Does anyone know how to get REALLY bad hard water stains off of glass? I am curious for 2 reasons:

1) Our boat windsheild can be cleaned for the most part, but there is always faint remains of hard water stains left on it, that seem literally impossible to remove, no matter how much elbow grease.

2) A little bit of a strange situation, but I bought an AV component rack with glass shelves for a huge discount that had been sitting in storage for a while. Somehow its box got a bit wet (haha), and as a result some rain water got on the glass while this thing was in storage. It's hardly noticable at all but on one of the pieces of glass there is some hard water marks. You can feel it as well.

For both situations I have tried windex, invisible glass, and vinegar. I've tried everything from paper towel to a good quality microfiber or terry cloth along with it.

Any suggestions for removing these stains?

Thanks!

CLR works for me, just get it in the spray bottle type.

CLR should get rid of the hard water stains.

I had that problem with my shower door once, nothing would get it off.

So I happened to be digging around under the sink and found a bottle of toilet bowl cleaner - tried that and it worked perfectly.

Interesting, thanks guys. Not sure why I didn't think of CLR. I will get some next time I'm out and see if that works.

Mr. Clean magic eraser. These things are also good for getting the hardened dust off of baseboards too.

Sometimes there is nothing you can do as the minerals and chemicals will etch the glass. You could also try a 3M pad from the grocery store. They are fine enough not scratch but abrasive enough to maybe work.

Believe it or not, Mothers wheel polish works wonders and doesn't scratch glass like you might expect it to. I resorted to this when CLR didn't work.

You can polish glass like you polish paint. I use a rotary on low speed or a dual action at 4000rpm to remove water stains. Works wonders :)

Heres another one, but its dangerous if not used responsibly. Muriatic Acid, you can get it at most hardware stores, etc. Thats if all that other stuff doest work. This works on the most stubborn stuff, no problem. You just dilute it, it has directions on the bottle as to how much.
