Things have definitely been picking up, business' are just cautious right now with hiring. If the market slows a bit again or whatever they don't want to have to lay off a ton of new hires, rather just be slightly understaffed for now. At least that is the feel I have gotten from other business owners I've spoken to.

This. Most places are slow to hire, just because of the economic melt down that we're recovering from.
Yes work HAS picked up, but they're leary about bringing new guys on just yet. Perhaps in a couple months things will have picked up, but right now its very slow.

ya it's sad out there right now. Companies have their pick right now. Why hire a brand new journeyman with limited skills (I've only worked the one place) when they can hire someone with those specific skills and 3-5 yrs exp.

It's so much harder with a family to support and a rediculous mortgage (I moved in like a month before the recession LOL)

Yeah, it's still pretty quiet around the city. I sell welding equipment, consumables & industrial gases and although we are still doing alright, a lot of our regulars are still out of work or just getting odds & ends.

THIS! I just decided to get out of millwright because of this and I work now as a labourer with Finning. I plan to stick around with them until I get and finish a JM heavy equip ticket. This might take a while as we all know its slow, even if your internal right now, but when it gets busy again things will surely turn around.

Yes Finning does hire welders I think they have a few spots now but they are looking for JM, however the best way to get a trade from them is to start as a labourer, at least then your internal, and also even in event of a layoff (there was none here in the north but still) they keep you on callback list so you keep your senoirity, and get a job back. We have a few guys from reddeer and edmonton here right now as well as calgary, they plan to return to their branches when things pick up but hey its a paying job at the moment (this is because its in fort mcmurray so they probally arent interested in staying up here long term) Try Foremost as well in Calgary my friend is a 3rd year machinist there and he said they have hired back just about all their layoff people and should be looking for some new by summer!
