I was wondering what the best type of box would be for a set of 12" type r's?

some has to do with the type of sound you are going for. You want a tighter bass sound, or louder more loose sound (sealed vs ported)

hey my guess would probably be the ported box's made by Alpine for the type R's: they are made exactly to spec for that sub, so you will get the best preformance out of them!

for tight bass you want sealed. You've gotta look at the volume of the box as well and construct it out of atleast 5/8" mdf and brace the hell out of it.

Bracing can be lots of things like angled pieces of MDF screwed between sides or fiberglassed in. Pieces of MDF across the box. Basically, anything to prevent the box walls from flexing in and out. Just remember to account for the bracing when finding teh box volume.

I dont think the Type R generates enough compression for him to brace it like a mother. I would say anywhere around 2 cuF after displacement, and you'll be fine. You can still get tight bass if you tune a ported box low, like 28hz low.

I brace every box I build although you're right that if you're using 3/4" MDF on smaller boxes it may be unncessary.

I agree - sealed enclosures generally give the tightest, punchiest bass - with a minimum of bass "overhang". Most ported or bandpass enclsures seem to give a highly resonant bass that has the FAT reggae / rasta quality. Sealed enclosures generally don't go as deep as the others, and can be 6 - 9 dB less efficient than the others. Hope this helps.
