1985 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3L 8V

I know there are a lot of Mercedes enthusiasts on this board, and I'm hoping some of you guys can help me out. I just have a few questions regarding 190's.

-Are there any specific things I should look for if I were to go check out a 190, which was up for sale?
-Are there any specific problems with an 85 190 2.3L?
-What else should I be looking for?

Any help, comments and concerns would be appreciated.

Thank you.

i suggest looking for the rarer 190E 2.3L 16V model. Very reliable and proven motor. In fact, the SLK 230 (and the original C230 sedan/sports coupe) used the supercharged version of this motor. Should hold value better as well.

I would go for one rage but I only need a car until the summer for now...and I don't want to spend too much money because the 16V cosworth will probably go for about $15,000 or somewhere around that price range unless I’m extremely lucky.

If anyone can answer those questions and/or give me some useful link that would be great.
Thanks!

I thought about a 190e before I bought the 944..the 16V is just priced way to high for what it is and I hear they arernt very reliable..Id sooner pick up a 944 turbo for the money theyre going for

My buddy has a 190D with 400 000km on it, all he had to replace were the glow plugs (diesel engine), great cars!!!

16V is a very high strung motor...i'd avoid it unless you really know the owner or all service records are maintained.

Rage, are you sure about the 2.3 in the SLK? I find it hard to believe the same motor from 1985 would be put in an SLK...

1985 was the first year in NA i believe...the 190E came out in 1984 in Europe.

I wouldn't suggest an '85...go with as new as your budget allows...the 190E 2.3 went to 1993...

Check the usual stuff: A/C blower motor, emissions pump, throttle cable, etc..

hope that helps...

T5_X: Yea chances of finding a 190 with minual isn't so big, I am certian this one has one, I should double check just incase I misread.

Redlyne_mr2: Yea I think they are a little over priced but only about 3000 or something like that were shipped to North America.

calgarys13: I've been a memeber for a couple of months now, its a great site.

A_3: thats awesome!! This one has about 150,000KM not a lot for a 85...hope it wasn't rolled back.

ZorroAMG: Thanks Zorro that helps a lot!!

Thanks guys.

I'm still kicking myself for missing out on this 89 300E AMG in Edmonton. Imported from Japan with only 84000 kms (same as pic except not lowered) :banghead:

man i know my 190s and the best one to own would be a 190d 2.5 turbo diesel..those are insanley rare almost as rare as the evos...ur best bet would be a cossie with a turbo setup. some guys running a t3 turbo on his with a fmic and motec igntion on stock internals pushing 440 at the crank..the things nuts...btw if this is /////amg ur a little fag..if not pm me man ill arrange a gtg of 190s in calgary its been talked about before i know theres a few 16 valves a 2.6 sportline and my friends blue evo 2.....

Hold on to your privates........

$10,500

Some doctor up in edmonton. Couldn't get up there in time because people were going to take it for an inspection the next day (saw it the night before). But I think it was his sons car and it sounded kinda fishy that he imported it for him 4 months ago and now the kid wanted to sell it because it was, get this,... too big.

10.5, I woulda thought at least 18-20??? that's crazy...

Too big?? W124 is actually pretty small...

ZorroAMG

10,000 is low for a car like that, although there may have been a lot wrong with it...most likely a car with 84000 K and 14 yrs of age will have a number of things go because seals are swelled or dried out from under use....

Hakk, you are out to lunch with 18-20 for an 89, as the next year (mine) had some significant changes and I doubt I could pull $20K for mine with even more mods than that one...

Is yours an AMG with only 84K? I'd think 18-20 is a conservative guess :dunno:

ummm buddy..there is NO AMG car for the W124 besides the W124 Coupe AMG Hammer were only 200 were made, and cost 160K USD. My car is as much AMG as that car is, has WAY more features standard and therefore will cost more...

Understand I know much more about the W124 than most people on this board and when I give advice about it, I HAVE done my homework and know the car quite well.

I'm pretty sure its a true AMG. Its from Japan. When I did some research on it there came up AMG packaged E300 just not available in North America. More just like it in Japan. Australia has a few.

The AMG Hammer.....

Still, a true AMG has engine, suspension transmisson/drivetrain mods...

A 300E with a body kit (like mine) is NOT a true AMG car even if it were available from the factory.

E300 is not an AMG designation..

Being from Japan does not make it a true AMG AT ALL.. they simply have a great affinity for the W124 and enjoy modding it, that is why there are so many there.

This one did have AMG engine etc. Made sure because at first I thought that it was just a skirt-kitted E300. But apparently they made an AMG E300 just not in North America. Do some searching and see if you come up with anything.
