View Full Version : Cleaning up after Arson

Hey all,

My brother's car was recently a victim of arson vandalism. They broke in and lit his drivers seat on fire which dirtied up the windows, melted the door, damaged the steering wheel and burnt the roof. Arson investigators and the fire department were involved and it sucks balls because he didn't have theft or vandalism on his policy.

But anyway, his car will now forever smell of burning toxic plastic and I think he's quite hoping that won't be the case. We're going to PnP to get a new seat and such, but does anyone know any reasonably priced detailers that would be able to work out the smell/damage reasonably well? None of the cars systems were damaged in anyway so we kinda temporarily fixed the seat and he's driving it.

Get the glass clean quick. Smoke is acidic and permanently damages glass

She's a sponsor here on Beyond. I've heard a lot of good things about her detailing.

It's a Neon, so no, not a Bentley by any stretch.

We managed to get the glass er...acceptably clean. I'll let him know the smoke can permanently damage it though, thanks.

I will pass her contact info on. Do you know if her prices are fairly reasonable?

Since it's a neon and I have no pictures to see the extent of the damage.

I say part out the body panels and try to make some money off part outs and just trash the car, start over.

It's not worth the trouble, especially for a pos neon, go grab another one for 2k$ instead of spending 1k$ on cleaning a car that will always smell like burning plastic.

not to mention the possibility of future electrical problems and or other fire related problems.

Fire damage imo means car is done. I would cut losses and get a new car. Shitty as it is I believe that is your only option.

OP contacted me :)
I gave him pretty much the same advice that was already in this thread it seems. Not much a detailer can do for fire damage. Fabric and Vinyl are plastics. When they are presented with high heat and start to melt there's really nothing that can be done. I wouldn't feel comfortable charging him for something that cannot be fixed. Best bet is to replace damaged panels from pick and pull and make sure in the future you remember to add fire and theft.

Good luck to your brother!

Hi Renee,

My brothers car (a 99 Neon) was the victim of arson last night and the interior is fairly damaged but only on the drivers side. The car is still driveable but he needs to get it towed and was wondering if any of this damage is fixable? He doesn't have theft of vandalism on his policy.

I thought about you and your detailing business and was wondering if there was anything you could do for him, or if you know anybody that has experience working with arson damaged interiors.

Thanks,

Chad

He beat you by two days!

Anyone know of a place in town that sells Ozium? Checked Wally world and Canadian tire after seeing those suggested online, but no luck. Have heard some of the pot head stores might sell it, but would love to know a specific one that has it in stock. They aren't the kind of places I visit normally.

Thanks! Didn't even think of AMRE.

Although, that may be a slightly different variant from what I was hoping for. Anyone seen this version around?

Or this?

I can't read the can on the AMRE website, but I'm pretty sure that stuff is different.

AMRE used to have this Ozium product (https://www.amresupply.com/part/OZIUM-OZIUM-500-SHOT) but it was replaced by the one I had linked to above. Maybe give them a call.

It doesn't appear that ExtraSlow was even concerned about the car that this thread's OP was talking about.
