Had some AWD and RWD fun tonight. Fucking hard to take pics when it's -25 out though... SO COLD. My hands were shaking quite a bit, so I'm sorry about the blurriness. Not my most creative shots, but it was a fun night.

Steve, those moon shots are so awesome. I'm going to have to do some research to figure out how I could get my moon shots to come out even HALF as decent as that. The detail is ridiculous!

Been trying to use my new DSLR as much as possible to get more comfortable with it, so nothing terribly interesting. Freezing my ass off the past few days in the process as well..

thanks :D
one of the few times I've wished I had a crop body still :P

I really like the third one, but I hate the lighting in the yards, lol. Might work better using two different white balances in post process just to get rid of the yellow of the snow and building. Leave the sky and inside lights with the same white balance...just an idea.
Even just doing the white balance for the outside might give you a cool result...

strange...I was compensated for my time. Maybe go back and read my post in your thread about how you think you should be making more money as a photographer as it relates to appearances and what not. It might help you get a better understanding of the true underlying issue here.

I was treated with the utmost respect from the moment I showed up. I was repeatedly asked if there was anything at all I needed, wether it be a drink, or the car to be moved or anything at all. I'm quite certain that if I had said I needed a bikini model to make the car look better I could have got one delivered. When I was done the only question I got was when might I be able to see the images. I gave a time frame and we went on our separate ways.

Just stating the facts chief. I was paid.
You trying to make it look like the shop somehow wronged you is downright disrespectful. There's more I could say but I won't, instead I'll just say you stood to make some good connections when you were invited to be a photographer there...everything that happened after the invite can only be blamed on you.

I wasn't complaining about it, I tried posting a picture that I thought was MEH and it didn't attach to my post. Please show me where I was insulting and/or criticising you?

As far as my shoot at the 'spa' it was a done and over situation where miscommunication was laid. Do you even know exactly what happened? No you don't because you weren't INVOLVED. Do you hear mistruths, accusations and insinuations regarding my participation in that matter? Of course you do because there is 2 sides to every story, and you're only getting one but not that it matters you could give a shit anyways.

And no, it may not be blamed on me. If you HIRE somebody to do WORK for you, you inform them of it before they even leave their house. You do not allow them to go under the pretense that it is a favor. You do not go to them after they spend 7 hours editing photos from that shoot and tell them they were hired, and that they had no right to post the photos on a forum before they overlooked the shots and picked which ones they wanted.

Again, keep out of my business and quit trying to create drama here, I'm fucking sick of it already

Thanks to one of you guy's helpful tip to use a second curtain flash I finally got to give it a try. It truly has made me realize that a proper speedlight would be one of the best next investments I can make. The problem is that I am a complete photo newb, and have no idea what to look out for specifically in a speedlight. Other than being able to position and use bounce flash, what else is important? Also, how are you guys resizing and resharpening for web output? I just switched from CS2 to CS4, and the Bicubic redu/sharpen is making everything look awful compared to my older version for whatever reason.. Thanks for any help photo people, even you competitive evil bastards.

Blitz: are you just scanning your negatives? or are you scanning the prints from your B&W film?

Maybe it's just me but I scanned some B&W prints I did on my CanoScan LiDE60 and they sucked ass...streaks all over the place when the print is flawless (imo).

Since the coldsnap is FINALLY over, I can go out again and take shots. I don't wanna lug around my gear while in classes so I got a fresh battery for this bad boy and tomorrow, I'm starting my 'picture everyday till I die' project:

I call it "89."

I bought a plustech dedicated negative scanner a few months back, it's been working really well, only about $150 from B&H photo too. I picked up a good flat bed scanner on boxing day, but haven't tried it yet so can't comment on how prints scan on it.

AE-1 for $75 is ok. Shouldn't be too hard to find one cheaper on ebay though. FD lenses are fairly common and cheap too.

99% likely that it is a UV filter, and not a polarizing filter. I also was using one for "protection" for a little while, until I noticed the horrid flaring it was causing in many of my photos.

Example:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c59/handsomebassman/uvfiltproblem.jpg

See the red spot that looks like an alien planet peering through the sky? Take off the UV filter and it magically disappears. Any pros here have any tips on when is the best time to use a UV filter and its purposes?

Actually that WAS the question..

Polly, D90's and up have an "active dynamic lighting" feature that makes it easier to get a more even exposure in broad lighting conditions.. As well as it depends on where the sun was in the shot to get a vivid sky like that..

Also, get a better quality filter if you're getting flaring like that.. Hoya makes some nice filters - their pro-1 digital line is very good.. you can get protection filters for cheaper than UV's, as you don't get a big difference using UV filters anyways.. might as well have something crystal clear..

not really...the results from a polarizing filter are still straight out of camera.

... are you missing the "or is it photoshopped" part?

When he said 'or any shopping' - that meant "photo shopping"

I believe technically it was neither as we haven't figured out if he has a polariser or not.. I'm going with not, as it isn't a "first" filter for beginners - usually UV/Sky or protectors are firsts..

But first, here's a picture of me with Ted Grant. If you're into photojournalism at all, you should be familiar with him...what a guy.
