No I don't, but it was a good bike. Mostly used it to commute to highschool. Tried dj'ing on it a few times but I always preferred to ride my mtb for anything big. That must have been about 8-9 yrs ago. Good times.

^ Do you know where it ended up? I used a years worth of paper route savings to buy that thing. $1138 back in 2001. Probably the most expensive BMX available at the time.

Mike; I rode it for about 2-3 yrs, then it needed a bunch of maintenance and I didn't have any money to fix it up, so it sat in my parents garage for another year or two. My dad wanted it gone so I gave away most of the good condition parts to friends, the rest went into the dumpster :(

I saw swak's sweet commuter in another thread, and thought it would be neat to see what everyone else is riding. i would post mine except that I stopped commuting last year because I moved way too far from work... however, i'm moving again in August and will be in the market for a new commuter, so maybe I can get some inspiration from y'all.

I absolutely love it! No hinge movements because of the awesome locking mechanism that they built. Of course, it won't survive on BIG jumps but it suffices for the usual sidewalk conquering and mini-trails; where it was truly built for. Mine is the 2007 model so it has the highly-desirable Joe Murray-designed frame. Drool.

I also love how I can just throw it in a trunk or fold it to save room on the C-Train whenever I'm heading to downtown.

Frankly, I bought it to fuckin' show-off. The portability came as an added bonus

I'm planning to switch the Big Apple tires because it's too slick for me. Looking to replace it this weekend with some Kenda's (http://s3.amazonaws.com/theoatmeal-img/blog/coffee_duck/coffee_duck_thumb.jpg) and those clips.

Absolutely love it man

On interval training days some days i opt for this guy just due its geo and style.
I had a Pake Chromo prior, and this frame is actually 1000% noticeably a nicer ride.

Stiff as nails too - i crashed it into a tree last year on a drunk pub ride and no bends etc... Still rock hard. - Thats what you get when you spend way too much on a commuter i guess though haha

On my pake, on a wet day i took a corner too aggressively and "low sided" and bent the fork all up etc.. (and this was a lighter crash than the tree too).

Surly is a STUD as far as im concerned.

Instead of getting rid of bikes, I bought another one :)

Niner One-9 Scandium singlespeed. Mostly for fun and some strength training as I already have another XC bike. I think the Reba needs a rebuild as the lockout doesn't seem to work. Also going to either flip the stem or buy a different one.

Added to the stable, now at 6 bikes.

I thought I'd post up my build. Took my 12 year old Schwinn and turned it into a single speed commuter, I was getting tired of having to kick my front derailer in the winter to get it to shift and having my chain come off from the rear tensioner gumming up with rust sludge. The only parts that got kept are the frame, rear brakes, rear wheel, and saddle (which was new, and no making fun, you piss blood for a week from a mountain bike crash and you'll get something cushy for every day riding too).

1. What the bike looked like new (not my pic):
http://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-4vACYaBedzw/UFv2eR9K_1I/AAAAAAAAALk/EF5LNMTG_No/s667/greenwich+1%2C+schwinn+026.jpeg

2. What the bike looked like after a quick hacked trial single speed conversion:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-hZqenMEyCuU/UFv3fvczu9I/AAAAAAAAAL0/TNBkNN4zuV0/s669/photo-1.JPG

3. Tada!
http://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Y6I1i9Vd1hY/UFv2d9jyjSI/AAAAAAAAALc/bIx0GFzfb8k/s640/bike1.jpg

-Stripped the frame to bare metal and painted
-converted from a threaded headset to threadless
-Put it back to a rigid fork
-converted to front mechanical disc brake
-converted to single speed
-new headset, bars, brake levers, bottom bracket, crank, rear cog, spacers, front wheel, fork, disc brakes, and brake cables.

Brakes and threadless headset:

Being 6'7", this is about as big of a bike as you could get in 1999, for 12 years it was all I knew until I got my new bike (now that they make giant frame 29ers, I actually get a bike that fits). But no, I'm totally used to it, I've taken this thing on 2 hour rides before, no problem.

Edit: From earlier in the thread, here's what I hit the trails with. If you see them side by side it's hilarious, the 29er is at least 6 inches longer and significantly taller. It looks like a monster bike:

That commuter looks awkward and uncomfortable. If you're 6'7" you should really be on a 23" frame so you get the longer top tube and don't have crazy seat post extension :)

That is a 23" frame..... ;)

Also, that seat height is after a very quick test fit, it's probably down about 1" from that picture at my 'cruising around town' height. I also threw a 35 degree stem on it to bring the bars up and it looks like as normal of a bike as a guy my size is going to get on a 12 year old frame.

Arizona, i scoured ebay until i found a source that would ship to canada and pounced on it. $400 for the bike, $250ish to ship to canada, then I put some new tires on it because the old ones were from the 70's.

I have to get back in touch with ryan @ bow, he knows a shop that can help me fix the front fork which is slightly askew. steel fork and it is only cosmetic, so maybe this year i will get it fixed. it is a surprisingly nice ride, getting used to kick back brakes again was weird, but it rides like any bmx, and is built like a tank, I honestly don't know why more people don't have them. I saw a girl riding a reissue, but those are generally POS's that were made in china and do not hold up long term.

Nice you're obviously a big fan of them if you went through all that trouble to get one. Have you been on the schwinn forums at all? Surely you have lol there are some real gurus and serious collectors of stingrays in the states. There's one dude that has basically a museum of them with probly around a hundred.

There are some crazy collector state sides, I did a lot of research to find parts but while there are resources out there, it's still the same cross border shopping bs. Prime example, $40 shipping on the rear tire

Yeah, it's very noticeable. I'll be honest though there are pro's and cons to a 29'r, it's not the best wheel size for everyone and it really depends on the kind of riding you do.

