Porsche is "close to building" a four-seater coupe or even a sports saloon, according to Automotive News Europe, as it attempts to diversify away from its core sports car products. Analysts say that there is a good business case for a 'fourth model' to join the Boxster, 911 and Cayenne ranges, and insiders say that prototypes for this car are already testing on private tracks.
The car could be on sale by 2006, and will be Porsche's first full four-seater sports car (as opposed to the cramped 2+2 928, 924, 944 or 968 models). Commentators say that it could either share an all-new platform with an equivalent new Volkswagen, be developed from the Cayenne/Touareg platform, or perhaps another Volkswagen luxury car platform. VW is working on a new mid-sized platform, possibly in collaboration with Maserati, and this could also be used for the Porsche.
The Spies say: If the Cayenne is a success, you'll see this car...if not, it will never see the light of day
