JANUARY 10TH BEYOND WHEELING RUN

Things recommended for the run
- Tires with good tread, prefer MT or AT tread (needed)
- Safe front and rear tow points (hooks, shackles, trailer hitch), pretty much needed, hate hooking up to bumpers and axles
- CB radio, not needed but nice if a few people have one
- Winch, not needed but nice to have a few in the group
- Whatever recovery gear you have (straps, tow straps, HiLift)
- Enough food and water for you and any passengers for the day
- Warm clothes, extra set of clothes
- Good boots
-Tools and extra fluids

We'll meet at the Smittys parking lot at 8:30AM and be on the road by 9:00AM. You can either meet us there or meet me in the south (Rockyview Hospital area). If one of the guys in the north wants to set a meetup point, that would be awesome. I like to use Channel 10 on the CB, for those that have them.

LIST OF ATTENDEES

FraserB- White Jeep Grand Cherokee
Sugarphreak- Black Hummer H3T
??Alak- Red Land Rover
Khamul- H3 Alpha

Mmmmm snow run... Leaning to yes; the 90 4runner on snow tires should be up for this; might have to look at the rear towpoint though...

Depends on the weather though, the ladies can be grouchy when it gets cold :)

My brothers Bday is on that day, so I'll confirm at a later date.

Few things to add for now.

-Vehicles MUST be equipped with a 2 speed LOW Range Transfer case.
-Shovel
-Warm Clothing
-Boots
-Extra food
-Sleeping bag
-HiLift (If you have one)
-Tool kit
-Extra Coolant
-Extra Oil
-Recovery Points FRONT and REAR, your vehicle MUST have these! If you don't have them, don't come!

The 28th is on a Monday, which I probably can't go due to work. Can we move this to a weekend?

Just a hint to those eyeballing the monday part - Saturday would be boxing day - as it falls on a weekend, you're probably going to have monday in lieu...

In other words - just about everyone has it as a stat holiday...

Its just already exsisting quad trails open to trucks. There the margret lake loop, which looks like it could be some fun.

Thats what I think we should do, a couple big hills there that I know of (never did the whole thing).

I think we should find a date that works good for everyone a little later in January. I think everyone's schedule is up in the air with the holidays, especially around new years.

Perhaps the 10th for the beyond wheeling run?

FraserB
12-21-2009, 02:51 AM
Later in the month works for me, I haven't even set a tire on these new trails yet and now with the other run I have to lead it might be a bit much. Later in January everyone should be back from holiday and back to a normal routine.

The 10th is fine for me, just need to know for sure so I can get the time off work

I don't believe so, all SRD and GAMP want is for us to monitor the trail for any excessive wear and rutting. If that happens they temporarily close them and then reopen once the trail is fixed. we should all be fine since they are technically "truck" trails.

How do you think I felt when I went in nose first!!???!!

I'm just 35 inch tires which are almost a necessity... I went plowing into that hole and nose dived!!!! Water went up to the windshield which freaked me out.....

Kinda funny having to drain the water out once I emerged!!!

I may invest in a snorkle soon...

Alak

Snorkels are a very good investment. Stops the water from getting in the intake, but it doesnt help when the water starts f--king with the fuel injection hahaha.

thats the dumbsest water crossing ever,

It was the point of the challange. First one across wins. Only nobody won because it took both teams to pull one car out.

Best part is, thats somebody's truck. They drove it home after that hahaha.

The only part I have any trouble with is the back overhang on mine because Discovery 2's have 10 more inches behind (although the wheelbase is the same as a discovery 1). When it was stock, I used to touch on the middle x-member all the time. They are good because most of the drivetrain components are higher than the bottom of the frame, so nothing really pokes down. Just a higher center of gravity when you get a fully loaded roof-rack.

The trucks shown above all have factory ride height (with uprated springs) on 235/85R16 wheels. Some wonder why they didnt go with something bigger. Fact is they dont have ruts to worry about because where they go, nobody's been before.

Its kinda funny because I remember in one trophy, I think 87 where they used range rovers, they had to change a transferbox in one of the cars, and they ended up just tipping over the car on its side and fixing it standing up.

Im one of the few in the land rover club of alberta without one. Lots of ex-ministry of defence units coming over for various members all the time. Or alot of members have series units they upgrade to TDI engines and such.

I want to own one, but...... Picture going from your hummer, to a tractor. Theres NO luxury. Hell, theres barely heat. The seat is literally a box with one of those seats like you have in the movie theater (thats what it resembles)

Better yet, picture the passenger seat in death proof. Take the ride from something made from freightliner, and the horsepower from a volkswagen beetle. No Heat, No Aircon.

But a hell of a truck off-road.

I am planning a 110 Hi-Cap pickup truck in the future. Maybe for next x-mas (but I doubt it, Im still building the DII)

Back on topic - I think in the past we've had success meeting in NW calgary and convoying out (picking up stragglers along the way).

Just got back now. Overall its pretty nice out, we ran Mockingbird to Margret Lake and then to the falls, came out Meadow Creek.

There are a few spots where 33"+ tires and lockers are an asset, particularly on one rock climb near the falls. I was thinking we could run on of the new trails that have opened up to us this year.

http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/qq138/steve_snelgrove/2009-Aug-1%20-%20Waiparous/IMGP1188.jpg

Its just before the falls and before the wide river crossing, you go up that steep two stage hill, around the corner and then there is a small hill of loose rock. That hill is now covered in deep snow that hides all the rock, except it lets you drop tires in since you can pick a line. it should be better now that we packed all the snow and exposed most of the rock.

Split your diff open like a grapefruit. Well, its not that bad, you just have to be careful and go slow, which makes it difficult if the rocks are loose and slippery. Skid plates are an asset if you go all out rock climbing.

The rocks in wiaprous arnt that bad, but snow has a habit of multiplying the difficulty factor.

Not sure if that is the same one or not. The one I "attempted" you had to dip into the creek, then up a steep slope.... then you could go either down through the creek to the falls or to the left up this ridge of loose rock.

I made it about 10 feet from the top before I got hung up on a rock on my rear dif, there was two other guys who made it up, but nobody else attempted it.

Some of the rock hills on the way there can be pretty hair raising because of the grades.... I am getting excited to get out there next weekend :)

Sounds like the same - I as right behind you and remember you getting hung up on that..

Isn't that path a little steep with the snow?

Same as driving through the water (Shhhh.... we never did that...) as some of those rocks were pretty big.

That was one of the reasons why I did the lift on the H3 as well. I plan on doing a small lift on the H2 as well if that is the one I have in the end...

The hill right before the falls right? Where it goes goes down, a bit flat and then up? That hill sucks right now since there are two rocks right in the trail.

10 and 15k straps are good, I think you guys only weight about 6,ooolbs right? Add in 50% weight for inclines or sticking resistance and you are still within the straps limit. If you really want, I think Greggs Distributors have straps as well.
