passport 8500 x50 radar detector

Anyone have one of these that could recommend settins for city driving? Also how do you make it scan? My friends can scan for police and feds but he forgets how to do it. Thanks

Christ. Okay, you bought a radar detector. There is no such thing as a cop detector.

Unless the vehicle is running radar, be it X, K, or Ka band, or someone is shooting LIDAR right at your detector, you aren't going to pick up squat.

Unfortunately, you WILL pick up a number of grocery stores, convenience stores, etc. Leave Ka turned on in-city, turn everything else off. Turn on K and X on the highway if you so desire, I have caught one LEO using X band south of Calgary in a small town called Nanton.

Its in the god damn manual. It does not SPOT COPS. It will detect radar. The 8500 x50 does not show the direction of the incoming signal. The V1 does. Not the 8500. So unless your "buddy" has a V1 it isnt showing shit.

There is a feature that shows a little "." that moves back and forth. If you were an idiot i imagine you could mistake that for "scanning". But again ITS IN THE MANUAL.

I have read it over and have yet to see it, my buddys is the exact same as mine and it has the scanner thing on and neither of us can find it.

Clearly it is. Broken x50's go for less than $25. Pretty much the cord and suction cups are the only things that are good. Sell to TRJ while you can still get something for it.

dude, undercovers use KA band for the most part so that is why his picks them up. Hell, mine does as well. Mine also picks up RCMP + Sherriffs as they drive with their radar on

It does absolutely NOTHING with regular cop cars. I was even lazered by a regular cop and it did shit all. not even a peep

You could tell yesturday was 4/20....

A. Undercover cops are...wait for it.....UNDERCOVER. This means that they are falsifying thier identity for a case. They wear plain clothes, and you wont know who the hell they are untill your house is raided one late night while your plowing you ol lady. The last god damn thing they are going to do is be blowing thier cover giving some asshole a speeding ticket. They are special officers and dont give traffic tickets.

B. Your refering to a GHOST CAR. This is a fully uniformed officer in a fully equiped cop car that is missing the external markings of a regular patrol car. These units are equiped with radar and lidar. Both of which the x50 can pick up.

C. "Regular Cops" Carry lidar and radar guns as well. Lidar for stand still speed measurement and radar for moving speed measurement. The same as a ghost car.

D. If you have been hit with lidar and your unit failed to detect it then its not properly installed or defective. It detects lidar. However, a detector is useless for lidar because when your hit with it, your speed has already been clocked. The most effective tool is a lidar "jammer" or shifter.

E. This thread is not full of Lolz. Its full of dissapointment. It shows me what the human race is coming too.

I have the escort 9500ix and it doesn't spot undercover cops, it only picks up the different bands and the lidar. However I have noticed that the X band goes off when I get close to a cop that has someone pulled over. I don't see the cop car right away but I'll be driving and the X band goes off and sure enough around the corner or over the hill is a cop on the side of the road. X band goes off long before I see the check stop too, so I'm thinking it has something to do with them using the computers in the car...

The x band goes off at random places sometimes, the k band is just plain annoying. As for the laser I can be ripping down deerfoot and get sniped by one and it tells me what's up

The feature you're talking about just changes the HUD on the detector.

I have mine set up so that it shows the mode its in with a little dot scrolling across the screen:

H. . . . . .
C. . . . . .
A. . . . . .

and so that it also shows mutiple bands of radar at once, making it easy to see how many different signals it's picking up. It basically looks like:

Ka ||| K | x||

with each vertical line representing one signal in that band, and increasing in height as the signal becomes stronger.

You can also set it up to display the exact wavelength of radar it's receiving, so if you're quite intelligent and have memorized what wavelengths the cops are using, you can ignore all the false alarms whether they be K, Ka, or X band.

Just hold down the two top buttons on the detector for 10seconds and the you can configure the HUD.

EDIT:

As for the LASER portion of the detector, it goes off everytime I go above 1.4Bar of boost. It's like my turbo shoots lasers at high boost.

laser is the worst, it sounds like an iraqi infidel screaming before blowing himself up. and it doesn't gradually ramp up like radar does, it's full on DELELELELELELELELE and scares me all the time.

Actually, before I had my jammer, laser detection did save me once. Cop was hiding under bridge, shooting waay to far out. I saw that he tagged me, spotted him, and just took the off ramp. He didn't chase.

I have a v1, it can detect RCMP from a looooong distance.. only because they leave their radars on. Same with some undercover police cars in town. Other than that it doesnt "detect cops". This is ONLY if they leave their radars on. I'm not 100% sure.. but it could be the built in radars they have.

I also have noticed it doesnt pick up the radar guns the cops use when they stand on the side of the road. Maybe its just me.. but i dont remember seeing mine go off when I see one.

Anybody else notice that the city has been putting up signs with radars built in, it will light up if you are going over the speed limit. They have them in Tuscany and Royal Oak.
