Alright, I'm not sure how many of you have driven one, or own one. I am thinking of getting an E60 BMW M5, just trade in my current car for a lightly used one. I've watched about every YT vid there is, and I just can't get convinced enough to get one.

What do you guys think about this car? Pros/Cons etc. Is there any problems with the 2006 MY compared to 2007+? (considering '06 was it's first year)

No problems specific to the early (06) cars that I'm aware of.

Eats oil.

Eats rear tires.

SMG isn't as bad as everyone says, especially in manual mode with shift speed set to fastest.

Very competent car year-round, just get winters.

HUD is a must-have option. Once you get used to having it, you'll miss it on any car without it.

I never had a problem, but I don't think I'd want one out of warranty.

Fairly inconspicuous, which can be a pro or con, depending on what you're after.

It's an absolute BEAST.

Great to know it's good in the winter, that was one thing I was afraid it it being incapable of considering it's 400-500hp on two wheels, though it is a heavier sedan.

How often does it need an oil change?

I'm fine with the tires balding quickly, no problem for me. What is BMW's service like?

Fortunately this one I found has warranty until 2013 :)

Beast of a car. Lot's of power, uses tones of fuel. Hate the transmission, but it feels like a 4 door super car.

I love 'em. I just wish the E60's headlamps didn't remind me of Dame Edna's spectacles.

They go through tires insanely fast.
Drink oil like an H22 Prelude - a lot of synthetic oil normally.
Super expensive to maintain and lots of issues with Vanos (normally) and SMG can have clutch issues. Manual transmission is more reliable.
Bluetooth is common to fail.
Plenty of sensors can go quirky and fail, SAS issues are common.
Some even have tranny failures! If it has a good amount of km/mileage it likely has a fine tranny.

I had one for a week last summer as a demo, unreal fast car, SUCH a beast, roasts 90% of the cars on the road. CEL came on twice, but went away once.

I'm guessing thats the one as it has the extended warranty till 2013. If you have any questions let me know, its my Fathers car....

Not sure if you have talked to Kulu about it, but it has ~20k in extras included!!
-20" HRE's (brand spankin new rubber)
-Eisenmann Exhaust
-H&R Springs
-Black kidney grills

It's not the frequency of the oil changes (20,000km), it's the appetite for oil that requires topping up.

I've never had a problem with BMW service (though many others have... that's another topic). As far as costs, my car was covered by a BMW service plan... I didn't spend a dime on the car...

Brother in law has one. Very fast for a car of that size. Lots of nice features but they are unreliable. So far, he's had to replace the SMG transmission (warranty), the idrive system, and a few other things I can't remember. Fixing them is astronomically expensive. The navigation unit alone lists for $1600 from BMW.

That's the one I was looking at! Haha, great conincedence. I'm going to see the car likely Wednesday, it's a great deal for the amount of KM and mods.

I'd look at a newer one with a manual transmission, from the states, but yeah, what everyone else said. Buy one, you'll love it.

I don't think I'd want one out of warranty, or keep $8,000 sitting in the BringMyWallet Fund. I think we all agree a wonderful car, one we all would want but really would not want to wake up with in the morning. As a previous owner of a BMW, I could never find a BMW dealership mechanic who actually owned a BMW... they all owned Japanese cars or a NA truck.

So many technological gadgets in these cars, paying $125 flat rate/hour just scares the crap out of me post warranty.

that's why there's good quality smaller European shops that will fix it for a reasonable $70-88 an hour. None of the BMW mechanic hacks.

Not all cars are "wayyyyy" cheaper in the US. Keep in mind that the 07+ M5s will likely need the $4K green levy to be paid, which eliminates a lot of the price advantage.

Pedigree can be worth paying more for.

Yes, I am planning to trade in the Rover for the ///M5. If the M5 deal falls through, I will go for an M3 (2009 hopefully.)

The rover in my sig is practically new (bought it new), 2009MY with 32k mileage. It's pimpin' in white and a great, I'm just looking for something sportier and faster :) talked to my insurance broker, an M5 is only 6% more than what I'm already paying for the Land Rover.

go for the m3. I myself cannot justify trading in a 09 for an 06. But if I was in your position I would go for the m3. Hope this helps.

Still with that $4k "levy", a US M5 will be $10k minimum to $20k cheaper US than Canadian M5's after importation!

You do have a point. Now that I come to think of it, you do have a great point, and there is a 2009 BMW M3 with 18,000km in the same color as this Kulu M5. I'll take less of a hit insurance wise for a 2dr, gas sipping (compared to m5) m3 with a lil' less HP, yet same if not better performance. Can't believe I didn't think this through before.

Although looking at mileage.. the 2006 has double the km, and 3 years older. Car was driven for 1/2 winter, and parked the other two, plus has ~20k in aftermarket parts. I wouldnt think that Performance isnt even close between the two cars...

This car has pulled on an M6 and another M5 with the exact same mods... its a quick one!

Yea I don't know whats up with my transmission. Its been whining since I bought it but somehow still hasn't grenaded. Maybe you can enlighten me as to why it only makes this whining noise in the first two gears???

You also thought the cage was put through the trunk.

No, you were being serious, stop back peddling. When I asked, you specifically mentioned the headlight of the white 328 being fogged up.

^Dubbs, the dans M3 was across the parking lot, and he was standing in front of the only other 2 bmws there.

Didn't really give it too much thought before I asked Dan. On my old 240, those kinds of cages were put through the trunk.

Yea that was the joke. A brand new sick looking BMW with a fogged up headlight. I ignored how sweet the BMW was and focused on the headlight, then lumped all BMW build quality in with it. See how ridiculous that is? It's called a joke, take one!

And yea, no friends. You came with nobody and tried unsuccessfully to make friends with everyone. Apparently nobody likes douchebags!
