I googled the first issue, but i kept getting results on how to open doors with slim jim, so i thought i'd post here and post some other probs.. kill two birds with one stone

So firstly, the protege passenger door and driver door locks open again (if locked first) once the door is closed. Since it doesn't have automatic locks, i gotta manually push the locks down... for example when i'm about to get out of the car, if passenger pushes it down then closes the door.. it'll pop back up.. same deal with the driver

I can only get it to stay locked in two ways... either lock both driver and passenger doors with the key, or to push the lock down.. and keep handle lifted while closing the door.. once door is closed, release handle and it'll stay locked..

What might be the problem, any ideas for a quick fix?

Also, i found tonight the cluster back light wouldn't turn on + the rear lights on the car, so i immediately thought, fuse.. - well i checked the cluster fuse and its fine, however the rear light fuse was blown, so i popped another similar fuse in the spot to check to see if it'll fix.. and that one popped too -- so some short circuit somewhere?
In other words, I'm asking, how can i find out what/where the issue is? Do i gotta go somewhere to have it checked?

Sorry for the long posts, would appreciate any ideas

the door problem you are having is not a problem at all. they make the doors do that so you don't lock your keys in your car.

but as for your real problem i would at least take a look at the wires going in to the lights for broken wires or rubbing.
Shorts are a lot of fun to find so get a case of beer and fuses your going to be at it for a long time

Yeah i knew there was something like that.. but why the passenger door too? Makes it weird..
I know for a civic, you can't push the lock down in the first place (for driver)... and you have to use the key from the outside..
I guess just weird design.. thanks for clarifying

And for fuses.. i was really hoping to not get that answer -- thought there might be a better way
One question though, i don't have fuses to keep blowing...
Canadian tire has, what 3 in a box? Thats 3 shots before i'm fucked... or can i return? (that would be shitty to do tbh)

go to pick and pull and fill your pockets, or your tool box ;) its such a great place for little things like that.

Thanks alot =[]BARG[]=

I went to Craptire... and just bought 4 since pick n pull is too far from me... i thought i'd ask how long for their "diagnostic" team to find where the short is... he said 1 hour for $109 bucks or something along those lines

I brought it home... disconnected whatever i thought would be the cause... and it didn't pop.. then i did one by one, until i got to my right right speaker which was shorting out the fuse.. i guess they share the fuse

Thanks again for the help... now i need to find a new speaker, the ones in the rears are all torn

New problem.. so now everything is fine however discovered a new issue... when i turn the night lights (cluster lights) on.. my sony cd player goes off

The fuses are fine this time, I'm guessing the Cd player is asking for too much power? And the connections run out when lights are on?

Edit: Fixed!
It was the ground, someone told me it might be the ground plug... so i took out the ground pin and hooked a wire and hooked it up to a metal in the dash.. now they both turn on

Well when i got the car, i noticed the tail light fuse was blown as well.. so i dc'd every electrical component in the back end of the car including the speakers...

I'm playing with everything to learn, and I think I'm learning a lot

New thing i noticed:
When i turn the heater on, i smell exhaust -- this can't be good, where could it be coming in from?

Also the handbrake button sticks.. when i press it to release the hand brake, it won't pop back out, i either have to drop the hand brake until it clicks out, or just pop it out with my nail. It gets irritating after a while. Is this a easy fix? I think i heard someone say it would cost 200+ to replace since its pressured in there or something..

try pick and pull for i used hand break

or just try taking it apart might just be the spring inside

So its possible to take it apart? I'll play with it and see if i can dissect it and see what it is, and if i need another part

I think the spring is fine, it seems gets stuck by a small edge or something
If i figure out a part thats not working, then i'll check out pick n pull

Any ideas on the heater though?

Handbrake problem just got worse... AND I NEED HELP

So the problem was that the button would get stuck when i released the parking brake, and i had to pop it out with my nail or something. It still had the spring to it, but it seemed like the edge of the plastic or something would get stuck

So i took out the plastic cover to see whats under neath, apart from all the dirt - this is what it looked like

http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/5224/image113z.jpg

So seeing as i couldn't get to the button, i pulled the button out and it came out along with the metal it was screwed in with, i saw the spring inside - was fine
But then I fucked it up because now, the parking brake won't crank when i pull it... so i played with it, but nope.. nothing

I had to pull the whole thing out / dc'd the cable and everything,

http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/1491/img4121d.th.jpg (http://img52.imageshack.us/i/img4121d.jpg/)

See the button is out more than normal...

Now the problem is... there is a little latch type thing that goes into the gears so when i crank it, it doesn't fall back down... so when i press the button, a metal thing (from what i hear rattling inside) pushes the latch, and it releases it letting me put the parking brake down...
So the metal and the latch are no longer connected and i can't do shit, and like i said if i move the button i can hear it rattling in there

I though if i take the plastic thing off, i could probably figure out how to fix it, but the fucker refuses to come off in any way... I'm out of ideas... i need any sort of help on this please.. thanks

Here is button pulled out

The latch that hooks to the gear things

http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/8499/img4127zg.th.jpg (http://img191.imageshack.us/i/img4127zg.jpg/)

Latch on the gears, the wire inside suppose to be pushing it so it doesn't release, and when you press button it lets go, but the latch thing is loose

Any ideas?

If i can't fix this, i'd probably have to go to pick n pull and take out a whole hand brake thing assuming they work..

Edit: I fixed it -- took one from pick n pull and i replaced the mechanical stuff --
Took some other stuff like digital clock and working hazard button which mine didn't originally have

Awesome :)

Now 4 things left to fix, a sort of broken ashtray, the door lock is hard to pull up, and the exhaust has hole, exhaust smell from heater
