if it prevents the speed cameras and red light cams to be able to see the plate on the picture, then it is for sure illegal

I'm pretty sure the law is that you can't "obscure" your license plate.
I think if a cop wanted to be a dick about it, you could get a ticket for anything in front of your plate, even if it's clear.
Smoked is definitely a no-no. Although some people do it, and don't get tickets.

Anything that covers your plate, or alters it in anyway is illegal.

Snow covering it is illegal
Paint peeling on the digits is illegal
plastic covers clear or obscure are illegal
etc. etc.

I got pulled over for my smoked cover once and was given a warning. The cop was like "Trying to get away from speed cameras are you?" I am like...actually I am trying to protect my vanity plate...so he let me off with a warning, been 2 years since

so it's illegal even if the cover is clear?
back in 2004 my family bought a honda from calgary honda and it came with a dealer branded clear licence plate cover

i've had smoked covers on my cars for many years. only once i was questioned by a cop about it. he told me to take it off but i never did.

20 bucks that thing cost and it has probably saved me about 1,500 in fines (big plus now they put up the speed cameras at traffic lights) :bigpimp:

What about ball hitches? everyone has them yet they would still block your license plate from a camera just enough to make a fine arguable.

Yes even clear one. They could if you a ticket if they want to enforce it to the letter. But most of the time they will only charge you as a bonus ticket on other infractions or an excuse to stop you for something else.

Also illegal but they get as much attention as clear plates even it obstruct more. Even a cop told me he get as big of a hitch ball he can find on his truck even he got nothing to tow.
