lol when you posted this thread I just finished watching Throwdown as well, but it was Red Velvet cake battle. Damn, that show actually showed me how shitty Bobby Flay is outside his dominant style of cooking.

Joey's has them on their menu right now. It was pretty tasty when I was at the Chinook location. 3 tacos, 10-12 bucks? I can't remember but it was good.

someone suggested Salt & Pepper, but I don't think they have them there. at least they didn't last time I was there, a couple of years ago.

the obvious choice would seem to be Taco Del Mar (aka taco of the sea), however the franchise owners here don't think albertans want fish tacos, and so they don't carry it

other than that i'm not sure. as some have suggested, you might try some of the more 'upscale' chains like earls and Moxies (?), however it's not going to be freshly prepared food and i could pretty much assure it will be far from authentic.

Your best bet is to make them at home. Here is the recipe I've been using for a long time now. It's a combination that I put together using what I thought were the best parts from a bunch of different recipes. if you're on a budget, you can use a ghetto white fish (e.g. talapia) instead of halibut. the white sauce is also excellent. i make it all the time and use it for burgers, dipping sauce, etc.

Fish and batter
1 pound halibut, cut into 1/2- x 1/2-inch cubes
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon fine sea salt
1/2 teaspoon ground pepper
1 cup dark beer, room temperature

White sauce
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 lime, juiced
1 jalapeno pepper, minced
1 teaspoon minced capers
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon dried dill weed
1 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper

Garnish
1 1/2 cups shredded cabbage
1 lime, halved crosswise

white corn (NOT flour) tortillas (as many as you want)
Vegetable oil (for deep-frying)

For batter and fish:
Whisk flour, salt, and pepper in bowl; pour in beer, whisking until batter is smooth. Let stand 15 minutes. Sprinkle fish with salt and pepper. Squeeze some lime juice over each strip. Let stand 15 minutes. Mix fish into batter. Pour oil into medium skillet to reach depth of 1 inch. Attach deep-fry thermometer; heat oil to 350°F. Slide 4 fish strips into oil. Fry until golden, about 4 minutes. Transfer fish to paper-towel-lined baking sheet; place in oven. Repeat.

For white sauce:
In a medium bowl, mix together yogurt and mayonnaise. Gradually stir in fresh lime juice until consistency is slightly runny. Season with jalapeno, capers, oregano, cumin, dill, and cayenne.

For tortillas:
Preheat oven to 200°F. Heat skillet over medium heat. Stack 2 tortillas. Sprinkle top with water. Place in skillet, wet side down. Heat 1 minute. Sprinkle top with water. Turn stack over; heat 1 minute. Transfer stack to large sheet of heavy-duty foil. Repeat. Enclose tortillas in foil. Place in oven.

Assembly:
Fill each warm tortilla with fish cubes. Top with sauce, cabbage and squeeze of lime.

sorry for all of these posts, but i just did a google search and i found the recipe for the fish tacos made on throwdown. i have to say that isn't a typical/authentic fish taco recipe... it's VERY modern and not something that most people would think of when they post fish taco.

the main elements are corn torts, deep-fried (or sometimes, but rarely, grilled) fish, shredded cabbage, white sauce, and lime for squeezing. that's it. the recipe i listed above will produce this typical fish taco.

the throwdown recipe is here, though, if that's what you're looking for. it's really not a fish taco, though ;) http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/throwdowns-fish-tacos-recipe/index.html

One of the reasons I cant cook elaborate stuff is cause of the condo issue, so I hardly ever deep fry anything, althought I found my side burner on my BBQ works pretty good for deep frying on my balcony

There is a new deep fryer out that uses like 1 tablespoon of oil

http://www.tefal.com/All+Products/Cooking+appliances/Fryers/Products/ActiFry/Actifry.htm

So I wonder if it cuts down on the smell.

Seems like everyone watched that throw down but I am going to try nonlinear recipe once I am feeling healthy enough to cook meals again.

I hate Batali more than Bobby I dunno why. Sure Morimoto FTW in America, but he was my least favorite in the actual Iron Chef. It was all about Ken man..

On a sidenote.. fish tacos

nah, that's OK. i'd prefer you and your type to stick to Julio's Barrio and stay out of the way of people who know what they're doing.

first off, fish tacos are baja cali, not 'mexican' and certainly not tex-mex. secondly, if you're so knowledgeable, then why on earth did you post such a poor attempt at a fish taco? EVERYTHING about that taco was wrong. :dunno:

No worries, I didnt take it personally. I take back the douche remark, lol

The taco tasted really good, even though the presentation wasnt there. The fish was extremely fresh which definitely helps. Oh and BTW, Baja Cali is in Mexico and if ya want to get technical California, Texas, Arizona and Nevada all used to be Mexico. The border crossed the people, not the other way around...

^^yea, i was trying to say that it was a regional thing (baja cali, mexico, and across the border into California, as you mentioned). but atypical of general "mexican." that's why i put it in quotes lol. but yea, i was just giving you a hard time man ;)

If you're ever in Tofino BC, try Sobo's. It's a small cafe and they serve the BEST fish tacos and polenta fries I've ever tasted.
