Meh, for me it’s impossible. Too many great bands/artists in too many genres for everyone to be an expert in. I'll make it simple and stick to metal. Here is my top 10 perfect albums off the top of my head. (i could spend one week thinking of a better list but i won't try). My criteria is, pretty much every single song on the album has to be good/amazing. Some albums have classic, memorable tracks but too many of the other songs are mediocre so they didn't make the cut. The entire album has to flow with an over all mood.

Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime
Rhapsody - Dawn of Victory
Kamelot - Fourth Legacy
Falconer - Falconer
Wuthering Heights - Far From The Madding Crowd
Bruce Dickinson - Chemical Wedding
Hollenthon - With Vilest Of Worms To Dwell
Iron Maiden - Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Metalica - Black Album

I don't listen to much variety other than Hip-Hop/Rap but I'd say Michael Jackson's Thriller is up there in general.

On the Hip Hop/Rap side, here are my Top 10:

09 - Run DMC - Raising Hell
08 - Biggy - Ready To Die
07 - Outkast- ATLiens
06 - Dr. Dre - The Chronic
05 - N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton
04 - Snoop Doggy Dogg - Doggy Style
03 - Tribe Called Quest - Low End Theory
02 - Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wutang: 36 Chambers

and IMO, the best album of all time.

All that's missing is In Rainbows.

I'm surprised at the lack of presence (aside from the OP's one mention) of The Beatles in this thread, let alone some other notably absent classics.

I like pretty much everything by The Beatles, but no particular album stands out start-to-finish for me to put it in a spot. I guess I certainly could put Abbey Road in there though...

Best list so far. Finally someone who knows what music is about.

I personally think that 95% of the people on this forum have never actually listened to Elvis other then from a tv show or a commercial.

That's a pretty good list. In particular the ones I left in bold above would be on my list. Of course we're all going to be tainted by our own biases. (eg. I'm not a big Zeppelin fan).

However one solid album your list is missing is GNR - Appetite For Destruction.

No mention of Grade's 'Under the Radar' or Boy Sets Fire's 'After the Eulogy'....???

My top ten:

Beatles - Sgt. Peppers - the best of the best
Led Zepplin - IV - the most influential Rock n Roll album
The Who - Who's Next - true musicianship
Pearl Jam - Ten - the best 'alternative' record that shaped 2 decades of rock (though Nevermind could be well argued)
Michael Jackson - Thriller - a pop masterpiece
Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come - the most prolific 'punk' album ever recorded
Strung Out - Twisted by Design - my personal fave (though in a less biased list, GnR's Appetite would be here)
Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run - a multi-generational, anthemic album
The Clash - London Calling - the voice of a rebelling generation - it set the tone for the 80s
Sugar Hill Gang - Rapper's Delight (single) - the start of a new musical genre

Some of these lists make me laugh when all of the 'top 10 greatest albums ever' listed were all produced in the last 10 years... hahaha.

In case you didn't notice, most of the music produced after the mid-90s is manufactured crap. Very little real raw talent showcased these days... it's sad.

I was trying to hard not to make fun of some peoples lists but since you touched upon what I was going to say...

Lil Wayne??? Kanye? Kid Cudi? Really??? Blueprint 3? The Game??? Besides Kanye all these artists/albums are hot garbage, manufactured pop bullshit.
-I leave Kanye out because he is talented and his first 3 albums are tight, but I wouldnt put them in the top albums ever made. I can name 50 hip hop albums alone that deserve higher billing than anything Kanye has put out.
-Kid Cudi album is cool, but i wouldnt put his hipster rap bs in the top 10.
-The Game is just funny to me, old butterfly tattoo, change of heart, gay rappin ass muthafucka. Dude would be nowhere if it wasnt for Dre and 50 Cent. His career is OVER.
-Lil Wayne is hot garbage. He is pop raps poster boy of the moment. A few years from now he will be mentioned alongside, Ja Rule, Smiles and Southstar, and Skeelo under "where are they now". Either that or he will be on Celebrity Rehab trying to over come his codeine addiction.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say a vast majority of these posters grew up with this "manufactured crap". Not saying that every Beatles, Stones, other old school band fan is likely to be a geezer... Just saying, can't really blame people for holding music of their respective eras in high regard.

Anyways my list is as follows and in no order of importance:

Hendrix: Electric Ladyland
U2: Achtung Baby
Oasis: Definitely Maybe
Fugees: the Score
The Stone Roses : "the stone roses"
Carlos Santana: Santana III
The Verve: Urban Hymns
Beatles: Let it Be
Rolling Stones: Beggar's Banquet
Aerosmith: Toys in the Attic

Tough to make a list like this. Especially trying to make one cross genre.

1. Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon
2. Pink Floyd - Animals
3. The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds (those harmonies...and God Only Knows is the most beautiful song ever recorded)
4. The Beatles - Rubber Soul
5. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
6. Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde
7. David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
8. King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
9. Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy
10. The Beatles - Revolver

What, no Grateful Dead albums on a Deadhead's top 10 album list? Nope. If I included live shows there would be a few there, but I kept the list to studio only.
