she called and the guy didn't know how many km's and wouldn't go out and check.

theres no rust, it looks like its in good shape.

he said he wants $7500 dollars. i think he should put $7500 up his ass.

I would say anyone not giving you this info is really not someone to be selling a car, walk away. Plenty on Ebay to compare, 7K buys a ton of VW:

It had better be extra mint for that kind of money, its a 73 so likely has a 5 digit odometer which makes it so hard to tell how many rounds its done, not that mileage should even matter when purchaseing such a old car.

It amazes me that some people who are supposedly "selling" their car have zero ambition to do something as minor as mileage check....

he must really want to sell it, combine that with the insane price hike...sounds like a good guy to deal with :thumbsdow

Making the guy go outside to check the mileage on a 5 digit speedo, on a 35 year old car is like asking him to go outside and report back on much oil is showing on the dipstick.

True, but it has happened to me on many occasions, and none were that old, or with 5 digits. Just saying, people are lazy these days, and most still expect top dollar yet don't go out of their way at all to earn it.

$7500 would buy a mint, fully restored bug. For an average condition, fully running beetle I'd say MAX $5000.

Really depends on condition and period correct accessories for a Beetle. That does sound real steep for a run of mill '73.

i had a '72 super beetle about 12 years ago. the price really depends on the condition, what has been done in terms of restoration, what brands of parts were used, what the engine is like (new, rebuilt, etc.), what kind of records the seller has, etc. etc. etc... it's really hard to say whether or not $7k is reasonable for this beetle. you could easily pay twice that for a sweet example. you need to go talk with the guy and see what work has been done. ask for receipts, etc. take it in to bushmaster and have them verify the work and give you an appraisal.

mileage on these things really means nothing, since any good example will have a new or rebuilt engine, maybe several times over. many parts will probably have been restored or replaced. these are nice cars to work on, since there is a very large aftermarket and you can almost build a new car form aftermarket parts haha. and they are reasonably cheap.

make sure you check the heater channels underneath the car. they were notorious for rusting out, preventing any heat flow from the engine into the cab.

if your mom is willing to drop $7k on something like this, tell her to spend $1k more and get this. IMO, a FAR awesomer car than the '73 super beetle.

x2 on taking it to bushmasters. If she's willing to spend that much or so on a beetle you definitely want to get it checked out and make sure any restoration was done properly and to confirm its not hiding rust.

what do you mean "wack?:

keep in mind that the beetle was designed by Dr. Ferdinand Porche, and the design is actually named the Porche Type 60. That's right, the beetle is really a Porche. This explains the AWESOME handling of the beetle, and also why the engine bay and bolt patterns are the same exact as Porche, meaning you can have an exact fit when dropping Porche engines in beetles.

before calling the beetle "wack," you should reconsider the history, and perhaps even get behind the wheel so you can see how these things drive. These are excellent little cars, considering they are a early 1940s design. They are also one of the best selling autos of all time - which means something.

yeah totally, if you're into collecting antiques.

$7500 for something that is 37 years years old, slow as fuck, and looks like a joke on wheels, is fucking wack. especially since it will DEFINETLY break and will end up costing you another $7500 to maintain.

she wants a weekend toy. $7500 will turn her 04 civic si into a god damn boost slut, an AWESOME EVERYDAY toy. paying 7500 for a beetle is ludicrous.

^^ok :D

but here's the point i'm trying to make:

here is a VW Karmann Ghia (beetle chassis w/ different body) with a porche 933 engine. sure, your mom isn't gonna drop that kinda cash on a beetle, but it's not fair to shit all over such an awesome and historically important design.

you misunderstood! i wasn't shitting all over the design. i was shitting all over the fact that the dumbass wants $7500 for it.

that car is sweet, looks MUCH better than a beetle. what year was that made?
