For a first attempt it really isn't bad. #2 isn't great though, the main part of the photo (the upright girl) is blurry with an unflattering facial expression and the girl who's in focus looks dead. No conection with the camera whatsoever. #3 is my favorite of the bunch with #7 being second I think

thanks. I know the last is blown out too, but for some reason I really liked it.

Yep, it works. Sometimes the rules are meant to be broken.

I replaced that pic #2
the models were fun to work with, had a good time, was both of their first times at this as well.

i'm no pro by a long shot, but if I could suggest that the models use some more opaque make up, there is a huge amount of reflection coming from their faces .

This is not a comment on the model but, the one in dark clothes looks really tired and almost like she does not want to be there.

I realize that you cant help things like that but, maybe a little booze or some fun one on one would help the next shoot?

Oh come on, we can't comment on the models? Can I just say this: one of them is drop dead gorgeous.

well both the models and myself being new to photography, this their first shoot, and my first glamor shoot. not to mention 6 months ago I had never even picked up a dslr
I look forward to some vast improvements

Would a polarizer help with the reflections on the faces?

That's where a good professional make up artists come in. There is make up specifically designed for photographic models.

Why is it you choose to threaten us with this? do you think there is something wrong with these girls?

they are people too and don't need you insinuating there is something wrong with how they look.

No, there is nothing wrong with the girls. Personally, I think they look great!

The warning is put up because those are the rules, and lots of people don't read the rules, so they critique the models as opposed to critiquing the pictures as requested. If I was a female model, i'd rather see that warning rather than be self conscious of myself from comments that idiots post. People come in all shapes/colors/sizes, but the media and the internet have blown out what a person should think about others appearances...

Back on topic, the shots look great, wish I had the eye to capture human models. I can barely capture good pics of cars. :nut:

gotta love the preemptive strike giving away her opinion :poosie: personally I could stand to lose a point or two off my user rating...but I'm trying this being nice thing out...

not a bad first attempt gord. if you moved her further from the backdrop in the last one it would be the best of the bunch in my opinion...

Cut 6, she's got a pole growing out of her head, recrop 1 to get rid of the top of your "background", and lose the playboy sheets in all of them(no matter what anyone says, playboy is not classy). And they're underexposed(with the exception of the last one). I don't click links, so I commented on what was posted :P

My second post today of trying to be helpful...I feel dirty :(

yeah she definitely thinks these girls are unattractive that's why she said that.

personally, I wouldn't comment on it.

Thanks steve, I did ask them prior to me going to shoot that they use some solid color sheets, but I worked with what I got.

the funny part is the last pic was just a shot taken during testing the lighting

like I said the 12 images I felt were best have yet to be touched. I have to remove a tripod leg and a things like that in them

it's better to wait for the best ones before posting than post the ones you can have done quickly. Always post the best, because 90% of people will never click the link unless you wow them with the ones you do post.

:werd: what does the rule enforcing imply lol

the lighting looks hard on pic #5, esp. from her hair

what kind of lighting are you using? a small light/flash from the left?

Good effort, I dig some of the shots.

Critique:
-Photo #1's upper right-hand corner is full of distracting clutter.
-The pose. There isn't much reason to nit pick here saying that both you and the models havn't been doing this all your lives, but some of the poses look awkward.
-I don't know what you are using for lighting or if its just the makeup/complexion, but you could easily fix most of that shine in PP with a low opacity clone tool.

Final thoughts: Rebel Represent Yo

Oh bugger off guys. After certain members of this forum decided to photoshop penises and other terrible things onto a local car show model a few years ago, this forum has a zero tolerance policy on negative comments towards amateur models, be they car show or any other kind. We usually post some warning of this nature in every thread featuring amateur models.

so I took a stab at touching a few of them up...a few minutes for each shot...if you're unhappy with the edits let me know Gord and I will take them down.

Nothing here that a basic knowledge of photoshop couldn't do...all working from the jpegs posted. Basically...crops, exposure, levels adjustments, skin smoothing, couple of marks on the skin, touched up the eyes, a few other little touches. No topaz filters necessary.

I thought about making the background just clip to white, but decided to leave the texture of the sheet intact. again...VERY quick versions...

I'm no expert on the matter, but the one thing that bothers me is the pictures look kinda flat, did you have any lighting equipment? if not then theres not much you can do, but a 3 point lighting setup in there to bring the girls out and stand out from the background I think would really help.

Pollywog
03-13-2010, 10:56 PM
lol, and out comes Dan from the corner with a low-blow to the ballsac.

I was assuming him and Dave were using the same lighting, perhaps not. Definitely more than one light source however, if my eyes serve me correctly.

We used my Nikon SB80DX's and one or two of my sunpak's to light through diffusers bounced off gold and silver reflectors here and there.

The difference between gords shots and mine is he is still learning how to USE the lighting effectively. (Not implying I'm a pro at this, just that I have more hands on practical experience)

It just comes down to where you place the camera in relation to the lights and the model and the settings you use. Composition.

Again, Gords first shoot using "models", I use that term loosely. Give him a few more months to learn and practice and things will pick up.

aspiring models. this was their first shoot ever
aspiring photographer, my first actual shoot, and only have had a dslr for about 6 months.

thanks for the helpful tips on how to improve, and I'll just disregard everything that isn't helpful.

I am going to get photoshop here in the next couple days and I'll actually spend some time editing the 12 i have left

I am running them all back through lightroom and an bumping the exposure a bit. we'll see how they turn out and I'll probably update the first post with the images when I am done

Not a huge fan of the playboy sheets, earrings, or the "hello gorgeous" wording on the one outfit, they add too much clutter and take away from the images. Otherwise, they look nice.

I do agree with you there. the shoot was their idea, location and wardrobe choices. I was just happy to get a chance to try this type of shoot.

When shooting TF the idea is that both parties gain the same amount from it. If both people are inexperienced as in this case you should both be happy with the particulars of the shoot.

Don't let them force ideas you don't like, then it means they're gaining more than you(they're getting pictures they want and you're not).

If it were an experienced model and she had a specific concept in mind that would be different since now you're gaining in the sense you're working with an experienced model. Same thing the other way, an experienced photographer working with a new model can pick and choose concepts because he's offering more to the process than the inexperienced model. Make sense?

Yes I do get it. the only pics they had were snap shots in a dark room by a friend, so they will have better pictures, and I have gained some practical experience.
