Section 4 of Calgary bylaw # 41M2002 (http://www.calgary.ca/DocGallery/BU/cityclerks/41M2002.pdf) - a $36 fine (if paid early), $50 if not paid early.

JDM style is against the bylaw... only if they catch you or is reported.

Years ago I was parked on the other side of the street at a friend’s house and his neighbor was a cop and told me that it was technically illegal to be parked like that... but you either have had to piss off your neighbors for them to call and report it (even than chances are no one will come) or a cop (even a bylaw officer I believe) has to be driving by and in a bad mood....

So in short... yes its illegal... chances of you getting a ticket... VERY slim

I remember when I moved here that I kept seeing people parked like that and thinking "They've had tagged and towed that bastard within an hour in Winnipeg".

I had no idea it was actually 'illegal' here, seems like so many people get away with it anyway.

Ya, you get ticket. I got one in front of my house with the engine on, stupid cockbag didn't even care I had a parking permit or was in my house for 5 minutes.

I didn't read the whole thing but can I park my bike facing the wrong way on the street? Section 4 say the right hand wheels need to be no more then 500mm from the curb...

4. (1) When parking on a roadway, a driver of a vehicle shall park that vehicle with the sides of it parallel to the curb or edge of the roadway and:
(a) with the right hand wheels of it not more than 500 millimetres from the right hand curb or edge of the roadway;

Touche.
I love Winnipeg in this sense.
.. Same with their winter parking laws.

.. Some guy does this on my street, it doesn't bother me, and im not the type to report something so trivial...
But it boggles my mind how people even think parking the wrong way on the wrong side of the street is at all a good idea.

Agreed.

What benefit is there in parking that way anyway?

I got ticketed for parking backwards in front of my house twice in one year. Both times I was in and out within a couple of hours.

I think an even bigger question is WHY it's illegal to park backwards. I've always wondered. :dunno:

Parking more than 50cm from the curb with the right hand tires is illegal as stated above. Plus you'll have to drive the wrong way (in the oncoming lane) to do it, so double whammy if an officer sees you.

Yeah, you'd have to be in the wrong lane to accomplish it (both coming and going). Plus to pull into traffic you can't properly see all the traffic around you and pulling out would be considered unsafe.

Maybe my point wasn't very clear. I'm not debating the legality of it. I know it's illegal, but what I'm interested is the rationale/reasoning behind why it is illegal. The last half of your comment might have something to do with it.

Drive down a street at night that has a car on your left side driving towards you (on coming traffic) and a fucking idiot who is sititng in his car on the right side with his head lights on as well, its extremely blinding to have 2 sets of lights, on either side facing you.

Makes sense if you're talking about a busy street in a commerical area. On slower, less busy residential streets, it seems a bit overkill.

Good point. Never thought about that. I guess having slanted eyes has it's advantages.

Yeah but it makes no sense to write one law for residential and one law for busy roads. Especially since a lot of residential streets can be pretty busy at some times of day (or all day). Besides, I guess it only takes one car driving by that you can't see before there's an accident. :dunno:

Here's an example:

A house I renovated was located here (http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=&daddr=51.040042,-113.956171&hl=en&geocode=&mra=mi&mrsp=0&sz=18&sll=51.039775,-113.955882&sspn=0.001572,0.006866&ie=UTF8&ll=51.039893,-113.956005&spn=0.001572,0.006866&t=h&z=18) (location B, 2nd house in from the corner, on the south side of the street). So whenever I parked there, it was a pain to go all the way to the end of the block, make a 3 point U-turn (very small street) and back down so that I was parked the right direction. So I always just made the right turn off 54th Street and then parked in front of the house on the left-hand side. To leave, I'd just reverse back onto 54th, and then drive off. Very quiet street, the only traffic was neighbours. No one ever complained. I'd park overnight that way.

Here's a better look: street view (http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=&daddr=51.040042,-113.956171&hl=en&geocode=&mra=mi&mrsp=0&sz=18&sll=51.039775,-113.955882&sspn=0.001572,0.006866&ie=UTF8&ll=51.040055,-113.955576&spn=0,359.993134&t=h&z=18&layer=c&cbll=51.040169,-113.955575&panoid=lExW92-Iu-jMQkWvR9VU9g&cbp=12,266.82,,0,3.45)

I'd park in front of the red van....(skyline usually wasn't there)

1. The driver can exit directly onto the sidewalk. Safer? Perhaps. From a practical standpoint in the winter, you can step onto a shoveled sidewalk without putting your shoes into deep snow.

2. If you are in a tight spot and have to unload a lot of shit out of the back of a Rav4 or similar vehicle with a tailgate that opens the wrong way.

Also if the car is parked unoccupied at night, there aren't any reflectors in the front to mark its position.

Illegal because you have to be driving the wrong way down the street in order to park like that.

Yup, those are the only two viable options. You sound like just the type of person for which those two laws were designed.

This is something I've also wondered, and you guys say its because of driving the wrong way, which make sense but what about a side-street for parking?

In front of our house we have just the side street, 1 lane for parking, 1 lane for driving, there is no actual signs saying one way, or indicating flow of traffic, generally people go both ways and just move over if someone is coming.

The reason I ask is because the one entrance its only possible to go the 'wrong' way down it, then have to find someones driveway to turn around and come back to our house.

The other entrance is only accessible when traveling East, so if you are coming from the West, its either use the parking lot entrance then go backwards down it, or go past the street, make a bunch of legal turns, and come back.

Lol, you must be a student, or live near the core. I have only noticed these in the older neighbourhoods where the roads are ridiculously tight, and only one lane with cars parked everywhere. As for your case, I really don't know why.
