Personally, I'd rather have an XTerra than a CRV or RAV4. Its closer to a true SUV than either of those two and is close to the $30k budget range.

midsize is explorer/envoy/pathfinder/highlander size.

You're talking about compact SUVs.

I think the best 3 are the Escape/Tribute, Forrester and CR-V

Other ones in this class are Rav 4, Liberty, Xterra, Tracker, Santa Fe. Don't even waste your time with the Suzuki or Kia.

thanx all, i will talk to my mom about it and go check them out next weekend... ( they are trying to stay away from American cars cuz we already had 2 and both of them sux like a PoS, so we gonna try Japan)

Rave4 is cheap

Hmm... Rav4's i've driven and they are quite underpowered, the xterra's are nice and gotta love the forester's although they are a little more pricey. :)

If your mom ever wants a used one, I have my 97 Infiniti QX4 for sale for $26500. NO GST! :D

I test drove an Xterra(supercharged) and then went and test drove the Liberty. In my opinion the Liberty seemed to have more power, when you floor it would go. I thought the Xterra seemed to lag.

yea my uncle wanted a midsize to fullsize suv and we went all over.....even went to isuzu and in my opinion and same with my uncles (obviously) the xterra was the best....CRV's and RAV4's are way overpriced compared to it

WORD!
I love my driving my dads forester! hehe

If you want a car base style SUV, definitely give the Subarus some thought! Or how about WRX wagon? Total sleeper!

I love the look of the Xterra, so rugged, perfect for everything!

my dad is thinking about buying a new forester *sigh*
that would be 3 subaru's in the family.

the forester isn't a bad get around vehicle but a little under powered.

Just don't turn the A/C on:p

And that is exactly why I didn't buy a WRX! Cause that would make it three as well!

ah thanx all im gonna keep an eye out for:

Xterra
Forester
liberty
CR-V

personally i dont really like the look of the forester, nothign special ;( but i will check out the price and compare them, i rather have a weaker car but fully loaded than a more powerful one w/ no options ( keeping it as close to 30k as possible)

Highlander- too expensive + dont need 7 seats.

We have a 2002 Liberty in our garage right now. I drive it often and personally think it's a good SUV.

Kia is taking orders for their brand new SUV. I know they have a bad reputation but I got to drive a test model at Kia City through a friend just for fun. It's actually pretty nice looking and drove pretty good. Fully loaded with leather for a fair price. :)

The escape uses as many japanese parts as american. It was co-developed by mazda and ford. The 3L duratech engine is mostly mazda innovation. Its also the quickest compact SUV you can buy. 0-60 in just under 8 seconds. Don't dismiss this one. It drives like a car and its damn fun. There's tons of room in the back seat too. Read any review, there's more room back there than anything in its class. Leather seats aren't too bad either. Just tell your parents to test the Tribute and don't say its in any relation to the Escape ;)

I don't know about that new kia. My friend has a sportage and its the biggest peice of shit ever built. EVERYTHING on it and I mean everything is inferior to everything in its class. Its tiny engine struggles under the weight. We timed 0-60 at 15 seconds with 3 people in the car

That is true about the Sportage. My friend says he cringes when people leave the lot with the Sportage. He doesn't BS me about quality of the cars because i'll never buy one. He says only good things about the new SUV. I believe he said it $32000 fully loaded.

When I was looking for SUV's earlier on this year, I was pretty impressed with the Tribute ES-V6. I think it was just under $33,000 with leather and the sunroof. Totally stay away from any 4cyl SUV, you'll totally regret it. I never looked at the Xterra's but their look is slowly growing on me. In the past year, we have looked at every SUV ranging from the Liberty to the X5. There is so many out there. Our whole family is really happy with our MDX and I think fully loaded with extended warranty it was just over $56K

Stratus_Power

hmm just over 56k.. good deal :P

I would look into a subaru forrester. Not quite as much interior space or ground clearance as a Escape or Xterra, but at least in an emergency situation your car wont instantly roll and kill everyone inside!
