McLaren supercar hit by VW Golf

The new R4-million McLaren Mercedes Benz SLR, brought from Germany to Cape Town for an official launch, was hit by a VW Golf while being test driven in the city on Tuesday.

According to witnesses cited by the Cape Times, the Golf "sped through a red light" and hit the SLR, a left-hand drive, on the front right-hand side.

The Cape Times reports the 1700kg SLR, which is made of immensely strong carbon fibre and has intelligent crumple zones, sustained minimal damage. The Golf had to be towed away.

Eight SLRs are in Cape Town for the press launch at the V&A Waterfront’s Cape Grace Hotel on Wednesday. Around 140 international motoring journalists have been test driving the vehicle in the city, according to the daily.

The SLR, with a top speed of 334 kilometres per hour, has a supercharged Mercedez-enz AMG 5.5-litre V8, and takes 3.8 seconds to accelerate to 100 kilometres per hour.

That car is crazy tough. It hardly looks damaged at all from the pictures. I guess you need that kind of strength if you're driving 334km/h.

I feel sorry for the driver of the golf. His car had to be towed away AND he hit one of the nicest cars in the city. I bet "minimal damage" still equates to at least $10000... And still that's less than 1/50th of the value of the car.

The news story doesn't have a link back to the paper or carry the authors name or name of the paper it started in. Doesn't look real, I think someone on the net is having a little fun.

If that was a photoshop it's a damn good one. Look at teh reflection of the guy in the back left corner on the rear windows and rear fender of the car. Plus look at teh shadow on the drivers seat - I think it's from teh guy on the far right of the picture. Also, teh reflection of the VW's hood in the black paint is pretty nice. I'm thinking this pic is real....

Remember when Mr. Bean rear ended that little Geo Metro with his McLaren F1? Very minor damage on the F1, destroyed the Geo Metro.

That looks like a defibrillator (one of those heart starting machines) on the hood of the VW. Guy probably shit his pants when he crashed and then had a heart attack when he saw what he hit.

Why not? What's makes you think it hit the slr head on??? If it hit the wheel well at an angle at about 40-60km/h I can easily see how it would end up like that.

AFAIK, he sold the F1 shortly after the crash. But he has crashed and written off quite a few other cool/expensive cars at the track. Mr Bean roadraces :).

He was talking about cars and his racing hobby on Leno a few months ago hehe.

Not a chop.

I zoomed into the front right of the slr sharpened, brightened and increased the contrast a touch. You can definitely see some scratches on the fender and some dents in what looks like the plastic covering the bumper. The SLR is hiding its damage, I am sure the carbon fiber flexed and the returned to its normal shape but the supporting structures underneath are going to need replacing.

Carbon fibre doesnt mean "invincible"... its weight (or lack thereof) are much more of a factor than its strength. I remember watching mountain bike videos where you would see a carbon fibre frame literally shatter after hitting the ground a bit too hard

Hrm, are you sure that's the proper picture? I remember seeing the article years ago, and it showed minor damage to the front bumper. He also mentioned that the minor damage had cost him 80000 pounds to repair. IIRC, visually, it looked basically like a dented front end, nothing like that pic in that article :eek:.

The lady in the Metro would've been killed on impact of the McLaren looked like that after hehe.
