My son is 14 months already and i wanted to know what is a good age to put him in hockey? He walks and now started running, should i be putting this guy on skates this coming winter or wait for awhile?

Thanks.

I started skating lessons at 3 and 4, first year of hockey when I was 5... but yah definitely stick to skating lessons first it will help a lot for tryouts.

For sure i don't want to give him a hockey stick yet. Just want him to skate first.

I've heard of kids as young as two being able to skate, I figure as soon as you can find them a pair of skates that fit they're old enough.

Actually I think there are beginners blades that can be fit to boots.

Bob skates, recommended for kids as young as two.

If the kid can walk well unassisted, he is good for skates. 14 months seems really too young, I started on skates when I was threeish, I would not call it skating though. There really is no rush.

The kid also needs to know how to fall, as this is what you do most of the time. I always thought judo would be good training ground for this, as a goalie I felt this training would be positive for hockey as is soccer. My line of thinking, the kid learns to be comfortable falling on a mat inside, and now the rink experience is not so dramatic. Plus judo teaches balance and other skills for life and sport.

Gretzky was on skates at two, so it says:

man my kid is 14 months and he JUST starting to walk, i wish he would run :( but i also agree that maybe right now is a LITTLE young for skates but at the winter mark, close enough to 2 to try. i was going to get mine in them at 2.

hell, i was gonna get him in kickboxing at 2 if i could, but they have such short attention spans, i dont know how that would work.

I think I was skating by about 3-4 and playing organized hockey by 6.

Why are you guys putting them in so early??

Reminds me of this Chinese girl I saw who could barely stand up in her skis and she was on a double black diamond run at Lake Louise. Her dad was yelling at her while she was bawling her eyes out. :thumbsdow

^ That's wrong. That's putting pressure on them.
If he doesn't enjoy skating then i'll take him out.
