Read in the other thread they haev now opened up the sata port.

Will a usb esata external work for this when the usb cable is attached to a USB->eSATA adapter?

just use the firewire port. been working for years. i have a 6412 not sure it has a sata.

Yes it will work, though your looking at $250 for a pre built drive with Esata + the cable. Its cheaper to build one...

I would use firewire but I believe this port is disabled by shaw on the motorola box, correct?

It works just fine as an output but no I doesn't work to hook up your drive to the PVR. If you buy a non Shaw branded drive make sure you check to see if the drive is compatible with the DCT since not all of them play nice with the PVR especially the ones with power saving modes et al.
