This is one of those questions that requires many others to be answered first...

Example:
-Do you need video capabilities?

-What will you primarily be taking pictures of?

-Where do you want to take your photography in the future? Hobbyist or Semi/Pro?

-What is your budget?

-Would a smaller four/thirds camera such as the Olympus Pen be ideal, or is size not an issue?

-Will you be using mainly automatic modes or manual ones?

etc.

Just give us a bit more detail as to what you want from your camera and how much you want to spend. Maybe post some shots and we can get an idea of what you are in to.

2 to 4 bills? as in hundreds or thousands? Either way, sounds like a Nikon D5000 or a D90 (depending on budget) would be right up your alley. They take great pictures in their auto modes while leaving you the opportunity to use as many manual features as you would need in the future.

You're going to have to raise your budget a little bit even to get into the most entry level DSLRs and a kit lens. For about $500 you can get a D3000 and the kit lens, and at least then you will be into a good system if you want to expand.

Look into the used market man. I didn't want to spend a lot at the beginning and scored a gem with a lens. The nice thing I've noticed so far with the used market, photographers seem to be honest people who take care of their gear. The reason for selling is 90% because they want to upgrade lol.
