Years ago I was parked on the other side of the street at a friend’s house and his neighbor was a cop and told me that it was technically illegal to be parked like that... but you either have had to piss off your neighbors for them to call and report it (even than chances are no one will come) or a cop (even a bylaw officer I believe) has to be driving by and in a bad mood....


So in short... yes its illegal... chances of you getting a ticket... VERY slim

Parking more than 50cm from the curb with the right hand tires is illegal as stated above. Plus you'll have to drive the wrong way (in the oncoming lane) to do it, so double whammy if an officer sees you.

Maybe my point wasn't very clear. I'm not debating the legality of it. I know it's illegal, but what I'm interested is the rationale/reasoning behind why it is illegal. The last half of your comment might have something to do with it.

Makes sense if you're talking about a busy street in a commerical area. On slower, less busy residential streets, it seems a bit overkill.

Yeah but it makes no sense to write one law for residential and one law for busy roads. Especially since a lot of residential streets can be pretty busy at some times of day (or all day). Besides, I guess it only takes one car driving by that you can't see before there's an accident. :dunno:

So whenever I parked there, it was a pain to go all the way to the end of the block, make a 3 point U-turn (very small street) and back down so that I was parked the right direction. So I always just made the right turn off 54th Street and then parked in front of the house on the left-hand side. To leave, I'd just reverse back onto 54th, and then drive off. Very quiet street, the only traffic was neighbours. No one ever complained. I'd park overnight that way.

1. The driver can exit directly onto the sidewalk. Safer? Perhaps. From a practical standpoint in the winter, you can step onto a shoveled sidewalk without putting your shoes into deep snow.

2. If you are in a tight spot and have to unload a lot of shit out of the back of a Rav4 or similar vehicle with a tailgate that opens the wrong way.

In front of our house we have just the side street, 1 lane for parking, 1 lane for driving, there is no actual signs saying one way, or indicating flow of traffic, generally people go both ways and just move over if someone is coming.

The reason I ask is because the one entrance its only possible to go the 'wrong' way down it, then have to find someones driveway to turn around and come back to our house.

The other entrance is only accessible when traveling East, so if you are coming from the West, its either use the parking lot entrance then go backwards down it, or go past the street, make a bunch of legal turns, and come back.

Lol, you must be a student, or live near the core. I have only noticed these in the older neighbourhoods where the roads are ridiculously tight, and only one lane with cars parked everywhere. As for your case, I really don't know why.
