im pretty sure 160 gb ps3's dont have backwards capability

Any model beyond the CECHE01 are not PS2 compatible. So, only the release 20/60's and the second gen 60 are compatible. The new 160GB is CECHP and CECHQ.
However, ALL PS3's, including the new slimlines, are PS1 compatible via software emulation.

I concur.
BWC Models:
20GB, 60GB, Original 80GB and the MGS4 Edition 80GB PS3.
Non-BWC Models:
40GB, Newer 80GB, 160GB, 120GB(Slim), 250GB(Slim).
This is negligible if you have taken one of the BWC models and upgraded the Hard drive.
If i were you, i would give Best Buy a call telling them about their "great" customer service.
