Go here:
https://services.google.com/fb/forms/googlevoiceinvite/
As far as I know google are the only ones giving out invites at this point, but it is also worth mentioning that only US users are "allowed", so if you get on the service you will not have a local number. I do not know the details of how they prevent canadians from using the service so it may or may not be possible to even gain access. Here is an article that outlines some of the process:

i have done my research, google has said that they give users invites occasionally for thier frinds/family... also i have spoken with a few people who have 403 numbers on there, it's the only canadian area code available on it.

Well that is more information than I can find, why don't you share with us when you find out more?

I would be interested in a google voice invite :)

ok.. I'm able to sign in. Got my cell (a 403 number) registered. Did the 2-digit code activation thing. The problem is my carrier (Fido) is not supported. In fact, I don't see any Canadian carrier being supported. I tried using AT&T as carrier, and it give you a code to enter into your phone which forwards your missed calls to a US number.

So, unless your phone plan has unlimited North America calls (which I don't), I don't see how you can really use that part of Google Voice in Canada. I haven't tried setting up their other services yet.

Playing around with it a bit more... They don't offer any 403 google numbers as far as I can see.

Although I haven't tried myself, but I should probably be able to do all that now.

What I'm saying is, you can't get a 403 GV number. If you want to setup a GV number for people to call you at, it would be a US number, not a 403 number.

or am I understanding you incorrectly?

nope, there are (were?) 403 numbers available for Gv with softphone from your PC, just basically like a voip provider.

I see. Well, as long as I remember to check the site, I'll keep trying to get a 403 number. And once I do, I'll let you guys know. :)
