Can someone please tell me how much of a difference in performance between the Intel I5 vs the AMD Phenom II x4 805? I'm looking at 2 systems. The AMD is $660 and the Intel I5 is 996 at futureshop. I was just wondering if it was worth spending the extra cash on the I5 in the long run over the AMD. I"ll be using the computer for video editing and gaming.

AMD (http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku.asp?CatIds=72%2C73,355&webid=850947&affixedcode=WW)

Intel (http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/gateway-gateway-intel-core-i5-750-2-66ghz-computer-dx4831-03c-dx4831-03c/10137066.aspx?path=af39058a47b9b6a08025631f35f7b477en02)

thanx

if you look at some raw cpu benchmarks (http://www.cpubenchmark.net/) the difference is quite large. you can also look at some real world test charts such a tom's to see if the time saved per edit is worth it for you.

sure the amd system is a good deal, you could technically put a x4 965 in there and had cash to spare before you even sell the x4 805; it's also out of stock

you can forget about gaming on the amd unless you buy a new video card + power supply. the intel system is better, not sure how much, depending on what games you play.

and personally not a fan of gateway systems.

If you list your budget im sure some people on here can give you advice on a custom build. I think that's the way to go as opposed to futureshop/bestbuy packages. Im pretty sure you can get build a i5 based pc at the 600 dollar price range without the monitor. Intel is also releasing new cpu's, cant remember exactly when, but the price of current processors might drop by that time. If your doing gaming/video editing you would probably benefit from hyperthreading, which means you might also consider an i7 in your build. Post how much you are willing to spend and im sure you will be able to get better advice. Here is an example of someone else doing an i5 build.

Thanx Mushi. I am looking around the $600 range. Property tax is coming up and I really can't afford to spend too much. I've looked at the price for the intel I5 and that alone is $200. I'm not that much in a hurry, but having a speedier system would be nice. :)

Does 600 include the monitor, mice and keyboard? Also could any of the parts in your existing system be used in the new one, ie power supply, case, dvd rom.

Case: Antec 300 $50
Power Supply: Antec 650W $90
Cpu/Mobo: i5 750/DP55WB $330
Ram: Gskill 4gb ddr3 $100
Video Card:Gefore 9800GTX or Radeon 4850 $120
Hard Drive: WD 640 gig $60
DVD: Any will do $25
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Im to lazy to post link, but these are realistic numbers. Comes to About 775 + shipping+tax: ~800

If you are using the computer for gaming/video editing it will be tough to do it on 600 as you need a fairly decent power supply/video card. Without the video card im sure you can probably put it together in the mid/high 600 dollar range (~680).

Most of the older duo cores/qauds havnt really come down in price so it makes more sense to go with something like an i5 if going the intel route.

The alternative is doing an AMD build. Even though amd has some good budget cpu's at the higher end, intel takes the lead in terms of performance. You would save some money going with amd, but not much, the price of the case/ps/video card/ hard drive etc wont change, so really you are only saving maybe only $100. Im not an expert on the current state cpu's/video cards so maybe someone else can chime in.
