Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone was planning another stocker run?

I'm very eager to get out for the first time and from what I've seen so far it looks like a blast and always a great bunch of guys to go with.

I have a '01 Frontier King Cab (2 door, 4x4). Stock as she comes. haha

I'm hoping to get out soon and meet some new people and have a great day on the trails.
Thanks.

Hey guys,
I am new to this site as well.
I have an 88 4Runner that I specifically got to be a trail rig. It is pretty much stock right now but I will be slowly modding it.

I would be interested in joining you guys for an easy stocker run; Preferably Waiparous

I hope to meet some cool people along the way and learn a few things.

^ There should be two flat pieces of steel with slotted holes just in in front of the engine on the frame rails.

They are welded on the side of the rails.

I picked up some 5/8 shackles from PA and attached them there.

I don't believe 3/4 will fit but worth a try.

As for the rear I'm using my hitch with the hitch pin.

Do you have a hitch or anything? The Xterra has a frame so adding recovery points should be cheap and easy.

Awsome thanks guys how much did the shackles at pa cost?

BerserkerCatSplat

PA shackles range from $2 to $20 depending on size. The bigger the stronger, obviously. I need to grab one for myself, come to think of it.

They have recovery hooks as well.

This is what I mean by shackle placement on the Frontier/Xterra:

Mine:

http://i625.photobucket.com/albums/tt339/Blue_S13/P5110016.jpg

I have just BFG Long Trail stock size. Not the greatest but they do fairly well.

I'm getting some 31x10.5 BFG All Terrains soon as I'm hoping to go a lot this year and the current ones just wont do for when I wanna get really dirty.

I could do Saturday if anyone else is up for that day?

CA18-S13

"Ercchry", I did that little stretch on Range Road 273 for the hell of it.

It was better than expected and got a little dirty. ;)

There was a decent "puddle" that was a little deeper than I expected and had to giver a little to get through. haha

Indeed I didn't even need to go near 4 low.

...........................................................................................

Back on topic. Where do people want to go? Waiporous?

Never been out so it would be great to go with more experienced members who know their way around.

I'm good for saturday.

May I offer some advice? You're on the right track for starting off with wheeling. You have mediocre tow points in front which is better than no tow points at all. Now, you were looking at using a hitch pin with your hitch? It would work, but if you're going to be using it the way I think you are which is the hooped or eye end of the strap through the pin correct? If so, be prepared to buy a new one or look to be replacing someones strap because that's not the way to do it. Get a hitch receiver shackle, that's the best one to get. National 4WD has them!

CA18-S13
05-11-2010, 11:06 PM
Thanks for the advice!

I was thinking of adding 2 recovery hooks on the front tomorrow and I have been doing some reading tonight and I was already going to get a hitch shackle as well. haha

One question....I was wondering why you say the fronts are mediocre?

Not trying to be a dick, just curious is all...

BerserkerCatSplat
05-11-2010, 11:09 PM
The metal you would be putting the shackle through is quite thin and not that well supported. Any pulls that weren't dead-straight-on would likely bend the flange rather badly. Not terrible (at least you're not pulling on a control arm or something) but not ideal.

Looking at the pics again, I'm not sure those holes were meant for recovery at all, they may just be the tie-down holes for shipping the vehicle from the factory.

CA18-S13
05-11-2010, 11:21 PM
Hmm...according to the FSM those are the recovery brackets. They are 5/16" thick and fully welded to the frame.

I have been pulled out of some stuff before with them and never had a problem yet. :dunno:

IDK, Those are the only thing Nissan gave me to work with. haha

I'm adding some recovery hooks beside them bolted through the rails. There are holes already in the rail perfect for such a thing.

I would like to see this Waiperous since I've never been there and others here seem to know the area fairly well.

It looks like there are spots that are tough, but ways around if the vehicle/you are not up to it. :)

Edit: I thinking this is a little better than just a hitch pin. ;)

Berserker CatSplat nailed it, they are only meant for tie down for shipping. Again, not trying to sound like a douche, but hooks are not recommend because they can slip out and cause injury. Reciever hitch shackles are the only way to go. Get yourself one soon, because you will eventually...haha.

Its honestly alot easier than most people think (Not the extreme rock crawling etc, that shits hard) but doing trails etc, best Advice is to just take it slow, especially if your unsure.

Well that makes sense, I've never been out to waiparous so I can't be any help with that.

I actually have alot more respect for Jeep's after going offroading with a couple, I used to think they were cute little girl vehicles, but damn those things can make it through the tough shit.

So I get outed because I have no experience?

This is the whole reason I want to try.

I understand that you don't want to be responsible for getting people lost. haha

I'm really only looking to get off pavement and onto easier stuff and maybe get a little muddy. Nothing crazy by any means since I know my tires aren't up to crazy stuff.

ercchry's sentence was a bit awkward; he was saying that he, too had little or no experience, and thus having only two inexperienced guys on the trail wouldn't exactly be prudent. He certainly wasn't trying to discourage you, it's just that having an experienced leader is a very good idea for first-timers. Heck, I'm certainly not experienced either.

I have to help a friend move on Saturday so I'm out as well, but Sundays are generally good for me.

I found a fairly nice map that could be very helpful.

If something looks to hard I'll just find a way around it or in the worst case just turn around.

I don't feel like causing issues for others if it's not necessary.

Waiperours is definitely easier than Mclean but as somone else wrote when trails are wet it is a whole different deal. I might be able to go out on Sunday but will have to check a few things first. I think Waiperous is best for a BSR but I am familar with both areas (Mclean reports show it to be very slick and muddy). Time to put the muds on and fix my winch wheeling season is here!

Alak
05-13-2010, 09:44 PM
Mclean is usually pretty busy on the weekend, with weekend warriors and such. Its pretty common to bump into people on the trail all the time, so theres no shortage of help if trouble is afoot. And its May, so everyone is going for shakedowns.

Wiaprous is pretty easy most of the time, and its got some good scenery and a few challenging obsticles for the beginner crowd.

I'll probably run a top of the world run for the newbies at the end of the month (depending on when I get my parts & install them).

I could ride along as a guide, but Im not sure about this weekend.

As great as convertables are the draw backs are huge. If its dry you end up caked in dust and if wet that dust is mud. A 4Runner is ok for the driver but the rear folks get showered. Heck I have had mud all over my dash and inside window just due to my side windows being open so go topless at you own peril. I wish I had video of a friends Jeep when he got stuck and the rooster tail of wet slop went up over and into the open cab it was priceless.
