PS3 will only read data off a FAT32 formatted external HDD. Most of the movies (DVD/BR-ripped) are 4GB+ in size, BUT FAT32 file system can not accept any file greater than 4GB.

So how will one make this work?

If you have the option of plugging in the external drive into a computer on your local network take a look at the PS3 media server application. It let's you stream pretty any media file, even if the file isn't natively supported by the ps3 thanks to it's transcoding capabilities.

I've been using it for the past 4 months and so far it's been treating me well.

The transcoding is performed within the computer, then the transcoded data is sent off to PS3 for display right?

I was using the PS3 Media Server to transcode some rmvb videos, the video and the audio do not sync together.

There are a few choices for uPnP servers for both Mac and Pcs. When it's all said and done it's easiest to download movies specifically ripped for the PS3 that are exactly 4.0 GB and AAC sound so no conversion or streaming is necessary. Just search 'PS3' on Piratebay or other sites and you will find lots of these HD movies.

Is there anyway for a PC to read PS3's HDD?

The PS3 can read any folder I made sharing for the PC. But I can't do it vise-versa.

You can format big drives to fat32 with this program.

i formatted my boss's 500 gig with this program so he could watch movies on his xbox. Works great.

^ yep. but the problem is that the file size is still limited to 4gb.

(by the way, I split my BD movies into smaller pieces to bypass that problem)
