So, I'm driving home from my guys house this morning, heading out to go to work. I have to go down this huge hill just covered in snow drifts with my low ass civic that I thought I could never make it down without getting stuck. Im halfway down the hill when I see this car with its hood up. As I get closer I noticed the car got owned. I feel sorry for the tool..

Question: The tool is?

A. The car, as in transportation tool?
B. The tool (Driver) who should have known his car was going to light up, and taken the right precautionary measures?

"Dec 5th, couldn't get out of Royal Oak (both sides blocked by buses and snow) so we went around helping people. We came across this guy who tried too hard to get out of the snow and caused his car to catch on fire from the friction of the tire. We did get a fire extinguisher to put out the fire but didn't help much and by the time the FD got there it was too late" from vid.

How is it possible for a rwd car to catch fire from the engine bay when supposedly you say the tires caught fire from friction?

Probably for the better. Those cars are hideous.

Haha that's such bullshit. A few years ago when me and all my friends were getting our first trucks nobody could afford good tires haha, so whenever we used to get stuck the known rule was just to burnout till you roasted through the ice and got going again. Gets her done!

Brother-in-law saw this behind his house this afternoon.

Old/bad o-rings. I've seen fuel piss out of fuel pressure regulators because they were old, and the cold weather made them shrink too much.

Just because what the driver did was obvious doesn't mean that's what the OP's question was about. :guns:

Then they did it wrong. When I did my burnout that one day, I had just stopped smoking them and we were headed inside to let the car cool off.
That's when we noticed a small fire in the pile of rubber under the car. It lit up real quick and had we not caught it right then, it would have burned the car to the ground in a hurry. We put it out with water we had ready just in case, but it scared the crap out of me!!!

This is tragic, poor guy. Like getting stuck isn't bad enough, this happens.

It's possible that rubber can get hot enough to catch fire from burning out, after all rubber does catch fire, but it's not like you create a fireball while burning out. A small fire won't burn your car down unless it burns into fuel lines, which is also highly unlikely since fuel lines are usually shielded and fairly high off the ground. You need a big fire with long burning intervals to be able to light your car up in flames from the underside.

The underside of the car was covered in hot rubber. Bottom side would easily get hot enough to light the carpet on fire inside. Add in sound deadening, rubber pieces under the car for stones, etc.
There is a video of a guy doing a burnout at Hooters i town and the tires catch on fire.
Anyway, it does seem strange that it got away like that. My burnout was like 3 mins long, at 8500rpm.
