Been looking into trading the Z for a wagon as my priorities have changed and the 2 seater is no longer an option. I have always liked the Impreza Wagon and the Passat. I know there is quite a bit of difference between them but, any opinions of past or present owners is welcome!!

It will be my 3rd vehicle so my budget isn't to big. I would like to be around $16-$17K so these are what i have been looking at.

Interested in the Subaru Impreza 2.5 - 2006 MY

Volkswagen Passat Wagon

Any other ones that would be good?

Thoughts??

I currently have an 06 wrx wagon, it fits lots of stuff and is really handy. Winter tires and awd make crappy road conditions a breeze. Overall the car feels cheaply built, has rattles and the typical Subaru quirks. Has good power and is really easy to modify, just have to keep an eye on the transmissions.

I can fit my mountain bike in the back without even removing the front wheel. Back seats aren't too spacious, but for people under 6ft they should be fine. Gas mileage is ok, depends how you drive.

Maintenance hasn't been too bad either, that was the main reason I got this over an Audi avant. I also didn't want to have to worry about leaving it downtown or at ski hills and stuff.

The Passat wagon is going to be bigger and have a lot more space in the rear. The backs of the 2.5's aren't that big at all.

What about a Legacy or Outback? Much more comparable in size to the Passat. Jetta wagon is also a possibility.

I'd say the Subaru will give you less headaches too.

What about a V70? Comes with a 5cyl 2.5L turbo, quite spacious, etc etc.

ex:

Definite soccer mom vibe to them but I find them very nice to drive and quite reliable. Gas mileage is fine, better than most v6 SUVs.

I had a coworker with a passat wagon for about 4 months, and for the four months I worked with him, the car probably spent 10 weeks in the shop! It was terrible on maintenance.

Also the 9-2X looks nice, obviously a Subaru or "Saabaru" as they call it. But they say it has better handling, and quieter interior.

I've got an Audi allroad for sale soon in that price range, as soon as I fix the torque converter (common failure on those, getting a performance one installed).

I love it personally, beautiful looking for a wagon, lots of room, tons of comfort. You wouldn't believe what I can load into that thing (I fit 2x12's in there, with the hatch closed, lol), adjustable air suspension. 2.7 twin turbo, 315 HP, 365 ft-lbs of tq...

They are known as a bit of a maintenance pig, I think I've fixed every major common problem on mine now though.

edit: (even if you're not interested in mine, you should still take a good look at them, it's really a nice car)

I sold my Impreza and bought a Jetta Wagon TDI. Best decision I ever made for cars. The Impreza was getting prohibitively expensive to repair, and like others have said it feels cheaply made.

The Jetta (or my dad's Passat) is easy to work on, has a nice fit and finish, and I think it handles pretty similar to the Impreza on snow and ice. I put good winter tires on it, and it goes where I need it to. Never got stuck with either of them and I go all the same places.

I drove an older Subaru Impreza Outback wagon and even though that this isn't close to the type of Suabru Wagon your considering but I loved that thing the way the Subaru AWD system works is just awesome.

the same thought crossed my head but I thought, why even mention it, considering their rarity.

I haven't seen one on the road for a long long time.

Yes, indeed they are rare but a quick look at autotrader tell me that they are out there. ;)

Focus Wagon

Actuality, I liked the V50-T5 alot but I doubt even used you'd find it in that price range.

The A3's used haven't deperateciated into that price range...
I'd suggest a VW post 2003 wagon Jetta TDI, but if AWD is required, the WRX wagon is the one for you (again if you can find one in that price range)
