View Full Version : I need help configuring linksys router to security cameras

I recently bought a security camera system.

I have it hooked up to my router. (Ethernet cord)

I have 2 steps left and I'm finished but I just can't get it to work.

The security camera manual says to have the dvr set at DHCP and HTTP Port at 1024

I have done this.

Now it says go into the router settings and change "port range forward" to the ip address assigned by the router.

I did this.

As soon as I click enable to save setting with the router I get an error "you cannot use the router ip network or broadcast address"

I have called Swann security camera company they don't have a clue and either did linksys tech support.

I am up half the night tonight so if anyone is out there and wants a challenge let me know.

Thanks guys.

What IP address did your router give the DVR? Sounds like you're trying to port forward to the network (.0) or broadcast (.255) address of your network (most probably 192.168.1.x/24).

To find the IP address the router gave your DVR, go into the 'DHCP lease table' on the Linksys, probably under 'status' or similar (I'm assuming the DVR doesn't just have a screen so you can't ask it there).

Note that you don't need to port forward through your router unless you really want to access your DVR from outside your LAN (ie. from the interwebs somewhere).

On the second picture it keeps changing it to .4 and it will save but not work. Keep in mind guys I really am NOT computer literate so bare with me on some of the jargin used in trying to get me to go somewhere within the router or else where.

The port is back to 1024 on the router.

You need to forward port 1024 to 192.168.1.105

Some other things to investigate:
= static DHCP mapping for your DVR's MAC address... if your router resets, say due to power outage, your DVR may be assigned a different IP address and you won't be able to access it from outside anymore until you come home to fix it

= set up proper access control on the DVR:
- a read-only user with a STRONG password for you to use while on the road, and;
- an admin user with a STRONG password that is only accessible from your workstation on your LAN (ie. restricted to use from a 192.168.1.xxx address)

= use HTTPS/SSL encryption to access your DVR

These security measures will help keep your DVR and LAN under your control. Especially while on the road, you have to take extra precautions against open wifi, keyloggers, sniffers, etc.

In your first picture it gives you an IP adress for the cameras(192.168.1.105)

You need to forward port 1024 to 192.168.1.105

The IP address you are trying to forward the ports to is just the example address they have in the instructions.

Okay I have 4 cameras total do I put all the same numbers for the ip address's?

Alright now were getting somewhere...I changed the ip and saved it. No more error. Here's the change.

I also have another problem...I put my ip address and :1024 in the browser and as soon as the page loads this error keeps popping up. i googled the problem but couldn't find the right awnser for vista only windows xp which I tried but that didn't work. Here's the error.

Probably under Internet Options... Security tab... you're probably on medium level, go Custom or Advanced and look for something like "run scripts from unknown/unverified publishers", change it from disabled to PROMPT (NOT just Enabled, very bad idea).

I can't seem to find this ...I see the security tap but there's 2 security areas...one under advanced and another that just says security but either one I don't see ..

run scripts from unknown/unverified publishers

That's rather daft of you, but it's your computers/data so what do I care.

Try 192.168.1.105 as the hostname, if that fails, RTFM.

I can't seem to get print screen to work.. ALT+print screen correct?

adam c
11-26-2009, 03:49 PM
alt + prtscn takes a picture of the active window
prtscn takes a picture of everything you currently see

if you are using a laptop, usually you need to hold down the FN (function) key while doing this as well

2BLUE
11-26-2009, 03:56 PM
I can paste into paint using fn,alt, printscreen but on beyond I cant it doesn't seem to work.

Back to the cameras...If I got back to my router settings and change the port for each camera will I be able to have a ipaddress with port number 1024,1025, 1026,1027 and so on so I can look at each camera seperatly?

your program should allow you to view all the cameras in one central program

if you double click on one of the cameras it should open in full screen and press ESC (escape) to go back to the previous screen

Nope doesn't do anything.

I'm trying print screen and nothing also...is there something special to do on beyond to make it appear like [img] or something?

adam c

you have to save the print screen to your hard drive and upload it like you do the other pictures

also without being able to see your camera system, no-one here will really be able to tell you how it works beyond what has already been said

good to see you got the cameras working.

2 things:

lol @ the screenshots :P For future reference, just hit 'Print Screen' (or 'fn + Print Screen' if you're using a laptop). Open up Microsoft Pain and hit 'ctrl + v' save it as a .jpg and upload it.

^ it's highly advised that you DO NOT just turn all security off. Like it was mentioned before, return your security settings to default (at least) and add your IP address to the trusted sites. That'll allow you to access your cameras while maintaining some level of security. If you're not sure how to do it, we can guide you step by step.

You mentioned that you weren't computer literate and that's cool, but I'd highly recommend you don't ignore the above advice.

This is some great advice. This ensures that your camera's are secure and reliable. If you're unsure about any points, just ask.

Okay my security setting are back to normal.

Thanks guys alot!!!

I just got another website to host the picture to show you the camera system. I wanted to view my cameras from my TV but my ps3 doesn't support the application. dammit.

Here it is thanks again for everything...

I'm guessing its advisable to delete all the pictures on this thread as anyone can see my cameras and know my ip and all that????

Can you describe how you're trying to access your cameras when on a different network?

I just get on a unsecured network and login using the software that came with the cameras or go to www.dividivi.org

so ya thats the problem if Im on another network like switch over to someone elses wifi and try to log in it wont work. I get an error. connect failed! (2) reason: (-3) no stream timeout

So if I have to be connected to my network then this is useless.

How do I make it so I can view the my cameras from any wifi?

Also my ip address has changed 3 times tonight errr
