the evo will never make it to canada in its current form, the FMIC is not legal for canadian roads, and until they move it back (unlikely) or take it to a top mount (rx7 or wrx) (highly unlikely) we wont see the cars legal...

The EVO 8 IS legal to import to Canada.

However the one in the picture isnt an evo 8, it looks photoshopped or something, but the EVO 8 has a hood vent. Was there a black mesh strip in the hood?

Why all hot and bothered?

There's a EVO 8 in Langley for sale, test drove it too. Very nice car, but marked up to hell and highwater.

It's 50K, but they were willing to take my GTS + 10K cash on the spot.

I balked because the EVO should only be 34K Cdn, that's before I realized there will be none available in Canada. Ooops! I have no idea how they got it registered etc

Only $34K CAD? Isn't the MSRP like $29K USD? I don't know what kind of conversion you're using, but it's not going to go for $34K up here. Mid $40K's is more like it.

All you have to do is buy one from the states, and import it as per RIV rules. It's legal for Canada. I even called RIV to confirm.

Ummm, sorry but the price of cars and most other consumer goods don't fluctuate with the currency on the open market. The STi is still selling for ~$50K CAD even though the price in the US is still at $32K USD. By your calc, it SHOULD be selling for ~$40K. I'm sure the dealership will be more than willing to cut their list price by 20%

Actually, he said there was one at a dealership in Langley, he wasn't talking about importing it himself. Either way, factor in fees, duties, taxes, shipping etc, and you think you're going to import or buy an imported car for straight currency conversion? You find that dealership, and I've got a bridge to sell.

A lotus Elise is my first choice, $39,000 US MSRP but $ 59,000 plus Freight and fee MSRP in Canada ... which is still cheap ..but $ 39000 US is like $ 52,000 Can now .

There are no implications. It's legal to bring in, call and ask, all the contact #'s are on the site.

They might change it for next year though... updated lists will be out in about a month. Too bad not many people wants one bad enough to bring one in this year.

There's a dealership in BC that is taking deposits down on the Lotus when it comes to Canada. $2500 down, refundable ONLY IF THE CAR doesn't make it to Canada though. And the price again is not straight conversion. They're asking $59K. A coworker of mine checked into it.

I went through this entire drama in August of '02 when myself and an associate were able to get preproduction EVOs. Even at that time, despite the EVO not existing on any RIV list AND being certified for use in the USA by US-FMVSS, there was no way to get one legally imported. I've gone thru the import process before and will probably do so again very soon so I know the more intimate details of the import process. All those online lists on RIV/CCRA/Transport Canada are not up to date. Even if they were, the EVO would not be admissible. There are even more people who have inquired only to be rejected by RIV - check any of the Lancer EVO forums. Same deal with the MR-S. It's not listed as inadmissible, but guess what? You can't get one up here legally. There are a ton of not-so-legal ways to get the cars imported up here, but I'm not about to risk it for something as simple as a car. If it were possible, there would be a crapload of EVOs around Canada, me inclusive. Driving one here is not the problem, it's getting it fully legally imported that is. There are even ways around the issue, but they'll just end up costing more money than it's worth - that's what's stopping me.

Gov't or RIV errors or laziness to update lists won't let you keep the car here either. Once you open a file with the RIV, they verify the vehicle's VIN and description before you'll even get an inspection form. Even though you'll get past the retard border officers, they'll require you to export the vehicle later cuz you'll never get the inspection form to do a federal inspection. You need the fed inspection to register your car. Even if you get as far as the inspection, you may or may not even get the Canadian Cert label afterwards.

I'd like any of you to prove me wrong by physically importing a new EVO legally. :)

In August 2002, they would not have allowed 2003 models to be imported, as the 2003 lists weren't available until Early/mid 2003 if I remember correctly.

It's the 2003 list on RIV's site, and they don't change it mid year (not to my knowledge anyways). My calls to RIV still states that 2003 Mitsubishi Lancers of all trim (including EVO) are allowed here. I've never given them a VIN to check though, which may signify something different.

The Lancer forum guys are clearly on crack. The MR2 spyder not being listed is clearly someone not reading the official list properly. The MR-S (aka MR2 in US) is clearly listed as inadmissable. 2000-2003 MR2 to be exact.

haha if I really wanted the car, I'd try :).

I'm curious what the implications would be if prior to purchase, RIV claims the car is legal and they say it's not once it's in Canada. That would make for an interesting lawsuit.

The lists are updated monthly if there are enough changes and once quarterly by Transport Canada (at least from what I was told by RIV).

Currently the EVO 8 is on the inadmissable list by RIV... which means it's not legal to import to Canada for road use. All other EVO's are not yet legal either.

For those of you wondering how my good friend is driving his EVO8 in Canada.... helps being a dual citizen and owning enough property in the continental USA.
http://www.importconcern.ca/stock/100009/34.jpg

http://www.importconcern.ca/stock/100009/36.jpg

So he's legally driving the car here in Canada... can it be registered here, no, but that doesnt cause him any problems..... I guess if you want one, buy a house in the USA and have the car licensed there :)

Hopefully this has cleared up some of the confusion.... Also there are some other good posts about RIV and such, for importing a car from the states to Canada it's best to just check out the RIV list for admissability :) (Also some cars imported to the states IE: Skyline are still inadmissable to Canada b/c RIV is mainly for US market cars, made for the usa not imported from another country to the usa if that makes sense).

*edit* photos were taken at a Vancouver area drift event*

but as for the Evo, i believe there might be one around.. migh tnot be from this city, but hey, nothing is impossilbe

redbaron303
03-08-2004, 03:13 PM
Nope, nothing is impossible.

The RIV list is for US market cars coming to Canada.... The Skyline is not a US Market car which is why it's not on that list.... so that means it must meet the other import criteria which is the 15 year old rule :)

He's right, I've seen the car before too. The guy lives down south. I've talked to him before when he came into futureshop, he brought he car in when there was a small loop hole not too long ago, they have since "fixed" the hole, but i heard 3 managed to make it in. Its a very slick ride, the guy who owns it is in his late 40's, early 50's.

12 made it in 15 if you include the ones still owned by dealers.
Carfax is your friend :)

All are registered. How it works is if the car was registered once in canada, law dictates it can continualy be registered from that day forward regardless of admissability.

There is currently 2 owners of evo's in calgary a white, and silver RS.

to bad they only show up for shows and never mitsu meets huh cough cough 4warned? LMAO :)

Yeah, the mitsu meets haven't worked out that great for me and the family yet....but i know vertigo hasn't shown up either

Jorge's EVO isn't an RS....it's a "plain jane" 2003 EVO with the sunroof and smaller spoiler.....

There was a real EVO that showed up to the SCC held last Sat (Oct 7) -QA- snapped some pics of it... found them in the

Photos and Videos Galleries > Events and Meets > 2006 SCC - Calgary Photo Thread

I never got a chance to take a good look at it, I was busy helping run the autocross timing system.... but I came across this thread and thought I'd link the sightings with some pics.

Nobody has posted pictures of it yet? The car was at World Of Wheels show last year. I turned the corner and said, "Holy shit, an EVO!" I got pictures of a R34 too if you're still arguing about that. The deal with the Evo is that there's 6 that got into Canada prior to being blacklisted and this guy bought his at some dealership in Manitoba. They didn't even seem to know what it was, he cut a cheque on the spot when he seen it.
