Q: about BMW

Has anyone ever heard of Alpina?

I've heard of their wheels, that's about it.... are they to BMW like AMG is to Mercedes!?

I'm just curious and trying to learn more about an "Alpina" BMW I'm looking at...

I believe Alpina more along the lines of RUF to porsche. An out of house developer/tuner. As opposed to AMG which i believe is in house.
