Subway (I'd rather starve).
What's everyone else doing?

I'm working today, the company doesn't take today off but uses it as a floater for another long weekend like canada or august long.

I loved the commute today, and free parking downtown on the street

Lucky I have leftover Papa John's for lunch. Anything open for lunch, maybe the Moxie's.

How far are you mr2mike?

See that's the thing, at the last place I worked in. I can choose either or as some sorta flex day. Here, they claim the company is not based out of AB so Family Day's out, and I can deal with that.

Today is what I don't understand, only the staff from operations get the day off. But all other management level staff has to come in as if it was a normal day.

Working, but they're giving us the day off Dec 24 instead :dunno: Works out for me, I was going to have to take the 24th off anyways.

But just because I'm working the holiday it doesn't mean I'm not hungover or productive

Moxie's isn't far a block or two. I'm sure its open but I don't really want to take 1.5hrs to eat. I find they're slow at lunch and if it's the only place open... ugh!

I'm just gonna drive to Co-op. (*lazy)

Im skipping lunch and just leaving early and then eat at home. Fiance gets the day off, so I might as well go home early.

And ya our building had a moment of silence. Someone did it over the intercom.

West tower.

So the guy did do an announcement again this year, but I think it was a minute late (at 11:01am), meaning that I got to stand for an extra minute of silence (from 11:00am to 11:03am).

If you were scheduled to work today, then you should have been paid your regular wages plus time-and-a-half on top of that.

The exception to this is if you're a manager, in management, a supervisor, etc.

If that's the case you aren't entitled to SHIT.
I'm salaried, and I'm working, and technically we're not entitle to anything, but we get to pick a day off in lieu. I'm taking Friday off.

Correct you are, HungryJack, and for sevewone - believe you're still entitled to holiday pay even if you're a part time employee. Check out Alberta's Employment Standards at http://employment.alberta.ca/SFW/996.html

Not in Alberta. . .

In fact, it is a stat ONLY in Ontario (where Remembrance Day is not a stat, along with a few other provinces).
