View Full Version : I Gotta Say...The 2010 Nissan Maxima is Magnificent.

Not sure if you've seen the thread about be being the 50-100 car pile up on Hwy. 2 a few weeks back, but I am in a rental car while insurance figures out if my 2002 Maxima is a write-off or not.

I was origianlly given a Hyndai Elantra as a rental because they had no other available cars. I kept calling back, and was finally able to slip into a comparable-class rental to my vehicle, and it turns out it was a 2010 Maxima straight off the lot, 300kms on the odometer.

I've always loved the Maxima, hence me purchasing a 2002 SE a few years back, and I am happy to say they have only gotten better. For some reason I'd just thought I'd throw this out there for any others interested in the car.

The CVT transmission has lots of power and its tiptronic (or whatever Nissan calls their version) manual shifting is smooth, but also agressive when needed. The seats are super comfortable, with the extending hamstring supports - which I love. This, combined with the telescopic streering makes it completely moldable to your preferences. The steering and handling is amazing; you find yourelf oversteering a ton until you get used to it, and its hard to feel any G's through a turn unless you're really givin' it.

It's a big car, but drives like a small car, they truly live up to their marketing scheme of "A 4-door Sports Car". It also has all of the features you would expect in a Maxima..even their famous heated steering wheel.

All of the interior controls are easy and intuitive to use. I haven't read any manuals but have been able to adjust and connect to everything I need (i.e. radio programming, climate controls, voice activated blue-tooth...etc). The push button start is a cool feature, and utilizing the correct settings, I haven't had to take my keys out of my pocket for days since it has the auto lock/unlock feature when the key is on your person.

Anyways, not sure if anyone else actually cares, but this is a stellar car, and as a Maxima fanboy, I'm glad to see they have only improved an already great car with an excellent heritage.

When I had the Hyndai rental, I couldn't wait for the insurance process to be over and get be back into my Maxima or have the cheque for a write off. But now...I'm in no hurry to give this beauty back.

My $0.02.

Nice write up, I really like the styling on the new Maxima, they have always been a car ahead of their time.

It is nice. The inside is much more luxurious than previous Nissans... though not QUITE up to Infiniti standards.

It is a great looking car - with one exception, IMO. I hated those headlights on the 370z, and I hate them on the Maxima too.

If it was up to Inifiniti's standards, wouldn't it just be an Inifiniti then? I guess they don't want to compete with themselves. :dunno:

I thought the same when I saw the pictures when the car was first released. But they have grown on me. I still do not like them on the 370z, but I really like the way they look on the Maxima now. They give the car a more agressive appearance, and along with the hood ridges, this car just looks bad ass. This is important becasue they are trying to intimate the Maxima's more agressive side, which it has always had, just maybe never displayed like this before. All win in my books. But everyone has their own preferences.

These pictures show the headlights a little more favourably:

Got a Murano rental last week and the CVT paired with the VQ did surprise me with power everywhere and smooth highway ride. Nice and smooth power. Interior is quite good for the segment.

That Sat Nav screen is one of more user friendly ones I have encountered.

Unfortunately, I think most will get a G37 instead of Maxima of the same price.

If I had the choice between getting a fully loaded Maxima vs fully loaded G37 and was on a budget, for sure the Maxima. You get more bang for buck, althought the engine isn't quite as powerful as the G37, it still makes up for in creature comforts. Also not sure if you drove the fully loaded one, but it has the dual sunroofs which is pretty neat. Overall its a pretty sweet car, especially in white with the black roof and tinted windows :bigpimp: and no I ain't saying this cuz I work at a Nissan dealer. A fully loaded one with nav/sat/tech and backup camera, was $37K whereas, fully loaded G37 was $43K without the dual sunroofs.

that one is white is sexy. What's the duel sunroof like? Full sunroof for back or tilt? I love my panoramic sunroof, it's hard to go back to a small sunroof now lol.

What?

A loaded Maxima is $45K including freight. You telling me that Nissan is giving a $8K discount on them?

Sorry thats my price for being employee. And the dual sunroofs, the front actually opens up and becomes a moon roof that opens/tilts and etc, but the rear passenger one, its enclosed but I guess see thru glass or the like.