Rollover is probably the biggest benefit and better fit coming second. It's definitely harder to get started rolling though as a drawback.

I guess I'll have to take one for a spin sometime. The rollover factor is good and the second best benefit would be for tall people I would think. They would make a good fit for anyone 6' and over.

Yeah, I'm 6'7" and never had a bike that properly fit until my 29er.

IMO, 23" frames with 26" wheels just look silly and poorly proportioned.

Same with someone 5'0" riding a 15" frame with 29" wheels. The wheel debate makes sense for the sizes in between where it depends on riding style/preference, but for giants and midgets, it becomes more obvious.

Sweet! Have you narrowed down a type and budget-ish? Cyclocross would be my choice, especially coming from what you had. Reliable daily driver, fast, comfortable and you can keep up with the roadies on the highway without having a racing frame geometry - you're welcome to join me when you find your next bike on the highways, I'm slow as hell anyways lol.

One thing I need to get rid of is the hand pump on the top tube. Every time I come out of the saddle the handle gets caught in my shorts somehow

An FYI, Alpina helmets are silly cheap at MEC. They must be clearing them all out.

This is what I'm eyeing up :D

Also found a good training hill if anyone is looking. The grade isn't too bad but it goes on for awhile. Low volume traffic.

Yeah I keep flipping back and forth between a cyclocross and a hybrid. Right now I'm 75% leaning towards a CX, but good deals on hybrids keep coming up on Kijiji and Pinkbike haha

I'm surprised this build uses XT components and not Saint. Or maybe I have it backwards and XT is the top line for Shimano now?

Saint is Shimano's DH/Freeride line. Absolute top of the line is XTR but that's more for XC guys with big budgets. XT is a notch below but easier on the wallet.

I recommend tilting your seat forward a bit - less pressure on the testicular region. Should be more comfortable for the longer rides.

Also: Niner One9 that I just built up and will be using for 24hrs (I may switch to the other hardtail when rigid singlespeeding gets too painful)

And booyah!

Not even a week after selling my Kona Blast, I scored a Kona Jake on Pinkbike for less than $100 more than what I sold my old bike for -- $300 less than what I had budgeted for a replacement. Now I just need to find a pair of clipless shoes.

The Devinci has a lot of new parts on it though.

Good on you for being nuts, but is that thing actually any fun to ride? Seems like a rooty trail would be pretty awful.

What is the cog/ring combo? Can you make it up all the climbs with it on the 24h course? I'm always impressed by guys riding SS out here, lots of pretty steep stuff that has most people using granny or second a lot.

I took it for a good rip today - first time with the rigid fork on there as I used to run a Reba. The carbon fork + foam grip combo is surprisingly good. I was expecting it to be much more rattly, but am super happy with the ride. I'll be switching to tubeless, which should help smooth it out more. Rode some singletrack today and felt right at home.

I'm running a 32:22 gear combo. Can't get much easier unless you go 29 tooth front. The bike is light and climbs like a goat.
On last year's course I rode mostly in the middle chain ring, so I think it's do-able. The climbs aren't crazy steep, but there are some long stretches. I'm hoping to get at least 2 laps on the SS because it's a hell of a lot of fun to ride (and probably slower than my geared bike).

That's gutsy :)

I wouldn't have the balls to make that kind of a jump. If you are looking at your gear inches if i assumed your middle ring last year was also a 32 you would have had a bail out of 24.6 (36 tooth) or 26.0 (34 tooth). With a 32-22 your only gear is 40.2.

Last year at the 24 hours I ran a 38-26 front and 11-36 rear and by my 4th lap I was feeling it, im fat and used to running a 24 tooth granny ;)

I definitely wouldnt want to be you climbing out of the start and the last section through "Road to Ruin". You'll have to let me know how it goes because i've been toying with turning my ti hardtail into a single speed.

I don't know how some guys are able to do 24hrs singlespeed. Fortunately I'm on a 5 person team so I'll have decent recovery time. Could potentially look at breaking up an old cassette for cheater singlespeed gearing :D

Weird coincidence - but talked to someone briefly on the 7th street bike lane at a light on a F65x. Said, "It's been a good bike, but I've only had it 4 days". You?

Well, my bikes don't really compare to some of the impressive shit you guys got, but here's my set.

1980-85ish? Nishiki International 12 Speed

This was actually Speedog's bike, and had spent almost 8-10 years in the garage rafters in shambles before I got to it. He had used this as a commuter for 20+ years, then bought a Electra Straight8 and then left this bike to rest.

I was looking for a commuter to use instead of my Electra Rockabilly Boogie (see below), so he gave it to me and i started to rebuild/retrofit the bike with a mix of components to make a frankenbike

Changes/fixes I have made include:
Shortened handlebar stem (I am shorter and slighter than Speedog)
New Tires (old ones were cracked)
Switched to taped handles from the original foam
New Saddle (again I am small so the stock saddle was really uncomfortable)
Rebuilt the bottom bracket
Rebuilt front and rear hubs
New Chain
Removed the water bottle cradle
Removed all but one of the reflectors

Future Mods:
New Peddles (the current one click under almost all pedaling)
Possibly a newer gear set and derailleurs
New wheels and hubs
EDIT: New brakes are also on the wish list ;)

I know this bike is a bit rough looking, but to me it is special, as I like to think of it as a survivor

Electra Rockabilly Boogie (2008)

This was actually the very first thing I bought with my first pay check from my first tax paying job lol.

3 Speed, with coaster brake and cruising in style.
Not the best to commute in as you are limited by the amount of gears, and if there is a wind you had sure as to hell hope it is behind you.
Still love this bike for short rides and dates with the girlyfriend.
