View Full Version : Women's hockey team parties too hard for IOC

I for one wouldn't hesitate to strip them all of their medals and put Poulin in jail. This type of behavior is unacceptable for hockey players who just won a gold medal.

Canadian team stages on-ice celebration after gold, raising eyebrows of IOC

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — The women of the Canadian hockey team politely accepted their gold medals and waved to an adoring crowd. And then the real celebration began.

More than half an hour after they beat the United States 2-0 on Thursday, the players came back from the locker room and staged a party on ice — swigging from bottles of champagne, guzzling beer and smoking cigars.

...

The celebration raised eyebrows at the IOC, which said it would look into the matter. Informed of the antics by The Associated Press, Gilbert Felli, the IOC's executive director of the Olympic Games, said it was "not what we want to see."

"I don't think it's a good promotion of sport values," he said. "If they celebrate in the changing room, that's one thing, but not in public. We will investigate what happened."

Now I have to get out to our very own Sin City and join these reprobates in cheering on the men, who I hope show dignity and class in their post-game celebrations should they win.

Steve Keough, a spokesman for the Canadian Olympic Committee, said the COC had not provided the alcohol nor initiated the party.

"In terms of the actual celebration, it's not exactly something uncommon in Canada," he said.

Nothing to see here, move along.

strip them of medals and throw them in jail? for doing something that is completely legal? you're fucken retarded. it's not like they were doing porn on the ice or something...

sure, they should've used a little more sense in their celebration, but i think the rivalry between the womens teams totally eclipse the rivalry between the US and Canada mens teams. these chicks hate each other.

after beating your enemies, damn straight you're gonna celebrate. they should've just kept it in the locker room.

Strip them of their medals and then what? give them to the USA who already knows they lost? I for one wouldn't want to win a gold medal in a sport like hockey, where I know I was beaten for the gold in a fair game.:bullshit:

The Canadian women played hard, so I have no problem with them partying hard. And apparently, Canadians have a penchant for partying hard and well. Montgomery, for his gold, chugged half a jug of beer on national (nay, INTERNATIONAL) TV and didn't even get a slap on the wrist. Did the IOC come down on him? Nope.

Unfortunately, the legal drinking age in Vancouver/BC is 19. There were 18 year olds drinking there in public, which is why there's complaints.

ESPN said there was only one team member under 19 and it wasnt clear if she was drinking or not.

As rage mentioned, I think most of the beef is coming from the fact that one person in the roster is below the age limit.

Also, Montgomery did it outside and not in the hockey rink. The IOC wants to respect the games, which is understandable.

Strip them of the gold? Hm, a bit harsh.

Considering the IOC is thinking of scrapping womens hockey because its unfair to other teams to have the USA and Canada as the two best teams, I don't too much stock in what they say about the sport.

Beyond group buy on new sarcasm detectors...there seems to be a lot of broken ones around here.

I don't see why the IOC gives a rats ass about this. The story I heard on the news this morning is that the girls came back out on the ice after the rink was empty...all the fans gone. It's not like they were doing this in front of a bunch of kids or something.

I also have confirmed that I am Canadian this morning. I see a picture of cute chick who plays hockey, wins olympic gold & has a cigar in her mouth and a beer in her hands...that looks pretty damn sexy to me.

Only in north america they would bitch and complain about something so stupid.

Only in North america would they complain about drinking and nudity in public. In europe this is natural and not a big deal. Yet here in canada violence is an everyday thing on TV and in real life.

People forget that these women worked their ass off all year round for this and deserve to just relax and take it all in.

What the fuck is the IOC's problem? They just won gold. Why can't they have their moment? Did they expect the women's team to gracefully accept their medals, then go back to their single oven heated homes and churn butter in the kitchen?

If they did it right in front of the fans, maybe I might have a slight problem with it. But when everyone's gone from the rink already, what's the big deal?

I figured out what the IOC is so mad...

The beer, champagne and cigars were not from an official sponsor.

If they celebrated after the arena was emptied out, then I'm all for it!

Pulling out the Dom Perignon when there's kids watching is a bit influential but hey, if it's empty it's like a locker room.

WHOA! Since when did Molson come out with a champagne-sized beer bottle:

YOU GO GIRLS! I would have loved to be there with them. I'm sure some stuff went down in the locker room :poosie:

And believe it or not I think its good for Canada. The whole world thinks of us as pushovers when it comes to sports.

When you work hard to reach a goal you should be able to celebrate any way you see fit. Champagne and cigars... who cares. It's not like they stripped down and started doing rails of coke off each others stomaches.... that's how you really celebrate

My only question would be what the fuck they were celebrating? This is a joke of an event....their overall score was 48-2 - Not really a competition if you ask me.

<rant about the shit the Americans pulled in '02 removed before posting :)>

By the way, as far as men's hockey goes, the Canadian team -in the first Winter Olympic hockey tournament- outscored their opponents 110-3. I guess they should have dropped hockey from the schedule at that point:dunno:

I think his point is, why are you celebrating so hard when they were pretty much expected to dominate the games. He wasn't talking about removing the sport from the games.

Good for them. OP has obviously never won any type of sporting event, or a national or international title for that matter. Locker room celebration after Stanley Cup/Grey Cup/Super bowl/World Series/NBA champioship/NLL Championship would blow most fans' minds. Neked Beer/champagne showers for all

Really? You think they paid for it? Do you think they care? Molson gave them the beer, if I handed you a beer for free would you bitch and complain? If you did I'd take it back and tell you to go fuck yourself. Who cares what they are drinking, they're celebrating as they should, and good for them. They won a gold medal, so fucking support them, who gives 2 fucks about what brand of beer there drinking. (minus Molson)

Don't get me wrong, I hate coors light, not cause its a light beer, but fuck makes me piss out my ass worst then mountain crest...now coors original, thats a fucking beer.

Her grandfather undoubtedly enjoyed the same stuff when he won the Cup

As for the beer, so long as its cold, any beer after a win tastes delicious. When its free from a loyal sponsor, it tastes even better.