G37 starts at $37,990 and Maxima starts at $39,450

Something is not right there. I can't see the base G37 being any less equipped than base Maxima :dunno:

THIS!

compare the two and you'll find the G37 is a better deal. Nissan definitely shot themselves in the foot on this one...

At 40K the Maxima makes absolutely no sense what so ever.

Ahh the new maximas ... Only 3.5 engines available, so you won't really be saving the planet, but not many care. Couple that with a nice cvt transmission and you get to 60m in some 6 seconds or less; overall a powerful, roomy, great looking car with quite a few luxury options.

I'm assuming the CVT plays the big role in that price figure. (Not sure on production costs, but I imagine its more)

But ya, its odd the G37's price is so competitive to nissan americas flagship sedan.

difficult to comprehend that pricing.

The Maxima used to be a good seller for Nissan but now it's a dying car and ironically most of the lost sales have gone to the G35/37.

My aunt is a bigwig for the education department. Since the early 90's she's always bough Maximas with her car allowance. A new one every three years for over a decade. Now she drives a G37.

I honestly can't see the logic in buying one. If you want a Nissan in that price range you would have to be an idiot to by the Maxima over the G37.

Exactly...at that price point why would people buy a maxima over a g37. Pricing completely messed up. Nissan screwed up big time.

Yes CVT is part of the reason why its priced more. Also, most people when going to the G37 choose the AWD model so that ups the price to $41,300. Fully loaded Maxima $45,560. Fully loaded G37x $50,565. Also, not sure if its been released yet, but insider news was Nissan was gonna put the CVT transmission warranty up to 200,000KM.

And no I'm not pro Nissan or etc, as I work for a dual Infiniti/Nissan dealer. Personally I'd go for a G37 also.

lol are you fucking serious? go sit in one before calling me out... see how comfortable you are in those back seats... the G37s back seats are USELESS, mightaswell go for the 370z. I was about to take my wallet out and buy one last year, until i sat in that rear seat. totally useless.

I sat in the back of a G37 once, and fell asleep the seats were so comfortable. True story.

Aleks

I do agree that G35/G37 sedan is a very narrow car inside and there isn't much room back there for your legs or head if you're anywhere near 6' tall. 3 series is a lot more comfortable in the back. However IMO all these cars (G37, C class, 3 series, A4, and especially IS250/350) are not meant to have adults in the back for any period of time.

I agree if you described a G37 coupe. A G37 sedan, no way.

The only difference between Maxima and G37 sedan is the middle back seat. It's narrower in the G37 and the drive shaft hump is bigger making G37 are more of a 4 seater.

I think I realize what's going on. The sedan was G35 until this year. Probably that's what stucked in InRich's head.

I'd love to take one for a spin.

I agree with what most people are saying. While the Maxima is "truly magnifcent" (in my own words), for the same price or lower, the Infiniti would probably be better.

I think the reason someone would buy the Maxima is because of the extra space, as pointed out already. And, without any facts to back it up, it seems as though the Maxima might have more truck space, which is also handy in a family situation. We bought our original Maxima becasue we had started a family, and wanted a strong car that was functional and practical for all the stuff you need to carry around when you have kids (those without kids would most likely underestimate how much room you really do need), as well as have some nice style, class, and preformance to it. Our original Maxima (RIP) was a great choice for all of those reasons. A Maxima is a family's Inifiniti.

So, when I was able to rent one while insurance sorted out my 50-car pile up fiasco, I was thoroughly impressed.

Altima is like the Civic, Maxima is like the Accord. Gotta have a model to appease the lower end sedan buyers.

Actually Altima is an Accord and Camry competitor. Originally it was an in-between compact and mid-size car but they made it bigger and gave it the V6 so it's really more of a mid-size car and another reason in addition to the G35/37 that the Maxima is kind of a pointless car. Altima is a big seller for Nissan.

Pre 2002, it was Sentra (sub-compact), Altima (compact), Maxima (mid-size).

Now it's Versa (sub-compact), Sentra (compact), Altima (mid-size), Maxima (full-size).

Maxima would be in the same class as Avalon.

G35/37 would have been a better car for me. Smaller and RWD so you can whip it around easier. I miss being able to do quick u-turns w/o having a tug boat.

Always compared Corolla to the Civic
