View Full Version : A&A Mediterranean deli - BEST DONAIRS IN TOWN

I cant say enough about this place aside from them having the tastiest donairs and shawarmas in town. Ive been to many donair places but this one tops them all EASILY. It says in bold on their menu "serving the tastiest" and trust me lives up to their promise! Most donair places ive been to in this city i found their meat to be dry and overcooked and their toppings are stale, not this place. Their meat is super juicy, super fresh veggies and their sauces arent watered down like other places.

They have two locations, (dont know the exact addy of the 20th Ave SW one sorry) but I go to the one on 6th Ave and Macleod Tr S...just on the other side of the block of Rocky Mountain plaza building. Ran by very friendly family and they load up your donairs with so much meat its awesome. You can tell they truly appreciate the business they get.

I usually get their medium which is $8.50, about 9'' but they pack it so much its well worth it. They also have the large size which is 13" for $11.50. All their prices include tax already.

If youre nearby or love donairs give this place is a MUST TRY, as far as im concerned no one in the city even comes close to this place.

i have to say, i don't like Jimmy's A&A.

heres a best Donair thread.

http://forums.beyond.ca/st/218147/best-donairs-lets-have-em-/

Jimmy's was mentioned a few times

but here's what i have to say, the shit is so huge that you cant even hold it. You basically need a fork.

i guess thats good for some but i like to hold my donair and eat it ahah.

the meat isn't even that good compared to other places too IMO

They aren't as good as they used to be. When it was Jimmy behind the counter with his mom and sister (I think that's who they were), that placed rocked, now it's bunch of pimple faced SAIT students picking their noses and yelling at each other.

Good on him for building up his business, but it isn't the same, and the quality is half what it was.

I much prefer Cedar's these days.

Ive had Jimmys and they were good but not that great - like you said their meat wasnt that good. A&A med deli by far has the juiciest meat, you wont find a place with better donair meat in the city. Plus its huge. The large 13'' took me about 20mins to eat last time.

I went there last week, really enjoyed it. I have to still say best donair in town. The trick is combining donair with the schwarma.

Im guessing the pimple faced SAIT students are at the other location cause the one on 6th Ave is ran by the son and daughter of the family. Theyre very clean in going about making your food.

Ya give it a try, i honestly cant see how anyone wont like their donairs. Huge quantity and huge quality, usually you get one or the other.

The rest of the fast food sandwich/pita places should take a hint from this place in whats reasonable quantity in giving your customers. *cough cough* Pita express* im looking at you.

I read the other donair thread and someone brought up Amin Donair on 7th...ive been there, years ago. If I recall correctly its inside a smoke shop? The guy there is nice, he will only sell to you if you can finish it. THe donairs are the size of your moms purse but the meat isnt the best quality. That one you NEED a fork and knife to eat its so big ha.

Jimmy's is pretty good, although I agree with other posters that it used to be better back in the early 2000s. the sandwiches are way too large (mostly because they are 50% shredded iceburg lettuce), the prices are a too high IMO.

i should also point the difference between beef schwarmas and donairs. JImmy's does NOT serve donairs (which are greek-canadian from halifax), they serve schwarmas (which are lebanese, like Jimmy). 'authentic' halifax donairs have spiced beef, onions and tomatoes, slathered in a very, very thick and sweet sauce made3 from sugar and evaporated mile. jimmy's schwarmas, on the other hand, have shredded lettuce, hot peppers, pickles and tomatoes. they use a garlic sauce which is far less sweet than you would find on a donair.

I do like a good schwarma, but IMO the schwarmas at Tazza are FAR superior to Jimmy's. they us parsley instead of shredded iceburg lettuce, better quality ingredients in general, and the family that runs it is far more professional than the goofs you often see at Jimmy's.

you can find more traditional halifax donairs at My Donair (several locations are the city) and Uncle Moe's Donair (although i find this place really gross and dirty, and the service sucks as you can see here http://forums.beyond.ca/showthread.php?threadid=285843)

Went to Jimmy's a couple of years ago with a friend. By far the worst thing ive ever had to eat. On top of it all, the buddy paid for the "large", which i had no clue how big it was and when it came time to eating it i had to down the whole thing as i didnt wanna throw his money down the drain.

Whatever it was that made that donair/shwarma sweet was absolutely gross. Ive never been back, nor will i ever recommend it to anyone.

They usually put sweet sauce on the donair so that might be what you didn't like. And your second statement makes it sound like your complaining about getting good value for money.

Actually I was talking to the girl the otehr day about their meat and they basically roast their meat in sweet sauce - exactly like you said, evaporated milk and sugar. Thats how they get it so juicy.

Theyve never made my donairs half lettuce lol, if anything its half meat lol and the rest toppings. I hate the places that cheap out and most of them use lettuce cause its cheap but not this place.

Like I said ive never been to the 20th ave location but they must be complete opposites cause the bro and sis on 6th ave location are very professional and friendly.

The prices are good IMO, considering the portions you get. Unlike majority of fast food chains who charge you the same but give you one thin slice of meat and the rest lettuce and bread lol :thumbsdow

That makes sense then, wish i would of been told ahead of time what was savoury and what was sweet. Would of prob made it taste much better.

As for the second comment, i didnt complain about the value for the price. I thought it was more then fair. The thing was the size of a medium pizza folded in half lol. It's just the fact that the friend paid for it and i didnt wanna be a dick and just throw the thing out within have 2 bites.

don't worry, the novelty will fade with time. wait till you get some meat from the bottom of the steam table. nothing like 3/4 cup of chicken grease dripping down your face and arm.

I've never had a bad experience at any of the A&A places.

The past few times I have gone Jimmy is always there (Usually a Saturday). Jimmy reminds me of a Vegas type magican act or something. He sort of creeped me out the first time I met him. I figure he should start wearing a cape.

I used to really like that place too, but the last few times I have eaten there, my stomach feels really weird after and I won't expand on that. I also find the talking etc. behind the counter awkward as the people who work there are usually quite strange. I wouldn't recommend it anymore to anyone. I used to eat a Babylon Foods on 28 Street NE, but I haven't been there forever either. I might try this Cedar's one day, because a good donair is nice once in awhile.

I was reading this thread yesterday and it really made me crave a donair.... So I went to Jimmy's to pick one up.

I have to say, I think the quality of the food @ Jimmy's has gone downhill in recent times. The donair just wasn't as good as I remember it being in the past (meat was very greasy, shitty vegetables, and not much sauce). Also, after I ate it I felt kind of sick and greasy.

I should also add that one time when I went there last year, I asked for a light amount of hot sauce (but no banana peppers). Went home to eat it and not only did it have a copious amount of hot sauce, it also had banana peppers on it, pretty much ruining the donair for me......

Not sure how hard it is to get such a simple order so wrong, but I think in the future I will be checking out one of the other places listed.

I have been to Tazzas in Bridgeland and it was definitely much better quality meat.

Cheers

Unless I am blind, I saw nobody mention The Chick Pea, down on 8th ave and 7st SW by Ceili's.

I am pretty new to the donair scene, and have only been to a few places, but so far The Chick Pea is my favourite.

I was just at A&A and Jimmie was there, he asked if the kids want any samples so I said that would be great because my daughter is a picky eater. When he heard that he invited her to the other side of the counter and gave her a sample of anything she wanted, then he custom made her a pita.
Over all food and service was great.
