For anyone who has travelled to the USA lately by airplane, is the small roller luggage still allowed on as a carry-on item?

I've checked all the airline websites and it says it is, just the second personal item allowed is smaller now. Like no backpack allowed, just a purse or laptop bag. Is this true?
I was told by somebody that airlines with flights to the states just aren't allowing anything on now except the purse or laptop bag.

I just got back. A small roller luggage piece is fine for a carry-on - in addition to a personal item like a camera bag or purse etc.

They weren't allowing any carry-on luggage for a while there but that's not the case anymore.

Just got back last week. They are pretty strict about the size at security now. Make sure it fits inside of the measuing boxes at check-in. I had to re-check my bag and go through security again because my garment bag was 2 inches to tall.
