During testing, the Consumer Reports crew found that the traction control on the GX would allow the vehicle to slide nearly completely sideways before getting everything in line.

It must be a special sport drift mode.........

LOL, would be sweet, except for the fact that drifting in an SUV is more commonly known as a rollover :D

Lift-off oversteer making a Lexus less boring? Sounds like a step in the right direction to me!

The new GX is actually super nice. You can't win, people complain that the T/C is to intrusive or they complain that it's not enough. :dunno:

I can't believe how much people in your industry move around.

My BIL went from
Country Hills Toyota
Calgary BMW
Country Hills Toyota
Lonestar

Within 3 years.

^ How many people are loyal to one brand for life?

I'm not a saleman so I don't know the biz, so here's my guess:

But with luxury brand you don't have to worry about volume due to high margins. With common brands, you may have to sell like 10 Civics to get the same commission of 1 335i.

So you really have to be established have have a big customer base to survived in non-luxury brand dealerships.

they just need to get the throttle to stick, to counter the sudden lift oversteer 'problem'.

It wouldn't be the first time Consumer Reports cried about SUV's.

And it would be stability management, not traction control that would help out in this case.

Not 10 civics, but maybe 4 or 5 if they are all minimum deals for Civics. There's way more money in luxury car sales for sure.

I saw this on the news the other day. I think it's totally overblown. It sucks for Toyota. And it's great advertising for Consumer Reports. That GX was not even close to being in danger of rolling over. If this is such a concern, maybe CR should also issue do not buy for every rear engine Porsche out there. Seriously... What did people do before traction and stability control? Um.. Oh yeah, they drove!

And their tests showed lift off oversteer at fairly high speeds. The news report likened it to "a scenario like coming off a highway ramp". Really at those speeds most cars would probably understeer anyway and still head for the ditch.

Frankly I think it's great that Toyota finally has a performance car/drifter in it's stable!!! :D

How dare you..... Toyota had a drifter all along.....

http://www.autoclub.co.jp/den_en/stock/ae86-1.jpg

While it may be overblown, I'm sure CR is objective enough to throw other SUVs into the same test. After all, they never complained about another SUV since 2003 and we had tons of them since then.

http://www.autoblog.com/2010/04/14/why-the-lexus-gx-may-be-rollover-prone/

Most modern vehicles will simply understeer straight ahead at the limit. The GX, on the other hand, suddenly swung its rear end sideways. The ESC did not immediately intervene and bring it back in line. Instead, it responded late and because of the degree of instability, it brought the vehicle to a complete halt. Just to make sure this wasn't a problem with one particular vehicle, CR procured a second example that exhibited the same behavior. This is particularly surprising because Toyota/Lexus products have a reputation for having overly aggressive ESC systems that tend to intervene early and often.

^^^

One, number of recalls is a bad measurement -- recalls can be a good thing as well as a bad thing.

Secondly, those stats in the letter are meaningless without the total number of cars sold by each manufacturer.

Dinner is a nice touch though :D
