View Full Version : Is this surface rust and how to temporarily fix?

I was filling up my car and while I was putting the gas cap back in, I noticed a small area, the size of a dime, maybe 2-3 inches left of the nozzle hole, where it looks to be like surface rust. I went to get a napkin and started to clean it off thinking it was residue or something but it didn't come off.

Again, it's the size of a dime, and seems to have some white specs mixed into the brown. Is this what you call surface rust? I've learned to assume that "rust" is metal that's been eaten right through or at least can crumble away when you touch it.

Just wondering what I can do temporarily to fix this up since I plan to get all the needed bodywork done in the summertime when my car gets repainted..

I find this strange that rust can appear in this area since these areas are painted so there isn't any exposed metal.

In terms of products I could use, where could I pick this stuff up if I need to?

Thanks
